Nicki Minaj Responds to 'Anaconda' Music Video Criticism in 'Billboard'

Nicki Minaj is the golden girl on the cover of Billboard magazine’s latest issue, out on newsstands on Monday (November 10)!

Here’s what the 31-year-old rapper had to share with the mag:

On her time at American Idol: “Once I did Idol, a lot of people would come up to me and say, ‘Oh, you’re smarter than I thought.’ What does that mean? Was I making weird faces [that made you think] I was stupid?” … Thank God I did that show. At least I was able to show my true self, speak and have a mind.”

On criticisms of the “Anaconda” video and embracing curves: “Everything we see that’s labeled as beautiful is very skinny. In the song I kind of say, ‘F— them skinny girls.’ But it’s all love. I consider myself a skinny girl. I went overboard with the video to show that I’m not going to hide. And those big-booty dancers I have, they’re not going to hide. Black girls should feel sexy, powerful and important too.”

On staying competitive: “It’s corny when rappers feel like they’ve made it and they don’t have to prove themselves anymore. You should always be competing. You should always be trying to show that you’re the best. My album is going to be important to hip-hop.”

I’m not a conservative and don’t feel I have ‘dated views.’. Face it–the woman has little talent so uses her mostly nude body to be noticed. She knows it—-we know it. Good thing she’s living in this generation. Before videos, people had to rate a singer by her voice–not by how naked she was.

There’s a contemporary side to Hip-Hop, like Malcolm Mclaren skipping lessons (anaerobic exercise).

  • Elettra Gismondi

Nicki’s responses are incredibly irrelevant. All she wants to do is get attention and make everyone who’s against her look dumb and in the wrong. Black girls being naked and twerking and showing their butts isn’t sexy, and it doesn’t make them look empowered — it makes them look like dumb prostitutes with no class.

…..Nobody hates the video because the dancers aren’t model thin.

People hate the video because she admits to having sex with a guy to get drugs, because she skinny shames, and otherwise raps about being a dumb fucking idiot.

And because it sounds like it was written by a bunch of 12-14 year old kids, in terms of quality.

she’s skinny?! yeah, and I bet she thinks her farts smell nice too. this vulgar, materialistic, talent-free noise factory makes me weep for the state of modern, “music”, (if you consider manipulating samples of other songs and using computer-created rhythms and other machines to in fact be music/musical). popular hip hop/rap nowadays is ALL THE SAME!! weed, money, brand-name this, brand-name that, big butts, superficiality…it all equates to a massive bore. I find them all repellent.

  • wangson

agreed. big butt fetishes are a bizarre phenomenon that, (while the media would have us believe otherwise) appeals to an EXTREMELY limited contingent of society. I find them utterly repellent and presumably disgustingly putrid. to me, professing one’s love of a gigantic turd volcano is akin to admitting that that you’ve an urgent fetish for female Cyclops’s – or for women with furry backs. it’s utterly baffling that a dude would find the aroma of human turds appealing.
