Benedict Cumberbatch Explains His Old-School Engagement Announcement to Future Bride Sophie Hunter

The Internet was shocked when news of Benedict Cumberbatch‘s engagement to Sophie Hunter came in the form of a newspaper announcement.

The 38-year-old British actor and his soon-to-be bride put an announcement in The Times to let their friends know, and now, Benedict is talking about his decision to announce the engagement in that fashion.

“It’s what I would have done if I wasn’t famous. It’s a normal thing to do in my country. It was a way of telling our friends who we hadn’t been able to tell before [they saw] some grainy shot of a ring on her finger,” Benedict said to USA Today.

Funnily enough, just a few days after Benedict‘s announcement, Spice Girl Geri Halliwell announced her engagement today via the same newspaper.

Yes perhaps if your name is Benedict then it may well be normal to announce your engagement in a newspaper but the majority of British people do not do this and it is only “normal” for those of a certain class, ie. upper-middle class like the Cumberbatches. But I do agree it is so much classier and more mature to do it that way than via some stupid Tweet or Facebook status update. Glad to see some people still retain that.

Come now, I love Ben, but it’s a well-known fact his family is inbred. He’s said it himself. So it would be just same as usual!
