Michael Che Replaces Cecily Strong on SNL's Weekend Update

Cecily Strong is being replaced as an anchor on Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update segment by comedian Michael Che.
The show’s creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels confirmed the news to The New York Times, saying the switch came after trying “a number of different combinations” over the last few weeks.
Michael worked on SNL as a writer last season and he is best known for his work as a correspondent on The Daily Show. Cecily will still remain on the series as a featured player.
“Michael is a strong writer and he’s really funny,” Lorne said. “It’s always difficult to make changes and make ‘Update’ different from what’s gone before.”
“It struggled to find an identity last season… because what had come before had been pretty brilliant,” Lorne added. “This is about a new era, what feels appropriate for now. That’s why we did a lot of combinations and tests, and this is kind of where we came out.”
This will be the first time in SNL history that two men sit at the anchor desk.
