Bette Midler Slams Ariana Grande For 'Looking So Ridiculous'

Bette Midler isn’t afraid to criticize Ariana Grande in a recent interview.

“It’s terrible! It’s always surprising to see someone like Ariana Grande with that silly high voice, a very wholesome voice, slithering around on a couch looking so ridiculous,” the 68-year-old entertainer shared to Telegraph.

She added, “I mean, it’s silly beyond belief and I don’t know who’s telling her to do it. I wish they’d stop. But it’s not my business, I’m not her mother. Or her manager. Maybe they tell them that’s what you’ve got to do. Sex sells. Sex has always sold.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK of Bette Midler’s comments on Ariana Grande?

I agree with you Beth. So true.

  • Nicole Miller

It’s not a jab, it’s true. Her voice doesn’t fit the sexual image she goes for.

  • Broadzilla

Good for you,Bette. She looked and sounded ridiculous, especially with her obnoxious brother dancing to her in the audience.

  • Jake93

her body look like a 13 year old kid not sexy or appealing at all

  • suzie

The stars of today are gone in two years. Only a few have a career beyond that. I don’t even pay attention to Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Rihanna, and the other teeny bops. There is more REAL talent out there, if you look for it, and they are not household names. Bette Midler and the stars of old, must just be shaking there heads at what’s out there now. It’s very shallow.

  • mountainbdywhs

I agree with Bette. And I’ve seen Beaches re-runs who knows how many times; she’s great in that. What’s with the 2-inch gap between Ariana’s boobs? Those implants are hideous.

  • mountainbdywhs

I agree with you the majority aren’t talented. But Swift (2008 at least) and Rihanna (2007 at least) have been around for years. Unfortunately people just listen to whatever is rammed down their throats.

  • Vy Nguyen

Why target Ariana? Because she has that young wholesome look and her music appeals to may preteen girls? Please, I’ve seen worse.

  • Marie

You´ve got to love Bette Midler! True words!

  • Ely Kinney Teller Jammf

    Agreed with Bette! Period.

  • Sarah-Julia Karbowniczek

but can you imagine Taylor Swift in her 30s singing about constant “teenage-heartbreak”?

  • Christina

I couldn’t agree more. And I don’t feel like it’s so much as a personal attack towards Ariana, but more of an attack at the music industry in general. She just took her as an example. I wish it was more about the music, but when it comes down to it it’s all about the image and how you perceive yourself, which is really sad.

  • Christina

Yeah most likely, but Taylor Swift have had a really long career and I think she will continue to have success. She writes most of her own music and she is respected by a lot of people.

  • suzie

You’re right. I should have said Miley Cyrus instead of taylor swift.

  • Legendary Trolly

She actually sings about all aspects of relationships and is very mature for her age in her music.

  • Elvisfan Harb

All the Disney singers do this after they leave Disney….

It’s not that I don’t agree with Midler to a certain extent. I’m just surprised that Grande is the one she chose to speak out on. Really?? Grande is one of the least hoochie ones out there. What about the hoochie trash J-Lo is ? The raunchiness of Beyonce? The tacky see-through clothing of Rihanna? I don’t need but to mention Miley Cyrus & everybody thinks shank. And don’t EVEN get me started on America’s EMBARRASSING trash called the Kardashians. Grande may look ridiculous trying to play biggie girl in her mommy’s sexy, grownup clothes, but she not NEARLY as bad as all these others. She’s more laughable than barfable. Again, I just don’t understand why Midler criticized the little girl of the bunch when there’s more offensive ones to go after . ???? Kind of makes her appear like a big bully to me.

    Her body looks supersexy.

  • HaylorToU

Ariana looks like a child prostitute. Someone needs to sit her down and kindly says that the sexy image doesn’t suit her. Talented girl, though.

  • Arrow 12

What a mean thing to say. She is making her money just like Bette did. If you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all.

  • Arrow 12

I remember Bette wearing some pretty racy outfits in the 70′s. She had a pretty big chest and let them all hang out.

  • Doryphore

    No, she is NOT.

  • Legendary Trolly

You better listen to her music then. This chick is a child prodigy. Their will never be another artist in HISTORY that will sell a million in ONE week, 3 consecutive times, on three different albums!

  • Louise

I love Bette she says it how it is. Ariana is ridiculous, quite a lot of them are to be honest. They get told or they think they have to dress a certain way, sing a certain way, dance/act a certain way – high rifts (which is annoying btw ) Sad really but these people are supposed to be role models in the public eye and someone should tell them.

  • Anya

Because Rihanna, J-Lo, Beyonce are woman who present themselves as women (whether you like them or not, not the point). I love Miley for not giving a shit about what people think about her. but she changed her image and basically said “stop, I’m not 16 year old girl and I’m gonna act sexy and wild and whatever, whether you will like it or not, I’m not gonna be a seriously taken grown up, but I’m no longer gonna be perceived as a child, as a girl.

But Ariana is on the red carpet donning her sweet, cute, teen dresses as if she was a doll with a ponytail and bow in her hair, or those stupid ears and then she goes on stage in her super sluty outfit and acts “oh, look at me, I’m so hot and grown up.” That’s what’s wrong about her. She is not stating I’m a woman. You are basically watching cute teen dress like a slut. She is not giving the vibe of a woman for it to be sexy and not uncomfortable for everyone to watch. She might be 20 something, but she is purposely trying to be the sexy schoolgirl that man fantasize to see in porn.

Selena (not my fav Disney either) looks childish as well, but at least she is not trying to appear as child.

  • Anya

I never liked the term “role model”. Says who, they are supposed to be role models? They can live and do whatever the heck they want.

So I don’t give a damn whether they are role models, the problem is she is as you say ridiculous and it’s sad to watch her to try so hard to be a “woman”. And whoever from her people is behind trying to promote her this way, should be fired and they should tell her to get rid of her ponaytail. She is constantly complaining that her hair is horrible from years of dying it. So cut it off and let new hair to grow, not like she would be a first celebrity recently to cut her hair. JLaw, Shailene, Miley, Emma and many more went for it and it worked for them.

  • LanaBs SweetTreats

I think she sounds like Kermit the frog! I can’t stand her! I don’t know whàt people see in her!!! I don’t understand a word out her mouth & that silly river dance she does!!! Please go away!!!!

  • Jasaga

Bette Midler said something quite specific about Ariana Grande and I think she nailed the situation pretty well. She may have used that remark and Ms. Grande metaphorically, as some commenters have suggested, but that doesn’t take away from the specifics. Ariana is talented and, except for making tons of money off of songs that are at best mediocre relative to her talent, seems to be horribly mismanaged, especially regarding her image. She will grow up and eventually use her talent more effectively, I presume. Bette got it right, meanwhile.

  • mm366

    Bravo Bette!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • SweenyTodd

Wholesome? Since when is broadcasting yourself half naked to young girls as a role model wholesome? There is a fine line between sexy and trashy? Your voice is supposed to be the highlight, not your raunchy display of humping a chair! Sheesh!

  • Sonyafun

I don’t think Ariana’s voice is silly as Bette said “silly high voice”. And there are many more women who look way worse than this young girl that are slithering around and more. It’s happened since Madonna and it’s just been getting worse. Young girl’s today are under a lot of pressure to give more than just their voice. It’s a shame but that’s what it has come to. I have a lot of respect for the women today who don’t sell sex along with their music.

  • Vy Nguyen

I don’t think you understood my remark. She appears to have this glam and yes “wholesome” apperance when you compare her to other female artists.

She performed on the same stage Charlie xcx fouled. Yet nobody really mentioned it because it was expected of Charlie. Like Taylor momsen, people rolled their eyes over her attempts to look promiscuous, yet when Miley does some thing similar people loose their mind over.

The point is these artists initially appealed to different markets. Miley and Ariana initial market is prepubescent girls, that’s why they’re expected to be wholesome. So their attempt to move on from that often receives a lot of shades, when in fact what they’re doing is only half indecent to what people are already exposed to.

That’s why I asked why target Ariana? It was a rhetorical question. Ariana and miley both have the same initial market but are in a transition to a new one. Inmagion if Iggy or rihana or Nicky started their career in some kids shows when they were early teens. They too would receive the exact same criticism.

She looks like a 14 year old girl. I guess they’re trying to appeal to the pedophile market.

  • Jasaga

I wasn’t actually replying just to your remark. I have to figure out how one makes a general response comment at some point, I suppose. But I am now replying directly to yours, which I do get and sincerely appreciate. Bette Midler never at anytime in her career looked like a tiny doll baby performing like a tramp. I don’t think her remark, in context, has anything to do with sexual portrayal in general. I think that if Ariana Grande had Better Midler for a manager her career would be enhanced. Bette pointed out that Ariana’s image, talent and public performance are incongruent. I think she’s right.

  • Nofy

Gimmicks and Props are used when there isn’t enough actual talent.

  • jasmine velazquez

who cares all this generation cares for is sexual image . have you not heard the radio ? what kind of image do you guys want her in a girl singing holding a lollipop shes old enough stop judging her

  • JC

….Because Rihanna, J-Lo, Beyonce are women who “”present themselves as women”"”

Hahahaha!!! Thanks for the good laugh!!

  • SweenyTodd

Not exactly. Miley and Ariana have gone to EXTREME measures to break their “mold”. I do not think it is necessary to go to such measures. They can still be stars, still be adults, still be sexy without being trashy and disgusting. Their “attempts” however, to move on have moved into being perverted, and blatantly …well.. disgusting. There is nothing wrong with people “losing their minds” over Miley’s public drug use or Ariana’s public belittlement of her staff and fans.

  • Jasaga

Ultimately, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, Lorde, Selena Gomez and others in that age group are doing what most of their ilk have done historically- they are growing up in public. Some do so differently than others. Judy Garland, leaps to mind as the grandmama of them all. Taylor Swift made it past her teen years alright, it seems.

Keep in mind that these youngsters never act alone. They have managers and bean counters shaking it all the way to the bank. They don’t call it “booty” for nothing. I’m sure the extremes will prevail as “selling” points for those who make their fortunes off the nubies. And when Ariana and Miley catch old, they will be replaced by the next crop.

As for the “Disney” syndrome, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera grew up that way as well. Pretty risque stuff that made them appear less than wholesome to the Disney generated audience. They’re doing alright now, too. Growing up in public has never been easy for the girls. So, when Ariana and Miley are no longer the latest young things out there for the droolers to voyeur by, they will have to resort to something other than post Diz rebellion to further their careers. Of course, the sooner the better for all involved. After all, as Lorde has remarked, “We’re on each others team.” Stay warm and visionary.
