Ariana Grande Wrote Songs That Were Too Sexual & Mature

Ariana Grande makes a statement as the October 2014 cover girl for Marie Claire magazine, on newsstands September 23.

Here’s what the 21-year-old actress/singer had to share with the mag:

On early ambitions: “I was 14 years old and ready to make an R&B album. I was like, ‘Where is that Mary J. Blige collab? Where is that Natasha Bedingfield writing session? Where is my session with India.Arie? I’m ready. Let’s go.’ I wrote this song called ‘Higher,’ and the lyrics were too sexual, too mature. And my mom was like, ‘This is a great song, but damn, you’re too young for this.’”

On hiding behind her Nickelodeon character: “People liked her and they accepted her and they thought that I was like her. So I used to pretend to be a little more like her than I actually was.”

On her first single “Put Your Hearts Up” not doing well: “I was like, ‘Guys, there has to be a really distinct difference between me and my character.’ And we did that with ‘The Way.’ I dyed my hair back to brown. I made out with a rapper in the video. I made the point I wanted to make. And I was excited to do so after so many years of pretending to be somebody else in front of a lot of people.”

This b.i.t.c.h has a lovely left jawline.

  • Blythe

She’s so annoying with the whole only her left side of the face being photographed.

  • ha

Ha! The left side as usual. She looks like a mouse in this pix. Her songs are sexual because SHE is, people. She’s not the sweet, innocent little thing you think she is. And she’s got a rep for being pretty nasty and vile, too.

  • http://none Girl

That is NOT a flattering photo.

  • PascaleeIam

Yeah. I can’t stand her either. So fake. Also, I can never understand a word she’s singing. Enunciate!

  • J

tired of this hungry-looking girl and that sorry ponytail. she is NOTHING like mariah when mariah was good. stop the madness.

  • nicole

can’t say she sounds the brightest/most pleasant.

  • Tammy

I swear I cannot take this chick as a mature and sexual singer until she hits a growth spurt. I felt the same way about Selena and I’m glad she matured out and I can take her seriously now.

  • diane

I understand the preference for the left side but Ariana is gorgeous but this photography is a big fail. It looks like a stock photo. She’s very talented and hope to hear more. The ballads on her album are gorgeous.

  • Meh

Right?! I can never understand what’s she singing. Horrible. Her only talent is being able to hit a higher register. So? She’s an aweful performer. And now that her true colors are coming out, hopefully this wannabe diva’s 10 seconds of fame will be over soon.

Mariah Carey comparisons my a**. Not even close.

  • Gemini

She seems awfully full of herself.

  • Lovely

    She is beautiful and talented.

  • sx

    she looks ill

  • dee

I have been noticing the left side thing for over a year now when it came to this girl…and im SICK OF IT!! ENUFF.

  • Carly

Wow, that cover photo is hilariously bad! I bet she is pissed.

  • John

She can sing. I just don’t understand why she doesn’t sing so you can understand the lyrics on her own records. Embarassed by the lyrics? She covers a Justin Bieber song on youtube and it’s very good. I still haven’t heard the Bieber version but I can’t imagine it’s better.
No thanks to rapper leftovers though.
