Angelina Jolie Thinks Even Her Younger Kids Can Handle 'Unbroken'

Angelina Jolie signs autographs for fans while outside the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts on Monday evening (December 8) in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Recently, the 39-year-old actress revealed whether or not she was going to let her kids see her upcoming movie Unbroken.

“It’s PG-13,” Angelina told E! News. “My boys — one is 13, one is 11 but he’s a mature 11 — will see it, but I think I might actually show my younger children.”

She continued, saying: “I think they could handle it because they understand film. They know the difference of what is real and what isn’t, because it’s heavy for [kids] under 13. But they all knew Louis [Zamperini]. They want to see it because it’s Louis.”

Like Louie Zamperini’s Survival, ‘Unbroken’ Film Took Years of Patience, Endurance

New York, NY — You name it, Louis “Louie” Zamperini went through it. After living through the Great Depression, this World War Two hero survived a plane crash, drifted on a life raft for 47 days, suffered at the hands of cruel Japanese guards in POW camps, all the while battling starvation, dysentery, and other physical ailments. His never ending ordeal lasted more than two years. Miraculously, he lived to tell about it. His story is captivatingly depicted in Laura Hillenbrand’s New York Times bestseller “Unbroken,” which hit book shelves in 2010. I know what you’re thinking: Isn’t this the perfect plot for a feature film? Well, it seemed to be well on its way to becoming one in 1957, when Universal bought the rights to Zamperini’s story. Just like Zamperini’s amazing survival, however, it took years of endurance for this project to finally see a green light. For a long time, his tale had been tossed around by different directorial hands, with no one willing to commit.

    In came Angelina Jolie.

At an “Unbroken” press conference in New York on Friday, Jolie explained why she felt so passionately about directing this movie.

“I was halfway through this book and I found myself inspired and feeling better and being reminded of the strength of the human spirit. And the strength of having a brother like Pete and to be that for each other. And I realized, if this is having this effect on me, I knew it had affected so many other people and it was what we needed to put forward to the world at this time. And I’m glad it’s coming out at the holidays, it’s a very important time.”

Zamperini’s daughter, Cynthia Garris, told Townhall why Jolie was the perfect person to bring her dad’s almost unbelievable experience to the silver screen. Although Garris was hesitant at first to put her dad’s story in the hands of a movie star, she said the film’s producer, Matt Baer, put her at ease.

“Matt said, ‘I haven’t spoken to one other director who had the vision that she has. She is brilliant beyond words and her passion.’ So, his being convinced, since he had been on the film for so many years, trying so hard to get it done, he convinced me.”

Finn Wittrock, who portrays Francis “Mac” McNamara, Louie’s fellow airmen who survived the plane but died after a few weeks of languishing in the life raft, explained why he and the cast felt a responsibility to do the story justice.

“He could be any of our grandfathers and I think we all felt a responsibility and that we did service to a story that is bigger than any of us. So, we had to remind ourselves when we were in the trenches, and have four blueberries for breakfast, you push yourself because you want the story to be told.”

The cast certainly took their jobs seriously, keeping to a strict 800-calorie a day diet so they could accurately reflect the emaciated bodies of these POW prisoners. Jack O’Connell, who plays Zamperini, said his costar Domnhall Gleason (Phil) lost so much weight that he dropped a contact lens size.

Jolie’s commitment to the film is emphasized with details like these that she insisted on getting right. In addition to the cast’s weight, Jolie even ensured that the track outfits in the film were the same colors of Zamperini’s 1935 high school track team.

After the 57-year-long wait for a film that needed to be made, Jolie hopes she captures the spirit of Louie Zamperini.

“I want my children to know about men like Louie. When they feel bad about themselves and they think all is lost, they know they’ve got something inside of them. You don’t have to be a perfect person or a saint or a hero – Louie was very flawed, very human – but made great choices and again, was a great man.”

An uplifting side note: I asked Jolie after the presser if Zamperini had seen any rough cuts of the film before he died, and she said he saw the whole thing.

“Unbroken” opens nationwide on Christmas Day. Keep an eye out Tuesday for my full interview with Mrs. Garris as she shares more insight into her dad’s amazing story.

Angelina Jolie goes above and beyond for her fans… as she jumps over a bush to give out autographs in LA
Just days ago she comforted a distressed female fan by wiping away her tears and even taking a selfie with her.
But the Angelina Jolie good will tour still seems to be going on as she went above and beyond for her followers once again.
The 39-year-old actress made it a point to meet with and sign autographs for fans patiently waiting outside a screening of her film Unbroken in Beverly Hills, California on Monday evening.
    Scroll down for video
Angelina made sure to make many of her devotees happy shortly after she stepped out of the event held at the Wallis Annenberg Hall as she even jumped over a bush to greet them.
The Maleficent star presented with several magazine covers, movie posters and DVD cases to put her signature on.
The wife of Brad Pitt was even happy to take selfies with a few of her lucky admirers shortly after the star left the screening and party.
As usual, Angelina looked chic as she donned an entirely black ensemble including jacket, sheer blouse, trousers and leather pumps.
She had natural, complimentary make-up on her face as she wore her brunette locks down flowing over her shoulders.
Even as she made her way toward her vehicle after the impromptu meet-and-greet, she made sure her fans felt appreciated as she bid them adieu with a friendly wave.
The mother-of-six has made quite a habit out of interacting with her supporters while promoting her upcoming flick as she was greeted by a similar mob while arriving for an appearance on The Daily Show in New York City on Thursday.

On that day she revealed her caring nature yet again when she comforted a distressed female fan who’d been pulled from the crowd, bending down beside her to wipe away her tears.
Angelina, kneeled on the floor to get eye-level with her fan, named Techna, who had experienced a panic attack.
Not minding to dirty her black satin-sided trousers, the Mr. & Mrs. Smith actress consoled the woman, who goes by the handle @TechnaDeschanel on her social media, before posing with her for a couple of photos.

On her Instagram, Techna explained: ‘Then the guards added another baracade (sic). Chaos erupted to the point. (sic) I was getting squished to the point that I started to have a panic attack.’(sic)
She continued: ‘She saw me struggling to the point that the security pull (sic) me out and sat down (sic). Angelina didnt leave till she made sure I was ok (sic)’
Angelina was at the helm of Unbroken, which chronicles the true -to-life story of Louis Zamperini who was an Olympic runner taken prisoner by Japenese Forces during World War II. The film is set for US release on Christmas Day.

I posted in a earlier thread about these shoes but now a shoe website/blog has it on their site…

Angelina Jolie Takes Selfies with Fans While Wearing Saint Laurent Pumps
Here’s Angelina Jolie, pausing to comfort/take selfies of healing with an overwhelmed fan outside of The Daily Show studios in NYC. Her humanitarian reflexes just won’t quit. Angelina just happens to be wearing a beautiful pair of black suede Saint Laurent Paris d’Orsay Pumps while performing her requisite daily random acts of charity, a factoid which most other media outlets will probably fail to mention. You can currently find these exact Saint Laurents for $645 at Nordstrom.

Angelina is very particular about her designer wares. She does not seem to own a single Chanel bag, which makes her an extreme rarity amongst A-list celebs. In the last year, we’ve only seen her carrying the latest bags from Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton. Angelina doesn’t have her own edition of “The Many Shoes of…” just yet, but you can browse through her carefully curated handbag collection in “The Many Bags of Angelina Jolie” on PurseBlog.

Just bringing over my posts from previous thread.

    * Besides the intelligent response that AJ give to every question addressed to her during interviews, what’s noticeable about her is her VOICE. I love listening to her SOOTHING voice. She is also FIRM & CERTAIN to her answers. The quality of her voice is just lovely to hear. She has this DISTINCT QUALITY that I never get tired listening to her interviews. Her TONE or RANGE or PITCH or whatever you call it is just LIKEABLE & very CHARMING. Not annoying. No stammering. No stuttering. No unnecessary expressions. Just enough. Very natural. And you can sense that this person really has something between her ears. Quick-witted even. It would be very embarrassing to ask her any stupid questions or to waste the time allotted for any interviewer to ask her just any question that comes to mind. If I were assigned to interview her, I would surely prepare a set of questions that would interest her.
*AJ is sooooo busy nowadays (not complaining though) BUT I am sure after Unbroken obligations & BP’s Fury/ Selma too, they will take a break with their family especially having Mommy-Daddy time. Maybe AJBP will finally have their long-delayed honest-to-goodness honeymoon…. away from work….away from anything…. just the two of them, savoring their love. I think I have an idea where they are going. Somewhere they have not explored or went to.

Production Notes of “Unbroken”. Very interesting read.

    cr jp family

a junket interview, someone asked Angie why she could shoot such a
convincing flight sequence. Of course she has a very good advisor in Bob
Livingstone, an expert in period flying/planes. Angie in the interview
graciously thanked all the crew and all the different parts of the
project that made it successful. But, she’s humble enough not to remind
the interviewer that she’s a pilot herself.

Actually, if you read the production note. She’s not only a private pilot, but a pilot with an instrument rating.

    What is an instrument rating?

rating refers to the qualifications that a pilot must have in order to
fly under IFR (Instrument Flight Rules). It requires additional training
and instruction beyond what is required for a Private Pilot certificate
or Commercial Pilot certificate, including rules and procedures
specific to instrument flying, additional instruction in meteorology,
and more intensive training in flight solely by reference to
instruments.[1] Testing consists of a written exam and a practical test
(known more commonly as the check ride). The check ride is divided into
an oral component to verify that the applicant understands the theory of
instrument flying and an actual flight to ensure the pilot possesses
the practical skills required for safe IFR flight.

At the ‘Unbroken’ premiere, there’s no Angelina but Tom Brokaw’s still a fan

By Helena Andrews December 9 at 8:55 AM

Brokaw greeting Comcast CEO Brian Roberts at the ‘Unbroken’ film
premiere in Washington, Dec. 8, 2014 (Photographer Dan Swartz)

can all agree that Washington has come a long way on the red carpet
circuit. Matthew McConaughey was here! Isn’t that Anne Hathaway?
Hey, Brad (no last name necessary)!

    But don’t invest in fancy
binoculars–all the better to see the big stars with, my dear–just yet.
Because in a red carpet show down between the Los Angeles premiere
versus the D.C. premiere of a major flick, L.A. wins every time.

Case in point: Mrs. No Last Name Necessary.

night was the official Washington opening of director Angelina
Jolie-Pitt’s “Unbroken,” the true story of Olympic athlete-turned-World
War II POW Louis Zamperini. It was also the night of the Los Angeles
premiere. We’ll give you one guess where Angie was.

    So the crowd
of cable network executives, media types, and Hill folks got to nibble
on their spinach dip without the crippling fear of an Angelina sighting.
Still, we wanted to know why Washington has popped up on Hollywood
    radar at all.

David L. Cohen, executive vice president of the
Comcast Corporation. which owns NBCUniversal, told us that the studio
likes to bring films “that are issues based and movies that are more
serious” to this town filled with smarties.

    “The studio’s gonna
hate me for this,” joked Cohen, “but we didn’t bring ‘Dumb and Dumber
To’ to Washington–maybe we were afraid that people would think we were
    trying to send a message.”

Hot off of his Presidential Medal of
Freedom win, NBC’s Tom Brokaw introduced the film by telling the story
of his retirement from the “Nightly News” anchor chair.

    “I don’t
have to jump on that overnight plane to Iraq anymore,” said Brokaw. “I
have a much tougher assignment now: Hanging out with Angelina Jolie
24/7.” The veteran newsman, whose interview with Jolie airs Tuesday
night, admitted that he’d “joined her fan club as a charter member.” So
even with Angie’s not there, she is.
