Louis Tomlinson Slams Journalist, Rants That He is Straight on Twitter

One Direction band member Louis Tomlinson is not happy with a journalist who wrote a headline that seemed to him to be misleading about his sexuality.

“@JennSelby The fact that you work for such a ‘credible’ paper and you would talk such rubbish is laughable. I am in fact straight.” the 22-year-old boy bander wrote on his Twitter account.

The headline in question, from The Telegraph, read “Louis Tomlinson supports gay Apple CEO Tim Cook – days after Harry Styles‘ comments on gender and sexuality,” and pictured Louis wearing an Apple t-shirt with the original logo on the front, which happens to be of a rainbow.

If he was secure with his sexuality he wouldn’t feel the need to defend it…..

  • Jon M’Shulla

Come on Louis. No you aren’t. Come out and play. You will be free.

  • jade_15

He was so rude and homophobic… totally unnecessary, especially because the article doesn’t even mention his sexuality.

  • lejla

I really feel sorry for this guy. It must be frustrating to defend yourself constantly.

  • mila27

What? But why? The article never mentions his sexuality or implies it. Why is he such a jerk?

  • mila27

but defend from what? the girl never says anything about his sexuality? How insecure he is that someone calling him supportive makes him attack the journalist?

  • Julian

She also didn’t say he was gay, she just said he supported Tim Cook.

  • lejla

He obviously is insecure but I think it has nothing to do with his sexuality.

  • svsv87

It wasn’t about the article, it was about the constant fan and now media insistence that he’s in a relationship with his bandmate. It must be quite annoying that just when that nonsense seemed to be dying down, the media is now picking up on these fans delusions and reigniting the story again. Frankly, he’s sick of it and has been for a long time. Maybe if everyone stopped insisting they know his sexuality and trying to prove it, he wouldn’t be so easily annoyed!

  • Jay

It should be noted that just yesterday Louis was given an opportunity to deny the gay rumours surrounding him and Harry in a live stream. They were specifically asked “What’s the oddest rumour you’ve ever heard about yourself?” Louis replied that he couldn’t think of any that really bugged him, and Harry said he liked some of the rumours about himself. Then today we get this tweet from him. Personally I don’t think it was him tweeting at all, it seems much more likely that it was his homophobic management company, who we know has access to their twitters, and who Louis has constantly expressed disdain for.

  • Jay

he’s not insecure at all, in person Louis has expressed support and general good feelings towards the gay community. He has also referred to himself as “flamboyant” when asked to describe himself in one word, called himself “camp”, talked about how he is appreciative of all fans gay or straight and worn clothing that supports equal rights (a “love is equal” shirt). This was not louis tweeting. It simply does not add up.

  • ηιgнт cнαηgєѕ✪lαrry

OMFG THANKYOU!!! someone who finally understands!

  • Nick

I don’t care, as a gay person, I took offense to this. The article didn’t mention his sexuality once. Let’s not make excuses. If he was secure in his sexuality he wouldn’t feel the need to defend himself against rumors. Every celebrity deals with gay rumors. I’m sure in five years when his band is no longer relevant, he’s gonna come out anyway and he’ll be putting his foot in his mouth. In the meantime, I feel bad for anyone he’s with real or fake until he gets his shit together.

  • Diane Joy

They can’t come out until they dump Modest Mgmt.

  • fxknbands

as a person in the LGBT community, I didn’t. He is still finding out himself out. Just because he is a celebrity does not mean that he knows his sexuality right away. You can’t make him feel terrible about himself just because he has no idea.

And this band will be relevant in 5 years. They are changing the music industry into a good one.

  • Diane Joy

Louis and Harry have ample opportunity to clear up the rumors but they don’t/won’t. All we ever hear is that “People genuinely think me and Harry are in a relationship. They genuinely think that.”
As far as these tweets, it’s been proven before that Modest will at times tweet from the boys accounts. They’ve even instructed the boys to only tweet from Modest’s Twitter account.

  • Lacy

Not quite as randomly insecure as you think. If you’re aware of the rumors that he and Harry Styles are secretly dating, that’s big enough to set him off. It’s pretty disgusting, the amount of people that tweet at his family and girlfriend, etc., and have been for the last four years. Those boys can’t even stand next to each other without it being a big deal. Thousands of his fans trend it every day. If you’re aware of it and how big it’s come to grow, then it does seem like she’s hinting at it. If you weren’t, he comes off as a complete dick.

  • fxknbands

Clearly you’ve never worked in the music industry, management cannot control social media, they can make you tweet certain things like promoting an album or single or movie but celebrities already do that because they are usually excited. Management modest or not they cannot go onto Harry’s or Louis’s twitter account. That is going against ANY contract.

  • fxknbands

Louis Tomlinson is not a jerk. He is a funny lad but thats it.

And this article does imply it.

It’s one of those reading between the lines type of thing.

  • fxknbands

When you are in the eye of the public you need to defend it in some way.

As a student I have to defend that I am straight because I am more like a guy than I am a girl.

I’m not in a big public eye yet I still defend it.

    He is.

It’s harder to be in the public eye. And maybe he isn’t secure with it, but we all do not know that for sure.

  • Jay

they have literally messed up in the past and proven that they are on the boy’s twitters. they can and they do go on the boy’s accounts.

  • Jay

lol you literally just said your straight. stop trying so hard.

  • NeverLetMeGo

Is he a bottom or a top or vers?

  • NeverLetMeGo

He’s cute he could do much better than Harry Styles

  • NeverLetMeGo

Why do they have a picture of a lesbian wailing into a microphone in the picture accompanying this post?

  • LouAndI

Reading between the lines? I think she was pretty direct in saying how Louis supports gay people, which he does. Why are people finding ways to justify his disgusting and immature behavior?

  • Chad Williams

Bullwinkle addresses those nasty moose rumors.

  • 1D Fan

What is done in his name is his responsibility at the end of the day. 100% homophobic response and horrible role model for his young impressionable fan base. Especially in light of the fact that gay marriage became legal in the UK this year. Why hasn’t his management company or his bandmates responded either? A PR spokesman needs to say something unless this is a deliberate management sanctioned tweet. Which it appears it is. In which case this management company needs to be held accountable as well.

  • Danafang

Nothing in the article or headline was “misleading” with regards to Louis’s sexuality: only that he was supporting Tim Cook, apparently. What I find problematic is that he is so upset about this.

  • Danafang

He is a grown man he should get over it. Celebrities are beset by rumors all the time; he is lucky his are so innocuous.

  • Danafang

He directly tweeted her and referred to the article; calling it “rubbish”. No matter how sick of rumors he is; having a tizzy over an article that merely said he was supporting Tim Cook is childish.

  • weirdlypoetic

I don’t believe for one second that Louis Tomlinson actually wrote the tweets. His behavior, in person, has never suggested he is anything but supportive of LGBTQ+ community and a lovely, good and kind-hearted person. I believe he is not in control of his Twitter and I believe that this is 1D’s management’s attempt to preserve the strictly heterosexual image that has been built for these boys – the image that is desirable to young girls and conservative parents, who are the ones that spend most money on 1D merchandise. I believe these tweets were sent against Louis’ will. I also loathe anyone who doesn’t see the tweets as problematic and anyone who talks about someone’s right to “defend” himself against being linked to LGBTQ+.

  • StopAndThink

    You are a fvcking moron.
How would you like it if someone kept implying you are ‘straight’ and gay is “just a choice” and you’re just seeking attention and blah blah.
It’s the same thing. The guy has a girlfriend, respect their relationship ffs!
You are just as bad as the homophobes by saying you know his sexuality better than him! Stop forcing people to confess to something they’re not. You are sick with your whole “He will come out when they are done anyway”. Do you even hear yourself?
This is why people don’t want to be associated with you and support LGBT issues. You are just like the rest of the extremist organizations.

Reserve judgement guys, while it seems unlikely that anyone could have signed a contract so restrictive their management could tweet things like this and maybe he is a mean spirited, uneducated homophobe. But its not impossible to imagine a young, poor, vulnerable x-factor contestant who just came fourth might have signed something like this.

Its abudantly clear, with a little research, that these these boys have some to limited control over their twitters and as such I’m deeply suspicious. Louis Tomlinson in person and on video has never made a statement like this and tends to swerve around the topic of sexuality and his “girlfriend”. A little more digging shows that these boys don’t have complete (if any) control over their public image (see doncaster rovers takeover) and this could hint towards very suffocating contract signed during their x factor period.

Give louis a year (or three), wait till he has safely broken contract and actually has a legitimate platform to tell his side of the story, perhaps he is a raging homophobe or MAYBE he is tied down in legal requirements :)

  • boo u

perhaps all celebrities and their management teams should take a leaf out of George Clooneys book and acknowledge the inherently homophobic nature of ostracising fans by aggressively defending your “heterosexuality”

  • Ange

What a fucking disappointment. At this point, I really can’t tell if it’s a shitty contract or if he’s a homophobic asshole. What a fucking disappointment, I’m telling you. I wouldn’t want my kids to go near a band that encourages this blatant disregard for equality and this raging homophobia — ever. My sister is always insisting that Louis Tomlinson is a good person and supportive of the LGBT+ community but I’m starting to really doubt it. She says they’ve signed a stupid contract, but really you never know. I’m not going to spew hate at this man, because it’s no use. But I’m disappointed. Harry Styles seems to be the only openly supportive advocate for LGBT+ people. WHY WOULD YOU DEFEND YOURSELF FROM SOMETHING THAT ISN’T. FUCKING. OFFENSIVE.
The One Direction fan base is a toxic, homophobic environment. Either their PR/Management is shitty as fuck or they’re genuinely shitty people. I’m just so disappointed. Young girls will look at his tweets and think being LGBT+ IS OFFENSIVE, and that you shouldn’t ever be accused of supporting them. So toxic.
I’m going to dig in to this band a little more because I’m curious. What a weird boy band, really. Their actions have always contradicted their words.

  • Ange

Where can I get more info about their management, contract, etc? I’m curious. I went to their website but it isn’t very helpful.

  • Storm

Am I missing something here? The headline in no way says nor implies that he is gay. How dumb is this kid?!

  • Jae Alicia

“Louis Tomlinson supports gay Apple CEO Tim Cook – days after Harry Styles comments on gender and sexuality,”

I actually do see why he was upset with the headline. Was it really necessary for the article to have Harry’s name here? In all honesty, I was upset with Louis’ tweet. It was beyond rude and disheartening but now seeing the headline on it’s own made me see his point of view. He had receive so much shit about his sexuality with his own fans and he must have turned so sensitive about it. I’m still upset about Louis here but the same time I feel bad. I don’t really care if Larry’s real or if Elounor is real but Louis has not yet made furthers claims that Larry is. Having a girlfriend and your own fans calling her a beard, must be a tough situation. I love Louis and I don’t expect him to be perfect. I just hope he doesn’t get too sensitive about things like this again.

  • Jae Alicia

it was implying it though. I mean, is Harry’s name really needed to be mentioned?

I do admit that this was beyond rude. I think Louis had gotten too sensitive with what he’s going through with all the rumors regarding his sexuality. I’m not defending him. I still hate how he handled this and I wish he would be more careful next time. But then again the human emotion and sensitivity isn’t something we can control.

Calling someone a “beard” is more than a “little tough situation”, it’s OFFENSIVE. To her, to him and their family.
What makes you think you know HIS sexuality better than him!? You are not a homophobe for stating you are STRAIGHT.
Are you actually serious!? How would you like it if someone kept saying you are straight even though you are gay?

  • StopAndThink

How is it not offensive to call his girlfriend a “beard”?!
It is offensive when he keeps telling you he is heterosexual – why can’t that not be respected? The guy has a girlfriend and some of you seem to not be able to respect that.
You are not a homophobe for stating that the rumors and implications are wrong.

  • StopAndThink

Perhaps it’s because idiots like you can’t respect people when they keep telling you they are heterosexual.
They have to “aggressively” defend themselves when you keep making up rumors and implying sh*t that isn’t true. The guy has a girlfriend and she is called a “Beard” and other nasty things about his sexuality. You wouldn’t like it if someone kept saying they are gay but media and others would imply and make up rumors that they are just attention seeker and are in fact straight.
Saying you are straight and being fed up with jouornos implying stuff and trying to be smart about it by wording it in such ways is offensive. To him, his girlfriend and their family who has to deal with it.

  • StopAndThink

It’s people like you who make it hard for LGBT issues to be taken seriously.
Saying you are straight is not homophobic. Maybe he and his girlfriend are sick and tired of people and journalists making up things and talking about their sexuality. Calling his gf a “beard” and saying he is “in the closet”. Maybe, just MAYBE, he is fed up and have no choice but to aggressively defend himself. He is sick of journalists implying things about his sexuality and it’s more than a little skeevy that jounralists who are much older than him, make up things about him and his bandmates sexuality, it’s gross.
