Angelina Jolie made honorary Dame by Queen – with Brad and kids in tow
    .
The actress received her honorary damehood for services to UK foreign policy and the campaign to end sexual violence
    .
Real and showbiz royalty collided today when the Queen made Angelina Jolie an honorary Dame at Buckingham Palace.
    .
The actress and humanitarian icon received her honour from the Queen in the palace’s grand 1844 room this morning – with Brad and their six children in tow.
    .
Angelina, who looked chic in a pale coat and skirt, received the Insignia of an Honorary Dame Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George from the Queen.
    .
Placing her hand on her chest she bowed her head as the Queen held out the insignia before Brad and their children came in to say hi.
    .
The whole meeting lasted about 20 minutes.
    .
A source said: “Initially the Queen presented the insignia to Angelina alone and after the private audience both Mr Brad Pitt and all children were presented to the Queen.”
    .
Angelina was recognised in the Diplomatic and Overseas Birthday 2014 honours list and received her honorary damehood for services to UK foreign policy and the campaign to end sexual violence.
    .
Despite the honour she is not entitled to call herself a Dame because she is a foreign citizen, but she can put the letters DCMG after her name.
    .
When it was announced she would be receiving the honour in June Angelina said: “To receive an honour related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to. Working on PVSI and with survivors of rape is an honour in itself.
    .
“I know that succeeding in our goals will take a lifetime, and I am dedicated to it for all of mine.”

Buhl veteran’s WWII experiences come to life in “FURY” A film starring Brad Pitt opening October 17
    ============================================================
    .
    By Carol Zakula 10 -10 -14
    .

You may have known George ”Pecky” Smilanich as a “dobri” Serbian kid from Sitnica (old mining location near Buhl), a Buhl High School track star, a member of Buhl’s 1941-42 State Basketball Championship Team, a WWII Sherman tank driver veteran, a social studies teacher and coach in Buhl and Hibbing—or maybe you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting him yet. Sitting in his social studies class, I never realized his own first-hand connections to some of those history lessons. But over time, we all get to appreciate more and more the sacrifices of all those who served…from the lucky ones who returned and now share their stories. Wish you could have sat in on this visit just the other day…

    .
George and Mary (Tootie) Smilanich are in their 80s and 90s. They don’t move as fast as they used to—especially Mary who’s recovering from a recent fall. On the other hand, visitors (including their three children) will assure you that they haven’t slowed down at all when it comes to jumping into each other’s conversations with others and then joking about it. But right now, they mostly can’t hide their excitement.
Fury 2014 poster licensed under Fair Use via Wikipedia.“These are the tickets,” said Mary, holding up letter-size invitations from a prominent side table in the dining room – so they don’t get lost.
    .
You see, next week George and Mary are off to Washington, D.C., with daughter Susan in tow. All expenses are being paid for them to take a short stroll down a red carpet and then into the premiere of the movie “Fury” on October 15 at the Newseum Theater on Pennsylvania Avenue.
    .
And the gesture and honor are well deserved. For one thing, George actually lived through much of what Brad Pitt and the rest of the cast will be acting out – a war story about a 2nd Armored Division M4 Sherman tank behind enemy lines in Europe.
    .
George and Mary SmilanichGeorge served in the 2nd Armored Division (aka “Hell on Wheels”), under General Patton in invasions in North Africa, Sicily, and then Normandy. Just prior to the Normandy invasion, his Division underwent training at Tidworth Barracks in England.
    .
It was there while working on his tank one day, that he was interrupted by a “How’s the tank running?”and was surprised to look up into the face of General Patton himself. (A story about George’s 2nd Armored Division involvement by Al Zdon appearing in August 17, 2012 edition of Hometown Focus.)
    .
But there is one other thing George did, just recently, to further earn those premiere tickets. He, along with three 2nd Armored Division veterans from other regiments, served as consultants for the “Fury” cast.
A model of an M-4 Sherman tank that belongs to George Smilanich. Photo by Carol ZakulaIt all started in August when “Fury’s” production staff contacted a veteran’s organization executive, who in turn called George. George’s initial “no” took a few days to become a “yes.” Three days later, George and Mary were on a flight to L.A., and not too sure of what to expect there. When they reached the studio, they met the other three veterans, and were then escorted to a small conference room still not too sure of what to expect and wondering if they were under-dressed for formal discussions with business-like actors.
What they didn’t expect was what happened next.
    .
The door opened, and “Fury’s” five lead role actors bounced into the room, very down-to-earth in both their clothes and their conversations. Mary remembers her hand being snatched up with a, “Hi, I’m ‘Shy’. How dee do to you!”

    .
And so went the introductions all around, followed by three hours of simultaneous dialogues around the conference table strewn with WWII newspaper and magazine articles, photos, and posters. According to George, there were lots of questions about what daily life was like—both the military and the mundane.
    .
A five-autograph photo of this unique little group conference – of veterans and the actors who would portray an important part of those veterans’ lives – graces the Smilanich living room these days.

    .
George handed the photo to me for a closer look. There they were: Jon Bernthal, Michael Peña, Logan Lerman, Shia LaBeouf, and Brad Pitt.

    .
When I asked if the conference discussions continued for a second day, George said no, that the actors had to fly to England the next day to commence filming. However, the film team hadn’t finished with its consultants just yet.
    .
George mostly remembers his second day at the studio beginning in the hands of a make-up artist. (Yes, a lot of real men wear make-up…at least in Hollywood.) They sat him in a chair, facing a camera, a camera man, and a film staff person who interviewed him, and with Mary sitting on some little bleachers in the background.

    .
Mostly he was encouraged to relax and just answer the questions as best he could…the way he normally talked. And so he did, though he couldn’t tell you how long that went on, or what questions they asked him, or what would become of clips of that video.
    .
As you can imagine, the whirlwind Hollywood trip and everything it represented was – and is – pretty overwhelming for the Smilanich couple as it would be for anyone. “The whole thing was like a fairy tale,” George says, though he admits the details are a bit of a blur.
Now, the pressure’s off. And the only details that matter are regarding George and Mary’s trip east on October 14. Those details – like the ones of the West Coast trip – are manageable with the help of Steven, Tom, and Susan, the three off-spring who are proud of their parents’ modesty.

    .
And with all the recent excitement, the “kids” are a little more tolerant than usual of this loving couple’s tendency to finish each other’s sentences. Will George be in one of the end clips? Guess he’ll – and we’ll – have to see the movie to find out.
    .
Here’s Columbia/Sony Pictures’ film synopsis of “FURY”—opening in theaters October 17:
“April, 1945. As the Allies make their final push in the European Theatre, a battlehardened army sergeant named Wardaddy (Brad Pitt) commands a Sherman tank and her five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Outnumbered and outgunned, and with a rookie soldier thrust into their platoon, Wardaddy and his men face overwhelming odds in their heroic attempts to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany.”

Angelina Jolie – What A Dame!

    Don’t you love this photo?
    .
It makes us want to burst into song: There is nothing like a dame! Nothing in the world …
    .
Angelina Jolie did a courtsey before Queen Elizabeth II today in jolly old England before receiving a very special honor, one that was announced in June.
    .
Jolie was presented with … get ready … “the Insignia of an Honorary Dame Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George” by Queen Elizabeth II in the 1844 Room at Buckingham Palace.
    .
Mrs. Brad Pitt, 39, was receiving the honorary damehood (DCMG) for services to U.K. foreign policy and the campaign to end war zone sexual violence.
    .
But even though Jolie received the damehood, please do not call her Dame Angelina. According to royal rules, because she is not a British or Commonwealth citizen, Jolie won’t be entitled to use the title “dame” before her name.

Angelina Jolie Meets Queen Elizabeth II to Receive Honorary Damehood: Brad Pitt, Kids In Attendance as Well
    =================================================================

CELEBRITY NEWS OCT. 10, 2014 AT 9:15AM BY ESTHER LEE AND OMID SCOBIE
    .
The Queen of Hollywood meets the Queen of England! Queen Elizabeth IIhonored Angelina Jolie on Friday, Oct. 10, face-to-face inside Buckingham Palace in London. A source tells Us Weekly that her husbandBrad Pitt and their six kids were present for the special occasion.
    .
The actress and humanitarian, 39, met with Her Royal Majesty in the Palace’s 1844 Room, where the Queen presented her with an Honorary Dame Grand Cross. (An honorary dame is the female equivalent of knighthood, the highest honor bestowed upon a citizen of the British Empire.)
    .
“The kids were very excited to be at Buckingham Palace,” a source close to the actress tells Us of Maddox, 13, Pax, 10, Zahara, 9, Shiloh, 8, and 6-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox. “Everyone dressed up really smart.”
For the event, Jolie looked resplendent in a tailored lilac skirt and matching jacket, cinched at her waist. The Maleficent actress swept her hair back in a classy updo and kept her jewelry at a minimum, wearing tiny pearl earrings and her wedding band.
    .
When the Queen presented her with the award, the mother of six beamed with her right hand over her heart.
    .
Since Jolie is not a citizen of the Commonwealth, she receives an Honorary Dame Grand Cross instead of the formal title of Dame. Still, “DCMG” can be written beside her name.
    .
In June, Jolie was made an honorary dame in the Queen’s Birthday Honors List, for her humanitarian work. The award recognized Jolie’s efforts to combat sexual violence in war-torn regions around the world. The announcement overlapped with Jolie’s stay in London for the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence In Conflict, which was co-chaired by the U.N. Special Envoy.
    .
“To receive an honor related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to,” Jolie said. “Working on PVSI and with survivors of rape is an honor in itself. I know that succeeding in our goals will take a lifetime, and I am dedicated to it for all of mine.”
    .
Jolie has been directing and starring in her upcoming movie, By the Sea, with her husband in Malta. The family flew in via private jet on Thursday, Oct. 9, and will return to the gorgeous destination on Saturday. Adds the insider: “It was difficult to take time off from the film, but Angie wouldn’t have missed this for the world. What a day!”

Angelina Jolie Becomes Honorary Dame During Buckingham Palace Reception With Queen Elizabeth II

    .
    The accolades keep rolling in!
    .
In her first official appearance since becoming Mrs. Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie was made an honorary dame by Queen Elizabeth II for her work to fight sexual violence and for services to U.K. foreign policy.
    .
The Maleficent star cannot officially be addressed as “dame” in the U.K. because she is a foreign citizen.
    .
Jolie, who has six children with Pitt, was given the award during a private ceremony at Buckingham Palace. Her Majesty, 88, presented the By the Sea actress, screenwriter and director with the insignia of an Honorary Dame Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George.
    .
The Unbroken director was made a dame in HRH’s Birthday Honors List. “To receive an honor related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to. Working on PVSI and with survivors of rape is an honor in itself,” the Academy Award winning-actress, 39, said in June. “I know that succeeding in our goals will take a lifetime, and I am dedicated to it for all of mine.”
    .
Jolie, who serves as a U.N. Special Envoy, co-founded the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative (PVSI) along with U.K. Foreign Secretary William Hague in 2012. The initiative aims to increase internationally prosecutions for sexual violence and support countries in preventing and responding to the global issue.
    .
The actress made a splash at the G8 Foreign Ministers Summit in June. “We must work together—legislators, political, doctors, investigators—to enable immediate against those guilty of war crimes prosecution,” she tells the French edition of Marie Claire. Of course, her work isn’t done. “Every morning, I get the UN report on sexual recent abuses against women in 20 countries, and the progress of actions undertaken.”

It’s official: Angelina Jolie is an honorary dame
    ====================================
    .
    .
    By Zara Kenyon OCTOBER 10, 2014 @ 3:07 PM

    .
Just wonderful. The actress received her award from the Queen this morning.
    .
We’ve already firmly established that Angelina Jolie is one kickass woman, and it seems the Queen agrees, as today she’s made the actress an honorary dame. The damehood comes as a tribute to her services for UK foreign policy and recognises her incredible humanitarian work and campaigns to end sexual violence.
    .
Angelina received the insignia of an Honorary Dame Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George during a private reception with the Queen at Buckingham Palace this morning. Husband, Brad Pitt and all of her children were also presented to the Queen, as she became the first American woman to receive the esteemed award.

    .
A source told the Mirror: “Initially the Queen presented the insignia to Angelina alone and after the private audience both Mr Brad Pitt and all children were presented to the Queen.”
    .
Though being a foreign citizen means Angelina can’t call herself a dame, she will be able to put the letters DCMG after her name. When announced in June that she would receiving such an honour, she spoke out on how much this monumental award means to hear.
    .
“To receive an honour related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to. Working on PVSI and with survivors of rape is an honour in itself.
    .
“I know that succeeding in our goals will take a lifetime, and I am dedicated to it for all of mine.”
    .
In other Angelina-is-awesome news, she’s set to undergo another brave surgery, which follows the double mastectomy she had last year as a result of being BRCA positive. Having a BRCA mutation increased her risk of developing breast cancer, so she took preventative measures and spoke out to raise awareness to others. Next year she will be also having a hysterectomy, as she’s genetically at risk for ovarian cancer – the disease that took her mother’s life.
    .
But now, we hope she’s celebrating in style with her beautiful family. Congratulations Angelina Jolie DCMG.

Angelina Jolie Receives Her ‘Honorary Dame’ Award from Queen Elizabeth
    ============================================================

    .

    10/10/2014 AT 10:50 AM EDT
    .
Newly married Angelina Jolie made it a family outing as she went to Buckingham Palace to meet Queen Elizabeth on Friday.

    .
The actress and humanitarian, 39, had a private audience with the Queen, 88, who presented her with the physical symbol of her recently bestowed title of honorary dame – the Insignia of an Honorary Dame Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George.
    .
They met for about 20 minutes, a palace source tells PEOPLE, with most of the time taken up by the presentation and a following conversation the Queen had with Jolie. Then, in what must have been a memorable moment for the family, Pitt, 50, and the couple’s six children – Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Vivienne and Knox – were ushered in to the grand 1844 Room to be presented to the Queen.
    .

Unfortunately, no media – or spokespeople for the royal family – were in attendance, so there are no details of the meeting. A royal source says that while there was a “serious nature” to the visit, the atmosphere at the palace meeting “was a happy family one.”

    .

It was revealed in June that Jolie was being made an honorary dame in the list of recipients issued to mark the Queen’s birthday. The title recognizes Jolie’s work in founding of the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative (PSVI) and the contribution she has made toward the British foreign policy objective of ending sexual violence in conflict.
    .

The Jolie-Pitts have had much to celebrate of late. In August they were toasting their secret wedding at their countryside home in France.
    .

Audiences with the Queen are not announced, so it had not been made public that Jolie had an appointment at the palace Friday.
    .

The family is thought to have come in from Gozo, one of the Maltese islands, where they are living during the making of the upcoming filmBy the Sea.
    .
Honors such as the conferring of knights and dames, and others like CBE and OBE medals, are normally given in public ceremonies. But sometimes they take place in private at home or abroad – especially if the recipient, like Jolie, is not British.

JACK O’CONNELL INTERVIEW: “I’M NOT INTERESTED IN BEING COOL OR MODERN”
    ====================================================================
    .
    STEVEN MACKENZIE OCT 10, 2014
    .

Jack O’Connell – “Britain’s hottest young actor” – on why Angelina Jolie picked him for her movie, Unbroken
    .
Jack O’Connell was picked by Angelina Jolie to star in her next film, which will make him a very big star indeed. Although it is not released until December, Unbroken, directed by Jolie and written by the Coen Brothers, is already generating Oscar buzz.
    .
A cross between Chariots of Fire, Castaway and The Bridge on the River Kwai, Unbroken is a biopic of Louie Zamperini – an American athlete who competed at the 1936 Berlin Olympics before becoming a pilot during World War II. He was shot down and survived 47 days adrift on the Pacific before being captured by the Japanese Navy and spending the rest of the war enduring terrible conditions in a prisoner-of-war camp. Zamperini died in July, aged 97.
    .
It is a role of Lawrence of Arabia proportions, coveted by a pack of hungry Hollywood heartthrobs – curiously, even Tony Curtis was up for the part when the rights to Zamperini’s life story were first optioned by Universal in the 1950s. But to play this American hero, Angelina Jolie chose a roguish young actor from Derby.
    .
“There was added pressure, in that I’m from here [Britain] and there was a queue of Americans who probably felt more affinity to the role,” he says. “What I knew went in my favour is I’ve always been fascinated and very influenced by that generation. I wanted to put that across to Angie. The enormity of things, I choose to not look at so much. It’s not a question of size, it’s a question of content. That’s what I get excited about.
    .
“So of course with Unbroken I had plenty of content to get excited about. The studio and what Angie is to the industry has to come secondary. But when someone like that is paying attention to you it doesn’t seem so far-fetched and absurd to hopefully find myself in their position one day.”
    .
O’Connell’s first film, Shane Meadows’ brilliant and brutal This is England, was followed by a couple of years popping pills and pretty girls in Channel 4’s Skins. Increasingly bigger roles in bigger films followed and it was last year’s stark prison drama Starred Up that really made critics stand up and take notice.
    .
His performance as a naïve but nasty young offender was compared by The New Yorker to James Dean and Marlon Brando, The Hollywood Reporter remarked upon his “James Cagney-like bantam cock vitality and quicksilver mood changes”; Mark Kermode spotted “a hint of the young Malcolm McDowell”.
    .
Why does O’Connell, 24, think critics see that indefinable quality of a golden age actor in him? “Cos I’m a gentleman, Steve. I mind my Ps and Qs. I respect people and call them by their necessary titles. I feel there’s a proper way of doing things. I’m not interested in being cool or modern or none of that, mate.”

Such a nice surprise. I thought this was going to happen in November.

I wonder if this means she and the kids will fly back to the US with Brad for the Fury promotion.. I hope this means they will do the Premier together.. Now that would be perfect.
