Why Are Fairy Tales Universally Appealing?
    ==========================
    .
Posted: 09/15/2014 9:05 am EDT Updated: 23 minutes ago
    .
“Let us tell an old story anew and see how well you know it…”
With these words, Maleficent — Disney’s recent remake of Sleeping Beauty — begins. And as we watch Angelina Jolie soar on her magnificent black wings above that fairy tale world, we come to realize that old stories made new can utterly change what we knew and understood about that story… and perhaps about ourselves as well. ‘Sleeping Beauty’ is an old story. Much older than people realize.
    .

Maleficent, written by Linda Woolverton and directed by Robert Stromberg, drew upon Walt Disney’s well-known 1959 animated musical fantasy Sleeping Beauty.
Disney had been inspired by the Grimm Brothers’ famous fairy tale “Dornröschen” (“Little Briar-Rose”), published in their first collection of fairy tales in 1812. This tale had been told to the brothers in 1811 by a pretty young woman named Marie Hassenpflug, who had most probably heard the tale from her French Protestant grandmother who had fled to Hessen-Cassel in the 1700s.
    .
Marie’s grandmother had either read or been told Charles Perrault’s 1697 story, “La Belle au Bois Dormant” (“The Beauty Sleeping in the Wood”), though she had forgotten the ending where the prince’s ogre mother plotted to kill and eat the prince and princess’ two little children.
    .
Charles Perrault, meanwhile, had read an older story called “Sun, Moon and Talia”, written by a Neapolitan courtier named Giambattista Basile and published in 1634. In that tale, the princess is impregnated by the prince and gives birth to their two children while still asleep.
    .
Basile may well have heard an old Occitan story called Perceforest (1330s) about a young man who penetrates a dark wood and finds — and makes love to — a young woman deep in a coma. And that old Occitan story may well have its roots in oral tales of earth goddesses who must die in winter and be reborn in spring.
    .
Stories are like that. Like cities, they are built on the stones and bones of the past.
Take “Romeo and Juliet”. Most people think Shakespeare invented this tragic tale of two young star-crossed lovers kept apart by their feuding families. But his plot is based on a much older Italian story, and Shakespeare reworked it for his own contemporaries and so saved it from being forgotten. Perhaps Baz Luhrmann’s revisioning of the story has done so for a whole new generation.
    .
My own novel Bitter Greens is a retelling of the “Rapunzel” fairy tale. I wrote it as the creative component of my doctorate on fairy tale retellings, during which I constructed a “mythic biography” of the Maiden in the Tower which traced her ancestry all the way back to before written language. One of the things I was examining in my doctorate is why fairy tales such as “Sleeping Beauty” and “Rapunzel” continue to be told and retold, sometimes enduring for over a thousand years. Basically, what I discovered is a story only survives if it articulates some kind of desire or dilemma, some kind of predicament, which is of importance to both the reteller of the tale, and to his or her audience.
    .

Storytelling is as old as speech. It existed before humans first began to carve shapes in stones and press their hands upon the rocky walls of caves. When our ancestors crouched about the camp fire at night, they told each other tales of gods and heroes, monsters and marvels, to hold back the terrors of the night. Such tales comforted and entertained, diverted and educated those who listened, and helped shape their sense of the world and their place in it.
Stories are the common ground that allow people to connect, despite all our defences and all our differences.
    .
And old tales such as “Rapunzel” always operate on two levels. On the one hand, it is a story of two lovers who must struggle towards each other against seemingly impossible obstacles — a jealous older woman, a tower with no door and no stair, thorns that can put out your eyes. It’s a story of longing and desire, obsession and madness, rescue and redemption, and as such it is utterly compelling.
    .
However, all these striking motifs — the girl with the impossibly long golden hair, the prince who must climb it to seduce her, the witch who severs it from her head — these are all laden with meaning. Ursula le Guin once said that fantasy speaks to the unconscious in the language of the unconscious — symbol, metaphor, and archetype. This is true too of fairy tales. The motifs act as a kind of secret code, carrying messages of life and love and death and rebirth.
    .
“Rapunzel” therefore speaks to anyone — man or woman, young or old — who has found themselves trapped against their will in some kind of prison, whether it be a poisonous job environment or a relationship that has turned sour, or a parent that wants to keep you as a child forever. The symbolic meaning of the tower can be different for every person that hears the tale. Rapunzel’s escape from the tower holds out hope that others too can escape and make a new life for themselves.
    .
The influential folklorist Alan Dundes once wrote: “folklore means something — to the tale teller, to the song singer, to the riddler, and to the audiences… Folktales… have passed the test of time, and are transmitted again and again. Unlike individual dreams, folktales must appeal to the psyches of many, many individuals if they are to survive.”
    .
By drawing on these old tales — stories which have been told and retold for thousands of years by hundreds of thousands of tellers — we can tap into that shadowy archetypal world of story while still telling stories that illuminate our own lives.
    .
By retelling “Sleeping Beauty” from the point of view of Maleficent, the villainess, we see the story in a new way and understand new truths about what forces can shape and misshape a human psyche. I hope to do the same with my retelling of “Rapunzel”; to tell an old story anew and, in doing so, allow it to enchant and enlighten a whole new audience.

OSCARS 2014 NOMINATIONS : Best Adapted Screenplay
    ============================================
    .
Films adapted from books tend to have the advantage in the Adapted Screenplay category. Five of the last 10 winners have come from novels: “The Descendants,” “No Country for Old Men,” “Precious,” “Sideways,” and “Slumdog Millionaire.” Another three were adapted from nonfiction books: “The Social Network,” “12 Years a Slave,” and “Argo,” which was based partly on the memoir by CIA agent Tony Mendez.
    .
Movies based on novels in this year’s race include “Gone Girl,” adapted by Gillian Flynn from her own best-selling mystery; “Inherent Vice,” Paul Thomas Anderson’s take on Thomas Pynchon’s book; and “A Most Wanted Man,” based on a novel by John le Carre, who also wrote the source material for Oscar-nominated screenplays “The Constant Gardener” and “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.”
    .
“The Two Faces of January,” “The Homesman,” “Still Alice,” and “Men, Women & Children” are also based on novels.
    .
But nonfiction books are also a force to be reckoned with this year. “Unbroken” is based on Laura Hillenbrand’s book about World War II hero Louis Zamperini and was adapted by Oscar-winners Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, as well as Oscar-nominees Richard LaGravenese and William Nicholson.
    .
“The Imitation Game” is based on a biography of another World War II hero, Alan Turning, who helped crack the Enigma Code before being prosecuted for his homosexuality. Another true story of war, “American Sniper,” is based on the autobiography of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle.
    .
“The Theory of Everything” is adapted from a memoir by physicist Steven Hawking’s wife Jane. And “Rosewater” is based on Maziar Bahari’s memoir of imprisonment in Iran.
    .
“Miss Julie” is based on an August Strindberg play, while “Annie” and “Into the Woods” are new adaptations of famous musicals.

Stylist Brad Goreski On His Bow Tie Collection, Meeting Brad Pitt And Why He And Rashida Jones ‘Do Whatever We Want’
    =======================================================================

    .
Celebrity interviews are rarely a one-on-one type of deal. In person, there’s often an entourage hovering nearby to intercept any invasive questions, holding fingers up to let you know how many minutes are left on the clock; over the phone, there’s someone listening in on the whole affair, connecting you to the famous person and chiming in with instructions. You never see this when you read a profile, but that’s how it works.
    .
You can imagine my immense surprise, then, that when my phone rang at the appointed time of a scheduled chat with reality star and stylist—and now spokesperson for Dr. Scholl’s—Brad Goreski, he was the only other one on the line. “Hi, it’s Brad,” he said, like we’d been buds for years. “How are you?”
    .
At the tail end of NYFW I was tired, frazzled and ready for a nap, but also intrigued by the chance to speak to Goreski all by his lonesome. I took the rare opportunity to get the scoop on his famous clientele, his personal style and just how many of those signature bow ties he owns. Read on!
    .
Wow, that’s lot! Let’s talk about your work as a stylist. You’ve met so many famous people through your job. Who left you the most starstruck?
I’d say it was Brad Pitt. It was my first day on the job as an assistant. He was super nice, but I couldn’t look at him…I was focused on the job, we’ll say.
    .
Talk about a memorable first day! Did you talk to him at all?
Not so much since it was really my first day on the job. I was trying to be seen, not heard!

Re-ranking the contenders in Best Picture
    ================================
    .
By: Joey Magidson Mon, Sep 15 2014
    .
With the festival season well underway and a good portion of the contenders for Best Picture having screened or about to screen, now seems like as good a time as any to take a look at the category and see what’s what in an expanded fashion. I did this with the major categories a few months back, but that was when almost everything was still speculation. We have some facts to go on now, so while much of this is still just an educated guess, I’m not completely relying on hunches this time around. It’s more of an even mix, depending on the film in question, of course.
    .
Here now are ten movies that are sitting the prettiest in my mind right now for Best Picture:
    1. Gone Girl – The highest profile unseen player gets my number one spot at this point and time. If it hits during its upcoming Opening Night spot at the New York Film Festival, then we could have a real frontrunner on our hands. David Fincher is overdue to have an Oscar winner in my book, so with the right reception, this could go where The Social Network came so close to going. Until proven otherwise, I’m going to stick with this one as potentially the one to beat.
    .
    2. Birdman (or the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) – Even though the love fest for this one died down a bit between the start of the Venice Film Festival and the end of the Toronto Film Festival, it’s still sitting pretty. A Closing Night spot at New York will keep it in the conversation too. Especially with Michael Keaton potentially being the top dog in Best Actor, you really can’t bet against this one being a huge player all across the board.
    .
    3. Foxcatcher – The buzz has quieted down a bit, but slow and steady could still ultimately win the race. Bennett Miller’s tale was initially a frontrunner, but now has faded a bit due to newer players, but something tells me that this will move up again before all is said and done. Watch out for Steve Carell especially, regardless of whether he ends up in the Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor race.
    .
    4. The Imitation Game – The past week or two has seen this biopic/period piece become not just a major player, but also likely Harvey Weinstein’s horse to back. Benedict Cumberbatch appears likely to receive a Best Actor nomination, which will only help the cause. A British biopic can often be catnip to the Academy, so when you factor in that this takes place during World War II, you really have to have this in your top five right now.
    .
    5. Boyhood – Not quite the long shot it was initially thought to be but also not quite the potential frontrunner, Richard Linklater’s achievement is hoping to remain the critical darling when the precursors begin. Having Patricia Arquette as the probably frontrunner in Best Supporting Actress will help, so as long as the critics continue to support this one, I think you have to keep it locked in high up on your Best Picture list.
    .
    6. Unbroken – The other main unseen player, Angelina Jolie’s war epic seems like the most traditional Oscar bait of the lot, which could put it in line as a safe nominee but perhaps not necessarily as a winner. If it winds up being more than just a “safe” player, then watch out for Jack O’Connell, who could sweep in and upend the absolutely stacked Best Actor lineup.
    .
    7. The Theory of Everything – Speaking of awards bait, it seems likely that the Academy will go for this Stephan Hawking biopic in some way. Those who have seen it have pegged both Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones as potentially the ones to beat. Redmayne is clearly in Best Actor, but Jones could wind up in the top slot in either Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress. Stay tuned on that front…
    .
    8. Whiplash – A smaller contender, but one that’s growing in stature with each passing film festival. J.K. Simmons is seeming to be the fella to beat in Best Supporting Actor, so having it possibly a winner is going to only help with Best Picture votes. I know a lot of people think I’m out on a limb with this one, and maybe I am, but I also have a hunch that I’m on to something.
    .
    9. Men, Women & Children – A bunch of folks are backing off of Jason Reitman’s latest, but I’m still keeping it around for now. It seems like it could really only be Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and maybe one performer from the ensemble that could be in play, but I don’t think you can count it out just yet. I see it tomorrow, so I’ll know more about its chances then.
    .
    10. Rosewater – The same could be said for Jon Stewart’s directorial debut as for the new Reitman work, but I think this likely will still appeal to plenty of voters. With Best Actor jam packed, Gael Garcia Bernal might be on the outside looking in, but Best Picture is still a real possibility. Best Adapted Screenplay could happen too, so stay tuned on this one.
    .
Next in line would be these flicks…
    11. Interstellar
    12. Selma
    13. A Most Violent Year
    14. Nightcrawler
    15. Fury
    16. Into the Woods
    17. Wild
    18. Inherent Vice
    19. Mr. Turner
    20. Big Eyes
    .
Finally, we’ll wrap up with another ten to give us 30 contenders in total…
    21. The Fault in Our Stars
    22. American Sniper
    23. Trash
    24. St. Vincent
    25. Kill the Messenger
    26. True Story
    27. Life Itself
    28. The Gambler
    29. Pride
    30. The Lego Movie

Photos: Angelina Jolie Meets Three Migrants Who Survived Sinking Boat Off Malta
    ==================================================================
    .
    About 2 hours ago – Monday, 15 September 2014, 11:19
    .
UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres and Special Envoy Angelina Jolie visited the naval rescue headquarters in Malta yesterday, on a weekend in which new boat sinkings were being reported off Egypt and Libya claiming more innocent lives.
    .
Ms Jolie and M. Guterres met three survivors of one of the tragedies, who had been rescued by a commercial vessel and brought to Malta by the Maltese authorities, a statement by the UNHCR said.
    .
In the Maltese capital Valletta, Ms Jolie also visited Syrian refugee families who survived a similar devastating boat tragedy last October. They included a couple from Damascus whose three small children perished during the crossing, and a doctor from Aleppo whose wife and three year-old daughter drowned. Half of those arriving in Europe by boat are refugees from Syria and Eritrea.
    .
Mr Guterres and Ms Jolie thanked the naval authorities for their part in successful rescue operations that have saved many lives. Amidst concerns about the sustainability of the Italian Mare Nostrum operation, they also called for increased efforts by European nations to contribute to rescue efforts and reduce deaths at sea.
    .
Over 2,500 people have drowned or gone missing attempting the crossing this year alone, including over 2,200 since the start of June.
    .
Ms Jolie said: “We all need to wake up to the scale of this crisis. There is a direct link between the conflicts in Syria and elsewhere and the rise in deaths at sea in the Mediterranean. We have to understand what drives people to take the fearful step of risking their children’s lives on crowded, unsafe vessels; it is the overwhelming desire to find refuge. It is also part of a bigger problem – the soaring numbers of people displaced by conflicts around the world today, which now stands at over 51 million. Unless we address the root causes of these conflicts the numbers of refugees dying or unable to find protection will continue to rise.”
    .
130,000 people have arrived in Europe by sea so far this year, more than double the 60,000 recorded in 2013. Italy has received over 118,000 arrivals, most of them rescued at sea by Italy under its Navy operation Mare Nostrum.
    .
As the EU and member states search for a better framework for responding to the worsening situation in the Mediterranean, UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres said: “We don’t have many chances to get this right. Europe’s response needs to be a truly collective effort, one that offers safer ways to find protection while maintaining a strong capacity to rescue people at sea. If it fails, many more lives will be lost at Europe’s doorstep.”
    .
As part of a package based on solidarity and responsibility-sharing amongst states, UNHCR is calling for legal, safe alternatives for those fleeing conflict and persecution, so that they are not forced to attempt the crossing into Europe by sea, including resettlement, admission based on humanitarian needs, private sponsorship schemes, facilitated access to family reunification and the use of programmes such as student or employment visas.
    .
In a separate statement, The Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) said it had the honour of hosting the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Mr Antonio Manuel de Oliveira Guterres and Ms Angelina Jolie, Special Envoy of UN High Commissioner for Refugees late yesterday afternoon. Accompanied by the Deputy Commander of the AFM , Colonel. Mark Mallia and Colonel Spiteri in charge of Operations and officials of the Ministry for Home Affairs, the UNHCR and his envoy were shown several units of the AFM relating to search and rescue operations such as the 4 Regiment’s Rescue and Coordination Centre, the Air Wing Base and the Maritime Squadron.
    .
During the course of this event, a Search and Rescue operation was taking place where the High Commissioner and Ms Jolie had the opportunity to speak to two of the survivors of the recent tragedy which occurred at the far end of the Mediterranean.
    .
The AFM demonstrated a simulated Search and Rescue scenario off the coast of Malta using an Alouette Helicopter, a Search and Rescue Launch and the Offshore Protector Class Patrol Vessel P52. The United Nations Commissioner expressed his appreciation and had ample words of praise for the work carried out by the AFM personnel. Following the demonstration of the search and rescue capabilities of the AFM,
    .
Mr Oliveira Guterras said ‘’I can see courage, determination and generosity. All the members of the staff of the Armed Forces of Malta that have been involved in dramatical operations of rescue at sea, rescued thousands and thousands of people drowning in the Mediterranean or risking to drown in the Mediterranean, and bringing protection to those who are fleeing situations that are absolutely tremendous.
    .
To see a family coming from Syria, that was born with members of the family and were killed with neighbours that have disappeared, to see these families again risking their lives on the sea makes us really feel how important it is the work that the armed forces of Malta are doing.
    .
It’s a work that should be recognized by the international community and I appeal for strong solidarity with Malta. Malta is a small country, of course with a limited social capacity. Malta has been always very cooperative to rescue people and Malta deserves solidarity of the European Union and international community. Armed Forces of Malta deserves the recognition of all those that feel that it is extremely important to go on with this very generous but also very courageous work‘’

Trailer Roundup: Brad Pitt in a Tank and the Return of The Walking Dead
    ==========================================================
    .
    BY JORDAN CRUCCHIOLA 09.15.14 | 6:30 AM |
    .
The One Everyone Is Talking About: Fury
    —————————————————————————————–
The third act of Brad Pitt’s career is aggressive one. He’s been a United Nations investigator saving the world from zombie hoards, a Nazi-scalping black-ops unit commander, a hit man and a drug dealer’s “associate”—and that’s just since 2009.
    .
With his boyish good looks behind him, Pitt has embraced his roguish alter ego in the post-50 years. It looks good on him, and so does this return to the WWII landscape as Wardaddy, a Sherman tank commander in the United States Army leading his five-man crew on a death march into the dark heart of Hitler’s Germany.
    .
Obviously, Wardaddy’s squad is outnumbered, outclassed, and breaking in a rookie gunner as they single-handedly look to be taking on an entire Nazi battalion. And considering Fury comes by way of David Ayer, writer of Sabotage, End of Watch, and Training Day, this one is probably going to end very badly.
    .
Pause at: 0:09 to behold the Fury. Catch—and get excited about—Jon Bernthal at 0:28. Stop at 0:41 to see a pretty magnificent air raid and 1:35 to see the tanks in action.
    .
Essential Quote: “Don’t get too close to anyone.”—Sergeant Wardaddy.

Updated – Jolie pleads for European nations to contribute to rescue efforts in the Mediterranean
    =============================================================================
    .
    Monday, September 15, 2014, 10:40
    .
Film star Angelina Jolie and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres have called for increased efforts by European nations to contribute to rescue efforts and reduce migrants’ deaths at sea.
The two were yesterday taken on a tour of AFM facilities, during which officials explained the AFM’s work in rescuing boat people.
    .
Jolie and Mr Guterres met three survivors of last Friday’s migrants tragedy, who were rescued by a commercial vessel and brought to Malta.
    .
Jolie also visited Syrian refugee families who survived a similar boat tragedy last October. They included a couple from Damascus whose three small children perished during the crossing, and a doctor from Aleppo whose wife and three year-old daughter drowned.
    .
The UNHCR said Mr. Guterres and Angelina Jolie thanked the AFM for their part in successful rescue operations that have saved many lives. Amidst concerns about the sustainability of the Italian Mare Nostrum operation, they also called for increased efforts by European nations to contribute to rescue efforts and reduce deaths at sea.
    .
Mr Guterres this morning also had a meeting with Prime Minister Joseph Muscat at the Auberge de Castille. He said that Malta was “a special case” because of its small size, and required enhanced solidarity from the EU on migration.
    .
Mr Guterres said the Mediterranean was facing a dramatic situation, and called on the EU to enhance mechanisms of solidarity.
    .
He acknowledged that Malta’s capacity to integrate irregular migrants was limited and offered to work more closely with the government.
    .
“We are interested in enhancing solidarity with your country and discuss with you ways to improve detention conditions,” Mr Guterres said, adding Malta could not be seen as any other country.
    .
He also praised the work done by the Armed Forces of Malta to save lives at sea. Dr Muscat welcomed the comments, saying the UNHCR’s position was “in synch” with the government’s.
    .
Focussing on the crisis in Libya, Dr Muscat said the situation there had to be tackled with the greatest urgency. “The situation in Libya cannot be seen as totally unrelated to what is happening in Syria and Iraq even if on a completely different scale.”
    .
He called for UN intervention in Libya but insisted that the type of intervention had to be determined with the Libyan people.
    .
“We believe in an inclusive solution to the anarchy in Libya that takes into account the will of the Libyan people as expressed in elections but also recognises the realities on the ground,” Dr Muscat said.
    .
He added that the security situation in Libya and illegal migration were not unrelated because the lack of rule of law allowed criminal gangs to do as they pleased.

@Phool.: Morning Sis. How are you my friend. I see JJ heard you calling them cheap for not getting the photos of B and A in the boat. He showed you, he’s not cheap, LOL. angle looks so happy with her family and friends. Phool, I don’t know if you remember this, but when Brad was thinking bout starting the MAKE IT RIGHT project and he was talking to people about it. There was a photo of Angie in a white shorts getting on a helicopter, that was the last time I saw her in shorts. See I can do shade and praise at the same time.

Buddy, take a chill pill. I didn’t say that quote yesterday was fake. I said it reminded me to mention notOK creating a fake “interview” in this week’s issue using old REAL quotes. I realize that English is not everyone’s first language – but the next time you could try asking for clarification BEFORE wasting time on a LAP just because you didn’t understand what I said.

As far as me talking about Ticky and you not liking it? Tough nuggies. Life’s full of crap people don’t like. That’s the way the ball bounces, G!

@Phool.: I hate people that just bemoan about things, like you know who. If you do not like how things are, do something about it and stop complaining! Angie never complains, she never blames other people for the shortcomings of her life. She is very passionate about everything in her life: love, family, humanitarian work, acting, writing, directing. Passionate people are endearing to me. Nice talking to you, but unfortunately I have to go now.

Yes I remember the photo you are talking about “white shorts” to be honest nothing much has changed Angie still has those beautiful long slender legs , I must say looking mighty fine in her black shorts , ahh so jealous of Dame Mrs Pitt.

I love how the kids are so affectionate and expressive with their parents, I want to get my hands on that video camera, how many beautiful memories have they captured on it, ok time to get down and make a plan to get that camera.

@Susan, I still believe the X and her serial killer look alike is not in a real relationship. I believe this “relationship” is for convenience., eg take to awards Ect and tap down on the chatter that she cannot keep a man and is unlucky in love. Susan, I cannot understand why is he living in NYC most of the time while she’s in LA almost all the time. I cannot see this as a real couple. Too much time apart especially when their is no reason to keep them part, eg work and children. Susan, you know if this was Brad and Angie their would be all kind if article saying they are living a lie.

Genetic Screening and Breast Cancer Risk
    ===============================

    .
    Q. In 2013, Angelina Jolie revealed that she had a risk-reducing double mastectomy following genetic testing that showed she was positive for a mutation in one of the cancer predisposition genes. Her story sparked a national discussion about genetic testing. Have you seen an increase in women requesting genetic testing to learn their BRCA status at UConn Health since then – the so-called Angelina Jolie effect?
    .
    A. We’ve seen an approximate 20 percent increase in referrals to the UConn Hereditary Cancer Program following Angelina Jolie’s revelation.

10 Of my Favourite Moody Changey Movie Monologues
    ================================================
    .
    15 September 2014
    .
You know those days at work that just really send you into yourself and the thought of killing an actual human being seems acceptable to you. You know the ones, those days that make you listen to angry as all hell music in the car on the way home and although you don’t even know the words you find yourself shouting some hateful lyrics out the car window at some random passers-by, who lets be honest don’t know you and are now pretty sure they don’t wanna know you… Yup that day, the one you just got a clear picture of in your head.
    .
Well… I’m not huge into my music unless its Eminem or a song used in a movie soundtrack. So when I have those days which if I’m honest, recently is happening more often than not, I love nothing more than going home and popping in one of my favourite movies that I know there is a bloody good ranty or motivational emotionally driven scene that will change my entire mind set for the next few hours.
    .
Yes people its true, very true in fact that a series of well thought out brilliantly delivered lines of dialogue in a movie can often hit us in our ear G-spot and send us into a frenzy. They make us Angry or Sad, Happy or You know that state of “**** yeah I’m gonna go start a fight, Why?? I dunno, I just am”.
    .
So I came home after work the other day and poured myself some Russian Standard Vodka and got to work on my 10 Moody Changey Monologues, these are the ones that hit me Straight away and every time I watch the movies I think to myself “Damn Al Pacino is the greatest actor to ever live” lets be honest as Ranty Shouty Monologues go nobody does it half as good as him…
    Right let’s do this…
    .
Al Pacino… Scent Of A Woman
    ————————————–
It’s impossible to deny that when it comes to handing out the verbal righteousness, Pacino hits you in the face like a ton of bricks. 1992′s Scent of a Woman is probably one of his lesser liked movies but this scene in which he defends the young university drop out Charlie is just one those “I’m gonna tell you who YOU are moments”. I actually remember the first time I watched this movie loving Al’s performance and as most people probably thought when he said “I’m just getting started” I knew what was coming would be an actors masterpiece…
Highlight: “If I were the man I was five years ago, I’d take a FLAME-THROWER to this place”
    .
Christopher Walken/ Dennis Hopper… True Romance
    —————————————————-
This is one of those rare scenes where not one but two outstanding actors come to the fore and give two unbelievable performances. Walken starts off with his eerie chilling extremely foreboding attitude. Hoppers performance for me steals this scene realising there is only one way this is gonna end so he delivers some bloody excellent history lessons. What do you expect from some Tarantino gold class screen writing.
Highlight: “Cause you… Your part egg-plant”
    .
Jack Nicholson… A Few Good Men
    ———————————–
Everyone knew this one was coming, Jack Nick delivers a stirring speech on the harsh realities of war and the protection the U.S Army provides for its nation. not only that but he takes a fresh young faced Tom Cruise and wipes his **** with him. This scene speaks for itself so I will say no more apart from this… Jack at his best I would say.
Highlight: “You WANT me on that wall, You NEED me on that wall”
    .
    Edward Norton… The 25th Hour
    ——————————-
Okay full disclaimer before you click play on this video, There is a lot and I mean a lot of swearing within this monologue. Edward Norton is one of those actors you
just always want to see on the screen and in this scene he goes from showing us this angry as hell man at the start and through his own realisation through the dialogue reveals himself to a scared little boy inside. I find this a powerful social comment as well as a cool speech.
Highlight: “You think Bush and Cheney didnt know about that ****, Give me a F***in break”
    .
    Brad Pitt… Fight Club
    —————————-
Much like the man above who incidentally is also in fight club. This short but fairly powerful speech is again a social comment on how we were living at the time. Brad Pitt very much came into his own skin in this movie stepping up and letting us know this guy could act his balls off. Tyler Durden is the role of a lifetime and Pitt put in the performance of a lifetime.
Highlight: “working jobs that we hate so we can buy **** that we dont need”
    .
    Al Pacino (again)… Devils Advocate
    ———————————
Yeah probably not the last time he will enter this list the man is an absolute power house. His portrayl as John Milton aka Satan was just so damn effortlessly
delicious and this scene in which he tells the truth about God is my favourite of this movie.
    Highlight: “He’s an absentee landlord”
    .
Leonardo Di Caprio… The Wolf Of Wall Street
    —————————————————
The newest film to enter my list and rightly so because it has to be said that when Leo and Marty get together they create nothing more than cinematic genius. I have no idea how Leo missed the oscar on this movie because it is full of scenes just like this one.
Highlight: “You’ll be telephone F***in terrorists”
    .
    Bill Pullman… Independence day
    —————————————
Oh shut up don’t bloody judge me on this one okay because you all know that when it comes down to it we just want someone to motivate us and lead us into the fray. Bill Pullman does this in spades in ID and although cheesy as hell and very ‘MERICA (F*** yeah) I do so love this speech.
Highlight: “We will not go quietly into the night”.
    .
    Alec Baldwin… GlenGarry Glen Ross
    —————————————–
In a movie choc full of monologues from some of the damn finest actors to have ever graced the screen, actors like Al Pacino, Ed Harris, Jack Lemon, Kevin Spacey and Alan Arkin, its a young wet behind the ears Alec Baldwin that straight up steals this flick from his peers. Im always uncertain as to what his speech is hoping to accomplish and if he actually wants them to succeed. I handed this movie to a good friend when he was about to set up his own company and he has always said this flick shaped his first day.
Highlight “F**k you, Thats my name”
    .
    Kevin Smith… Chasing Amy
    ——————————–
Okay okay this is purely because im a massive ***** for Kevin Smith movies but this little speech from the Not so talkative Silent Bob about his lost love really polishes off my favourite Smiddy flick. A great all round movie topped off by the director having belief in his ability to deliver a heartfelt speech. I have to be honest I could of chose any number of scenes from this flick. In the meantime i wait with baited breath for Tusk
Highlight: “Did you know I always wanted to be a dancer in vegas”
    .
So thats 10 of my favourite monologues but I know I will have missed some of yours so why dont you let me know what you think should have made my list or would make your list

500 migrants feared dead in ‘mass murder’ on the Mediterranean Sea
    =====================================================
    .
Posted about 57 mins ago | 0 comment
    .
VALLETTA, MALTA (BNO NEWS) — More than 720 migrants who were attempting to travel by boat from North Africa to Europe are feared to have drowned in the Mediterranean Sea in four separate boat tragedies in recent days, including one in which hundreds died when traffickers caused the boat to sink on purpose, officials said Monday.
    .
The deliberate sinking happened after around 500 migrants, including families and unaccompanied children, had left the Egyptian port city of Damietta on September 6 and were forced to change boats several times during the trip. When they were told to change to yet another smaller boat on Wednesday, the migrants became concerned and rebelled against the traffickers, survivors said.
    .
“Realizing the danger of the situation, many rebelled and a clash occurred with the traffickers who, at one point, became nervous and rammed the migrant boat from the stern, causing it to sink,” said Flavio Di Giacomo, a spokesman for the International Organization for Migration (IMO). “Most of the 500 people fell into the sea and drowned while others managed to stay afloat by clinging to objects.”
Only 11 people were rescued after they were spotted on Thursday by migrants aboard the Panamanian freighter ‘Pegasus,’ about 300 miles (482 kilometers) off Malta.
    .
Among those who survived are two Palestinian boys who had escaped from Gaza and traveled to Egypt in early September. One of them told IOM that he clung to a buoy along with seven other people, but the others all drowned one by one as the hours passed. He was rescued on Thursday when migrants on board the ‘Pegasus’ spotted him, about 1.5 day after the boat had sunk.
    .
The second Palestinian boy was rescued soon after and had managed to stay afloat because he was wearing a life jacket, the organization said. Nine other survivors were also rescued.
    .
“This is a particularly serious episode because it would not just be an accident, but a mass murder perpetrated by criminals with no scruples and no respect for human life,” Di Giacomo said. He said the International Organization for Migration was appealing to the international community to stop traffickers and to bring them to justice.
    .
“At this time, the only way to stop these organizations is to start opening legal channels for entry into Europe for all people – men, women and children – who flee their countries in search of protection,” Di Giacomo explained. He said the nationalities of the victims in Wednesday’s boat sinking are believed to be Syrians, Palestinians, Egyptians and Sudanese.
    .
Monday’s news came just hours after word of three other boat tragedies elsewhere on the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Libya.
The worst accident near Libya happened on Sunday off the coast of Qarabouli, which is to the east of the Libyan capital of Tripoli, where a boat carrying an estimated 250 people sank. At least 99 migrants had been rescued by Monday while three bodies were recovered, leaving around 148 others unaccounted-for.
    .
In a second incident off Libya, a migrant boat carrying an unknown number of people sank off Libya’s Tajoura district, about 24 kilometers (15 miles) east of Tripoli. At least 45 bodies were recovered, including six women of whom one was seven months pregnant. A total of 75 people had been rescued but it was not known whether others were still missing.
    .
In a third incident, an inflatable boat thought to be carrying 52 people ripped apart near the scene of the second sinking, killing 26 people. Another 26 people were rescued and no one else was believed to remain missing.
    .
“This looks to have been a particularly tragic weekend on the Mediterranean,” said Adrian Edwards, a spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). “As of now, and off Libya, we are hearing of three incidents, but when these occurred is still unclear.”
    .
The news came as UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres and Special Envoy Angelina Jolie visited the naval rescue headquarters in Malta on Sunday and met with survivors of recent boat tragedies. They thanked naval authorities for their part in rescue operations but called for increased efforts by European nations to contribute to rescue efforts at sea.
    .
“We all need to wake up to the scale of this crisis. There is a direct link between the conflicts in Syria and elsewhere and the rise in deaths at sea in the Mediterranean,” Jolie said. “We have to understand what drives people to take the fearful step of risking their children’s on crowded, unsafe vessels; it is the overwhelming desire to find refuse.”
    .
The United Nations believes more than 3,000 people have died so far this year while attempting to make the dangerous journey from North Africa to Europe. More than 600 people hoping to reach safety in Europe drowned or went missing in 2013, making the Mediterranean Sea the world’s deadliest stretch of water for migrants and refugees. At least 500 died in 2012 and around 1,500 in 2011.
    .
So far this year, a record 118,000 migrants have arrived to Italy by sea, most of whom are fleeing either the worsening security situation in Libya or the raging civil war in Syria. The numbers surpass the record 63,000 migrants who were rescued by Italy in 2011 at the height of the Arab Spring. Some 15,000 migrants have also arrived in Greece this year.

    Flipboard Launches Video Advertising
    ============================
    .
by Mark Walsh, 78 minutes ago
    .
Since last year, Flipboard has ramped up rich media advertising and e-commerce opportunities within the magazine-style app as it moves toward increased monetization. To that end, the company on Monday launched video advertising for the app with a group of eight brands including Gucci, Chrysler, Sony Pictures and Lufthansa.
    .
The ads, which will play full-screen with audio when tapped, will appear in popular Flipboard sections, such as news, sports, travel and entertainment. The video spots will typically run the standard 15- or 30-second length but the format will allow longer ads.
    .
Sony Pictures, for instance, is running a trailer for its upcoming release “Fury,” starring Brad Pitt that lasts just over two and a half minutes.
    .
Flipboard first said it would introduce video advertising at an industry conference in August.
    .
The ads will appear to users much like existing full-page display ads but feature a video play button in the center. Unlike other mobile-focused properties such as Facebook, which rolled out video ads earlier this year, Flipboard has eschewed ads that autoplay.
    .
“When people are reading Flipboard and see an ad, we don’t want to suddenly be playing video that feels intrusive or causes latency in the experience.
    .
We believe that this experience works best within Flipboard and gives brands a great way to expand their relationship with readers,” explained Nicole McCormack, online ad sales director, West Coast, for Flipboard.
    .
She added that the company isn’t using autoplay partly as a result of discussions with brands and agencies, which told the company they’ve seen better completion rates and more qualified views when a reader opts to play a video or not.

    .
McCormack also noted that brands won’t pay extra for including video in ads, but there is a campaign minimum, which she didn’t disclose.
    .
Following the pilot program with the initial set of brands, Flipboard will open up video advertising widely on November 1.
    .
In terms of audience, Flipboard says that it has more than 100 million “activated users,” or people that have downloaded its app and used them to read links or entire articles.
    .
And 7 million have used the app to create 10 million personalized magazines. According to comScore, Flipboard’s U.S. audience has more than doubled to almost 12 million monthly visitors, as of July, from about 5 million a year ago.
    .
The company last December raised $50 million in additional venture funding and earlier this year acquired rival newsreader app Zite from CNN.

Refugees High Commissioner, Angelina Jolie warn of escalating crisis in the Mediterranean

    ===================================================
    .
    Staff Reporter 15 September 2014, 1:42pm
    .
Angelina Jolie visits Syrian refugee families in Valletta: ‘We all need to wake up to the scale of this [Syrian] crisis”
    .
UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres and Special Envoy Angelina Jolie yesterday visited the naval rescue headquarters in Malta on a weekend in which new boat sinkings were being reported off Egypt and Libya claiming more innocent lives.
    .
Jolie and Guterres met three survivors of one of the tragedies, who had been rescued by a commercial vessel and brought to Malta by the Maltese authorities.
    .

In Valletta, Jolie also visited Syrian refugee families who survived a similar devastating boat tragedy last October. They included a couple from Damascus whose three small children perished during the crossing, and a doctor from Aleppo whose wife and three year-old daughter drowned. Half of those arriving in Europe by boat are refugees from Syria and Eritrea.
    .
Guterres and Jolie thanked the naval authorities for their part in successful rescue operations that have saved many lives. Amidst concerns about the sustainability of the Italian Mare Nostrum operation, they also called for increased efforts by European nations to contribute to rescue efforts and reduce deaths at sea.
    .
Over 2,500 people have drowned or gone missing attempting the crossing this year alone, including over 2,200 since the start of June.
    .
“We all need to wake up to the scale of this crisis. There is a direct link between the conflicts in Syria and elsewhere and the rise in deaths at sea in the Mediterranean,” Jolie said.
    .

“We have to understand what drives people to take the fearful step of risking their children’s lives on crowded, unsafe vessels; it is the overwhelming desire to find refuge. It is also part of a bigger problem – the soaring numbers of people displaced by conflicts around the world today, which now stands at over 51 million.”
    .

Jolie insisted that unless the root cause of the conflicts are addressed, the numbers of refugees dying or unable to find protection will continue to rise.
If it fails, many more lives will be lost at Europe’s doorstep.”
    .
As part of a package based on solidarity and responsibility-sharing amongst states, UNHCR is calling for legal, safe alternatives for those fleeing conflict and persecution, so that they are not forced to attempt the crossing into Europe by sea, including resettlement, admission based on humanitarian needs, private sponsorship schemes, facilitated access to family reunification and the use of programmes such as student or employment visas.
    .
AFM in simulated Search and Rescue scenario
    —————————————————————-

The AFM proudly demonstrated a simulated Search and Rescue scenario off the coast of Malta using an Alouette Helicopter, a Search and Rescue Launch and the Offshore Protector Class Patrol Vessel P52. The United Nations Commissioner expressed his appreciation and had ample words of praise for the work carried out by the AFM personnel.
    .
Following the demonstration of the search and rescue capabilities of the AFM, Guterras said, “I want to pay tribute to the courage, determination and generosity of the members and staff of the Armed Forces of Malta who have been involved in dramatic situations at sea and rescued thousands upon thousands of people from drowning or risking to drown in the Mediterranean sea.”
    .

Guterras also emphasised on the importance of the work carried out by the AFM in light of people fleeing their country after surviving personal tragedies and risking their lives for a better life.
    .
The UNHCR also mentioned that the work carried out by the AFM should be recognised by the international community and appealed for strong solidarity with Malta.

LOL, I just hate moaners full stop, moan moan moan, there never is an end to their moan is there. True Angie never once complains, no matter what she’s going through, remember even through her operations she still travelled to god forsaken places, still carried on as normal with her work and family, but others who are living the life of luxury just want everything to fall into their laps without them lifting a finger, yet feel the urge to blame others. You have a nice day BH, nice talking to you too.

I just loved that private video capturing the family in the midst of showing Miss Vivian the ropes, but I don’t think they needn’t to worry the girl is a pro just like her parents. I loved seeing that cheeky dimpled smile she is giving Angie when she is telling her where to stand and her running into Brads arms, can someone so cute get any more cute’er LOL Zee hugging Angie, I just love both Brad and Angie give so much love to the kids individually and collectively and it shows the bond they all have amongst them.

Yes the same fans that have more time jumping from site spouting vulgarity against innocent children and their parents but have no time to support their idol Aniston’s Flop movies, yes that’s JENHENS for you, loyal as a Runt on its way to hog roast.
    .
I think professionally she (Angie) will leave her name as it is, I love her name, but other than that Jolie-Pitt will be used.
    .
PS did you see Kanye made a fool out of himself asking two disabled people to get up and dance, one in a wheel chair other with a prosthetic limb.

  • Free Shiloh!

While it’s great news to finally see Brad and Angie together on the yacht, appearing to be really enjoying themselves with there family,,
they continue to push beautiful Shiloh into being a boy,,,she it shown in other photos to be in boy trunks with no shirt on! She is getting too old for this look now ,,she is not 3 anymore! And I put the blame directly on the parents and maybe even more Angelina cause maybe they think this a way of showing that they are ok that one of their children is different and it’s ok wants to be a boy! But this is not the case, someone is making Shiloh dress like this. She may have worn her brothers clothes cause she like them when she was a baby,,but now it seems to be more
forced on her like a uniform black and dark colors and shorts she is now wearing all the time. Someone is placing these things ouot for her to put on since she was able to walk. The boys dress better than her,,,,they wear much more variety of colors than her. If Shiloh becomes gay or confused with her sexualuality her parents were 100% guiding her towards this! Why are they doing this to her,,their child?? She deserves a chance to be a beautiful girl ,,that she is,,,stop the madness,,,stop chopping on her hair and laying out these boy uniform shorts for her,,she is a girl first,, let her be one! Dress her better,,,I know you can. They are alot of nice clothes out there for her to wear. And fire the hairstylist,,who’s chopping her hair!!! Free Shiloh,, stop it!

Hey don’t say unfortunalty say fortunately the Trolls are in meltdown, we like seeing a good old meltdown , especially when seeing their Idol Aniston go all the way to TIFF show her naked breast to all the sundry and still couldn’t lure a single distributor for her latest FLOP CAKE* waiving at PeteGiveMeAChequeHammond*. If that wasn’t embarrassing enough, then her boyfriend/fiancée runs off back to NYC right in the arms of Liv and doing photo Ops having private dinners with her, instead of staying and helping his old fiancée. Where’s the loyalty these days! I ask you?

Keep your windows bolted screaming in the ocean is still to come again, you know a day can’t pass when a troll doesn’t scream in the ocean and make a fool of itself, I say more the merrier LOL.

We have 2 weeks to Brads Fury promotion starting premiere in Washington to look forward to happy days.

Still no one bought the Hostess movie?

Damn, Ticky’s Cake has been sitting out so long it’s as dried up as her womb and her ovaries.

They’re playing tonite against the Colts…Since it’s a nite game to the wee hours and work is tomorrow so I’m behaving myself….well maybe one beer…lol.
    .
I guess JJ is a step behind the news…oh well better late than never…and where’s the pic that Angie caresses Brad’s hair…Of course JJ doesn’t want to upset the hens seeing the newlywed couple express affection would drive them to the edge further…there’s too much bad news the trolls can take…..may be a serving of cake would heal the pain don’t ya think….

  • troll meltdown

FAT tick old manny humilIates herself AGAIN and troll is in agony. Best part, more pain to come.

  • Dawne

Nothing as alluring as week old cake.

  • Fury = no oscar

@RE loons: I think the fans are going to be disappointed when fury isn’t the oscar contender they are hoping for. Scott Feinberg doesn’t mention it once, He might’ve watched a screening. The best actor race is stacked and Brad is considered lead in Fury, I can’t imagine him giving a performance better than the front runners this year. He still has time to win the best actor award. It would be pretty amazing if Angelina directs him to an Oscar win.
