See a Preview of Angelina Jolie's NBC Special for 'Unbroken'!

Angelina Jolie sits down for an interview with legendary news anchor Tom Brokaw during the Angelina Jolie: Unbroken special airing on NBC on Tuesday (December 9).

The 39-year-old actress was asked about directing the movie, a job that many people turned down as they thought it would be too tough.

“I was reminded of that thing that I think we all know but don’t often listen to, which is that if you really follow your true self and you do something for the right reasons and you give it your best, that that counts,” Angelina said. “And I didn’t know if I was the best director for this, the right director for this. I didn’t have the skill set going in to handle all of the things that it would take to make this film, but I was going to learn because I really, really cared, and that matters.”

Tune in for the special tomorrow night (December 9) at 10/9c on NBC!

FYI: Angie is wearing Dana Rebecca Designs earrings.

The preferential voting system supposed to prevent shameful and undeserving winners such as A Beautiful Mind, Braveheart, Crash happen

Who says A Beautiful Mind and Braveheart didn’t deserve to win? That’s YOUR opinion. Everyone agrees that Crash won because the vote that year because supposedly liberal HW wouldn’t vote for “the gay movie” and it had nothing to do with the voting system at that time. I’ve tried to watch Brokeback Mountain about 4 times. And each time I sleep through about half of it. It’s been 10 years and I still haven’t seen the entire movie. And if you look at the year Braveheart won the other films were Babe (a movie about a pig), Apollo 13, Il Postino (a foreign language movie) and Sense and Senibility. In retrospect – Braveheart IS the movie that stands out in that bunch, so it wasn’t a bad choice. The year A Beautiful Mind won the competition wasn’t really all that great and most folks thought The Lord In The Rings wasn’t a serious enough movie for the Academy. The competition just wasn’t that great – Gosford Park (what?), In The Bedroom (huh?), Lord of the boRings and Moulin Rouge! Aside from LOTR constantly being on TNT…A Beautiful Mind IS a better movie with better acting. A better example would have ben to say Shakespeare In Love or Chicago – two films that haven’t aged that well.

Unbroken Actor Recalls Meeting Angelina Jolie For the First Time: Kids Toys and a Trampoline

by Marc MalkinToday 8:00 AM PST

When Finn Wittrock met Angelina Jolie for the first time it was at her house to talk about him playing Mac in Unbroken.

“I remember waiting to meet her and I was sort of skittish, a little nervous and I had butterflies in my stomach, but in literally like 30 seconds, it was just all distilled and out the window,” the American Horror Story actor tells me. “She was just sort of talking to you just as a person. You know, I think we put her on a pedestal, but she didn’t build the pedestal. She’s on there with grace, but she talks to you just like a person.”

He added with a laugh, “She breaths. She’s warm-blooded.”

Wittrock actually auditioned for the lead role of Louis Zamperini.

“I got a call a few weeks later and Angelina wanted to meet at her house,” he said. “So I went to her house and saw the trampoline and the kids toys. She then talked to me about the part of Mac…Not like she had to talk me into it, but she had these poster boards of her research and sort of a look book that she had actually used to pitch Universal because she kind of had to audition for it herself. She had to fight [to direct the movie]. And then she was like, ‘I hope to see you starving on a raft in a few months.’”

Fast forward to the Australian set. Wittrock dropped to 129 pounds (he weighs 175 today) to play one of the three WW II airmen who were lost at sea after their plane crashed into the ocean.

His dad wasn’t too pleased by the weight loss. “He really didn’t like it,” Wittrock said. “He was really concerned by it because I think you spend your whole life trying to make sure your kid has enough to eat and then there was this. He was like, ‘Please, is this role done yet?’”

Unbroken has become an awards season favorite. Look for all sorts of nominations for Jolie’s directing, the film for best picture and stars Jack O’Connell and Miyavi for acting kudos.

“Angie is hands-on, she’s experimental, she wants to try it different ways,” Wittrock said. “She’s curious. She wants to know what you’re thinking. She’s eager for your thoughts and your input.”

He also said, “She was under a lot of pressure for this. She herself had something to prove. She didn’t have it all figured out. As sprawling and epic and big as it is, it’s a personal film for her.”

  • bap

The real men truly admire her!

I know. That’s why I emphasized that it was HER opinion that A Beautiful Mind and Braveheart were bad choices. Everybody and their dog knows why Crash won.

Angelina Jolie Dropped to Her Knees and ‘Prayed for a Miracle’ on ‘Unbroken’ Film Set After Taking Inspiration From Christian War Hero

Angelina Jolie, though not religious, discovered the ultimate power of prayer while on set of her forthcoming film “Unbroken,” thanks to her unlikely bond with a WWII hero and devout Christian.

Louis Zamperini, who died of pneumonia at age 97 on July 2, was the Olympian runner and prisoner of war survivor who inspired Jolie’s latest directorial debut. The film is a war drama based on the best-selling bookUnbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption.

The born-again Christian’s incredible bond with the 39-year-old Academy award-winning actress not only led her to create a film about his remarkable life journey, but ultimately would also propel her closer to faith.

While directing one particular scene in New South Whales, Australia, Jolie found herself in desperate need of a miracle.

“She was not a person of faith and had never prayed before but she found herself at the very last scene of the movie … they needed sunlight to shoot this very important scene and there had been a storm that had been going for a while,” Zamperini’s daughter Cynthia Garris said at a press conference in New York on Friday.

“[Angelina] said ‘I don’t know what I’m going to do so I’ll do what Louie would do.’ She got on her knees and she prayed for a miracle … everybody saw it,” she recalled. “It stopped raining. The sun came out, a rainbow came out, she said, ‘let’s get this take’ [and] they shot the take. When she said ‘cut,’ it started to rain again.”

The extraordinary moment, according to Garris, was a testament to her late father’s faith and the ability of his compelling story to impact even the most irreligious people.

“She was moved by my father’s faith to try that and that’s what he wants for people to get from the movie,” Garris explained. “I’ll tell you, when my father died we were all with him in the hospital. [Angelina] came about 45 minutes later and she was pointing above saying ‘I know he’s with us, I know he’s there with God.’ I think maybe in God’s plan for Angelina, she was supposed to find Louie and make this movie to find her way to a life that would encompass the Almighty.”

Zamperini survived a number of horrendous ordeals throughout his life, including living across the Pacific in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash. He also endured unspeakable torture at the hands of the Japanese navy after being sent to a P.O.W. camp.

It was after reluctantly attending a crusade led by evangelist Billy Graham in 1949 that Zamperini began his Christian walk and through his faith, he was able to forgive his captors and later overcome his struggles, including PTSD.

Jolie recently spoke about her decision not to delve deeply into Zamperini’s Christian faith walk in the film. She explained that it was the war hero himself who requested that the faith theme be “universal” in a bid to appeal to a broad audience.

“We made it universal, not specific to one faith, and that was something that was agreed upon with Louie,” Jolie said. “He said he wanted the message to reach everyone. He said to make faith and forgiveness universal … he said this is about reaching everyone and this should speak to everyone … If you were looking for symbolism and miracles in the film you will see them.”

Zamperini’s children attested to Jolie’s statement and applauded the Hollywood filmmaker’s cautious retelling of their late father’s story.

“We’re very happy with it,” said Garris, with her brother Luke Zamperini adding, “I absolutely love this film!”

“Unbroken” hits theaters across the U.S. on Christmas day.

“Unbroken” actor Finn Wittrock says Brangelina is the real deal. “I remember the day that Brad came (to the set) with the kids. She stopped everything and jumped into his arms, and he swung her around and everyone was like, ‘It’s real!’ ” he said at a luncheon for the film. Jolie wasn’t worried about her 6-year-old daughter,Vivienne, seeing actors in gruesome makeup while shooting the war film. Finn said, “Angie was like, ‘Yeah, she knows it’s fake. She’s seen way worse than this. She’s grown up on movie sets.”
