    Brad Pitt accepted the Visionary Award on behalf of his Plan B colleagues, first paying tribute to presenter Norman Lear. “When I was a kid, television for me, my parents, was still a relatively new invention. We would watch Reggie Sanford, Archie Bunker… this became part of my upbringing. Week after week, my life was affected by Norman Lear. I can’t quantify how that affected my worldview, my political views, but growing up in the bible bet – the buckle of the bible belt – it was powerful. I can’t thank [Lear] enough”.

    His thanks to the guild were more understated. “Thank you for honoring our little garage band tonight,” Pitt said, adding tributes to the employees and partners who have worked on Plan B productions.

    Matt Bomer, hot off a Golden Globe, accepts for THE NORMAL HEART. (Kinda odd, as Ryan Murphy is in the house.)
    Sharon Stone, smoking as ever, presents THE NORMAL HEART with its Stanley Kramer Award, which took years to get made

    Per Deadline and THR

    Sharon Stone, AIDs activist introduced the Stanley Kramer award for HBO’s The Normal Heart. It’s the first time a TV movie has been honored with the award.

    “Stanley Kramer shined a bright white light on prejudice, its victims and perpetrators…The Normal Heart started out as a loud and angry play chronicling those struggling with AIDs. It was written by Oscar nominee Larry Kramer and it proved daunting to be made into a movie. It languished for three decades until Ryan Murphy took it to HBO.” Matt Bomer, who just won a Golden Globe for his performance, is accepting the award.

    Bomer after reading The Normal Heart: “I was upset, angry, informed and changed. And that’s how anyone feels after feeling The Normal Heart.”.

    “Larry and Stanley Kramer used storytelling to change minds..they reminded us of the fundamental aspects we owe each other as human beings. Even in times of societal darkness and fear, Larry and Stanley used art to promote justice and understanding.”

    Karen Sharpe Kramer, widow of Stanley Kramer, on why she selected Normal Heart this year. She told Deadline, “I don’t think it got its due at the Emmys. We are a
    little complacent about AIDS today
    because we think we have it under control. That’s not true. It’s about
    education…the film is such a classic. It had to be recognized as the standard of the subject, it educates people on the early days of the AIDS crisis.”

    2015 PGA Winners: ‘Birdman’ Steals ‘Boyhood”s Awards Season Thunder

    Held at the Hyatt Regency in Century City, the 2015 PGA Awards offered an un-televised evening of freely flowing cocktails, off-the-cuff and often indulgent speeches, and little in the way of surprises. Except for one, for some, unexpected winner.

    “Boyhood” may not be as unstoppable as we once thought. In a surprising coup, “Birdman” took home the Best Picture equivalent, leaving Richard Linklater’s expected frontrunner empty-handed. Producers, however, are but one contingent of Academy voters. Tomorrow’s SAG Awards, where “Boyhood” is a leading contender for Best Ensemble, will tell us more. At nine Oscar nods versus “Boyhood”‘s six, “Birdman” had more noms in tech categories and therefore was more producer-friendly than Linklater’s indie labor-of-love.

    Oscar-snubbed “Life Itself” took home the Documentary award, with Chaz Ebert and director Steve James onstage to accept the prize. “I’ve been a member of the Academy several years now. I think I want to join the PGA,” said James as he accepted the award. “I just love that you gave us this award tonight” added Ebert, whose late husband is the subject of the celebrated doc. (Fun fact: Oscar frontrunner “Citizenfour,” which all but has it in the bag, did not receive a PGA nomination.) Also Oscar-snubbed was PGA animated feature winner “The Lego Movie,” which also picked up a Critics’ Choice Award last week.

    Guilders also went for TV drama winner “Breaking Bad,” signifying the end of the late AMC series’ long-running awards tether. “I’m sure that you’re all so surprised that we are still here,” said co-producer and star Bryan Cranston, who accepted the award on behalf of no-show Vince Gilligan.

    The highlight of the evening was the Visionary Award presentation to Brad Pitt, Jeremy Kleiner and Dede Gardner’s Plan B, the intrepid indie production company behind “Selma” and last year’s PGA winner “12 Years a Slave.” The quote of the night goes to Pitt, fresh off the plane from Sundance where he’d been hawking fest buzz title “True Story”: “If anyone out there can tell us how to make a visionary film and not cut our price, that’d be great.”

    Luke Treadaway: the day Angelina Jolie asked me over for tea
    ===============================================
    Luke Treadaway on his film role as a PoW in Jolie’s Unbroken, starring in TV’s new Arctic thriller Fortitude, and saying no to rotten shark meat.

    He has chalked up notable appearances in all manner of film genres, including most recently Unbroken, the wartime biopic directed by Angelina Jolie in which he appears as a malnourished inmate at a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp.

    Jolie had contacted Treadaway out of the blue and asked him over for a cup of tea to discuss a film she was directing. A car picked him up and deposited him at her hotel outside London. “We had a chat, she gave me loads of photographs of the men in the camps and a Life magazine from 1940.” A couple of days later, confirmation came through that he had got the role. “I ran lots and ate not lots and went and shot it,” he says of the preparation. Jolie is, he says “hard-working… I think she’s remarkable.”

    Angelina Jolie in Kurdistan
    =====================
    ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Hollywood superstar and UN refugee envoy Angelina Jolie is in the Kurdistan Region to visit refugee camps.

    Jolie, who arrived on an unannounced visit Saturday evening, was expected to visit a refugee camp in Duhok province that houses tens of thousands of Yezidis and other refugees from Mosul.

    Rudaw also learned that she will give a press conference today following her visit to the camp.

    The Kurdistan Region is home to 1.6 million refugees from Syrian Kurdistan and the rest of Iraq, most of whom fled the Islamic State (ISIS) onslaught last summer.

    The American actress was appointed a Special Envoy in 2012 by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

    This is Jolie’s second visit to the Kurdistan Region. In September 2012 Jolie visited the Domiz refugee camp in Erbil and met with Kurdish officials, including Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani.

    According to the UNHCR, Jolie has conducted “more than 40 field visits around the world, becoming well-versed in the phenomenon of forced displacement and a tireless advocate on their behalf.”
