'Gone Girl' Narrowly Beats Out 'Annabelle' at Weekend Box Office

Gone Girl and Annabelle went neck and neck at the box office this weekend, with the Ben Affleck thriller pulling in a narrow lead for the top slot with $38.0 million, Variety reports.

Annabelle brought in an impressive $37.2 in its opening weekend – the film is an origin story for the scary doll featured in last year’s The Conjuring.

The Equalizer came in at number three this weekend with a total of $19.0 million at the box office. The Chloe Moretz and Denzel Washington movie dropped from the number one slot last week.

Rounding out the top five were The Boxtrolls and The Maze Runner, bringing in $12.4 and $12.0, respectively.

Reese Witherspoon‘s The Good Lie, which opened in limited release, brought in a less-than-expected $935,000. Jennifer Garner‘s Men, Women & Children, which also opened in limited release, brought in a very small $48,000 for its 17 locations.
