Shonda Rhimes Shuts Down the 'New York Times' Critic Who Called Her an 'Angry Black Woman'

Shonda Rhimes is shooting down the New York Times critic who called her an “angry black woman.”

“Apparently we can be “angry black women” together, because I didn’t know I was one either! @petenowa #LearnSomethingNewEveryday” Shonda wrote on her Twitter account about the NYT review of How to Get Away with Murder – she did not create the show, Pete Nowalk did. “Final thing: (then I am gonna do some yoga): how come I am not “an angry black woman” the many times Meredith (or Addison!) rants? @nytimes”

“Wait. I’m” angry” AND a ROMANCE WRITER?!! I’m going to need to put down the internet and go dance this one out. Because ish is getting real,” Shonda continued on her rant.

The New York Times also implied in their review that Viola Davis, the show’s star, as “less classically beautiful.”

When we stop calling out people by their race is first step to end racism. Couldn’t they just call her An Angry Woman? Why was her race in the sentence? Why can’t we just look at her without the race in the middle of everything. Goes both ways..

  • Me me

It is amazing. Shonda Rhymes is filthy rich, educated, created 3 of the most successful shows on TV, runs a mini empire and still she is reduced to being an “angry black woman”. There is nothing angry about her, Viola or Olivia Pope. Goes to show, no matter what a black woman does, she is always stereotyped. I take issues with the “angry” label they give her because it is a variation of what sexism does to successful women. We can’t be nice and just happy if we are successful. We have to be angry? Ridiculous. Good on Shonda for responding the way she did.

  • Doing It

The show has nothing to do with race and the New York Times made it about race then they blame black people for talking about race. Often, black people have no choice because no matter what they do, they are forced to be in the race conversation whether they want to or not. Couldn’t this “writer” just write about the show without bringing race into it?

Wow, did anyone even read the NYT article, or did they just read the headlines? Because, I read the article and felt it was extremely well written and positive, focusing on how roles for black women have changed from maids and “sassy” best friends to accomplished professional women. Does anyone hear read Essence magazine? Because, the last issue had a cover story on the same Shonda Rimes shows focusing on, you guessed it, the race of the women. And, if you look at the comments about that article, Essence was praised. So, what’s the difference here? There aren’t many African American women on network TV in leading roles, so what the heck is wrong with writing about it?

And, regarding the comment about Viola not having the classically good looks of a Halle Berry or Kerry Washington, well, that is true. Look at even black fashion magazines and see what kind of women they have on their covers. They are more like Halle and Kerry than they do Viola or a Michelle Obama.

  • Really

@sillyme: So now you’re the voice of reason. Here to save the day with… oh wait… your logic? Really. Yes I read the article too and came across with an opposing impression than your glowing review of how black women should be happy that they’re even mentioned in an article. Obviously you don’t find Viola or Michelle Obama attractive. That has nothing to do with the black fashion magazines that I highly doubt you read.

Because Shonda writes complex, female anti-heroes she is an “angry black woman”?? No one is calling Vince Gilligan an “angry white dude” for creating Walter White. That is some bullshit.

The first few sentences of this article says it all. No wonder Shonda and black women are pissed. “When Shonda Rhimes writes her autobiography, it should be called “How to Get Away With Being an Angry Black Woman. When Shonda Rhimes writes her autobiography, it should be called “How to Get Away With Being an Angry Black Woman.”

On Thursday, Ms. Rhimes will introduce “How to Get Away With Murder,” yet another network series from her production company to showcase a powerful, intimidating black woman.”

Forget Angry Black Woman…look at her face. Damn is she ugly. But hey, maybe she is angry and she is black…and from what we know..she is a woman. There are a lot of angry black women in Hollywood and the deep voiced woman on how to get away with murder is another one. LOL. hahahahahahhahahahaha

angry black man: first of all, i doubt you are a man at all (even if you are male). a real man would not write what you wrote. also, you are not black. that said, shonda is 44. in that amount of time, she has created and produced 3 of the most popular shows in television history. she has a mini empire. she has a ton of money and respect. she hires and fires people. she has used her time on this earth to pursue the american dream. ok, so she is not a size 2 but don’t you think she has accomplished more despite what you perceive as unattractive then many people have with more physical beauty? who would you rather be? paris hilton who is a size zero probably or shonda rhimes? if you say paris then i am done with this conversation. bubye. you are bitter and a hater.
