'Hunger Games: Mockingjay' Dominates Weekend Box Office But Hits Franchise Low Numbers

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 nabbed the biggest opening box office of the year with a record $123 million!

The film – which stars Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Banks, Natalie Dormer, Sam Claflin, and more, hit a franchise low, however. Catching Fire opened to $158 million on the same weekend last year, and The Hunger Games opened with $152.5 in March of 2012, THR reports. The film still brought in a lot of money, making $152 million total including international markets!

Big Hero 6 came in at number 2 at the box office with $20.1 million brought in.

Interstellar, in its third week at the box office, took in $15 million. Rounding out the top five were Dumb and Dumber To, which brought in $13.8 million and Gone Girl, which has made a total of $156 million domestically.

Well yea it made less even Harry Potter and Twilight made less with their part 1′s and mixed reactions came from it being split so that didn’t help that ppl complained they wanted more but hey it’s a part 1 what did you expect ? IMAX wasn’t even a option its still over 100 million dollars geez but I think part 2 will be the best in the franchise.

All the year was poor on box office. Even Interstellar underperformed with all the hype

The box office projections for “Mockingjay” were still around $140-$160 million, factoring in no IMAX and slow profit year. So by those numbers, the movie has done poorly. Nobody’s saying another possible reason-the backlash from the nudes and/or Martin “relationship”. I’ve seen and heard enough from various sources to know Lawrence’s image was hurt by both in varying degrees. That image is what helps drive THG franchise among tweens/teens.
Parents have voiced concern in tabloid posts and other means over how Lawrence’s personal life has negatively affected her image as a good role model for their kids, and they have said they’d keep their kids from going to the movie and/or buying merchandise related to it. That may be cutting into Lionsgate’s profits right now.
The fact the movie’s doing better overseas bears this out to some extent. With less focus there on her nudes and Martin “relationship”, the desire to see the movie is still paramount.
