'Mockingjay' Continues to Soar During Slow Weekend Box Office
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 topped the box office for the third time in a row with $21.6 million!
According to THR, the third film of the franchise, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, and Josh Hutcherson, brought its domestic total to $257.7 million. It’s close to passing Captain America: The Winter Solider as the No. 2 title of the year in North America after Guardians of the Galaxy.
Staying in second place was Penguins of Madagascar, starring the voices of John Malkovich and Benedict Cumberbatch, which fell 56 percent to earn $11.1 million, for a domestic total of $49.6 million so far.
Rounding out the top five were the animated flick Big Hero 6 and the star-studded Interstellar, bringing in $8.1 million and $8 million, respectively.
Meanwhile, Wild, starring Reese Witherspoon, debuted to $630,000 from 21 theaters, for a location average of $30,000.
