John Wick – This action packed movie shows you exactly what happens when you break the single cardinal rule where you don’t kill a puppy in Hollywood. Yup, that’s right – the movie follows a former hit man, played by the immortal Keanu Reeves, who goes on a revenge rampage because a couple of well-connected hooligans kill his dog. The premise of the movie sounds silly on the surface, but the action that is jam-packed in this film is nothing short of amazing. In fact, the action is so entertaining, you forget about sad Keanu entirely and remember the Keanu of the Matrix and Speed days. As expected, the movie proudly wears a rated-R badge due to its violent content and being the movie with the highest body count of 2014.
The Best of Me – If you like Nicholas Sparks, this movie is for you. This love story puts eye candy actors James Marsden and Michelle Monaghan together in a movie about a pair of former high school sweethearts who are reunited when they both visit their small hometown. In case you missed it, Just Jared got a clip of an alternate ending from the film – definitely check it out here, after you catch the film.
In the animated world, there are 3 exciting additions to the Studio Ghibli/Disney family.
Porco Rosso – Directed by Totoro‘s Hayao Miyazaki, this adapted Japanese animated film features a valiant World War I pilot, played by Birdman‘s Michael Keaton, whose face is transformed into a pig’s face due to a mysterious spell. Through this adventure, Porco has a run in with some sky pirates, falls in love with a beautiful girl named Gina, and picks up some good friends along the way.
Pom Poko – Another animated film but tells the ever present story of nature vs the modern civilized world. This film follows a hilarious and adorable raccoon community that is forced from their homes due to rapid development and the construction of a new shopping center. As the band of raccoons struggle to make ends meet, they decide to fight back! Using a little bit of ancient magic, they transform themselves into humans (if you ever watch any Studio Ghibli film – you’ll note the weirder things are, the more normal it seems). Be warned though – this film may not be appropriate for everybody in the family as there are some glimpses of nudity and some morbid deaths in the film, however, it moves briskly enough to not distract from the story. To note, the English dubbing on this film was right on and very enjoyable.
Tales From Earthsea – And finally, rounding out the notable animated films is Goro Miyazaki‘s Tales from Earthsea. Featuring notable voices of Timothy Dalton, Willem Dafoe, Cheech Marin and Mariska Hargitay, the film follows the mythical land of Earthsea where dragons have returned while humanity is falling into chaos. A wizard, named Lord Archmage Sparrowhawk, and a young prince named Arren, go out on a mission to find the cause of this chaos that threatens to destroy their world. Along the way they run into slavers, find a love interest, and a ton of adventure – in addition, like all Studio Ghibli films this movie is absolutely stunning visually. This film is a very loose interpretation of Ursula Le Guiin’s Earthsea series and is directed by Haya Miyazaki‘s son, Goro Miyazaki.
