Tom Hanks keeps close to his wife Rita Wilson as they arrive at the 2014 National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at President’s Park on Thursday evening (December 4) in Washington, DC.

The 58-year-old actor and Rita, 58, joined hundreds of people and President Barack Obama at the annual event held just steps from the White House.

“[The national tree] is a symbol of hope and holiday spirit,” Obama expressed during his speech (via ABC News). “As we hold our loved ones tight, let’s remember the military families whose loved ones are far from home. They are our heroes.”
