John Legend Speaks Out on Kanye West's Beck Interruption

While John Legend previously spoke out to say he considered Kanye West‘s interruption of Beck‘s Grammys acceptance speech to be “funny,” he is clarifying the comments in a new statement.

“I thought it was funny,” the 36-year-old “Glory” singer originally said. “I looked at it as just a funny thing that people were going to talk about. It didn’t hurt anybody. Anybody who’s upset just needs to relax. It was funny.”

John is now speaking out again to clarify those comments.

“I want to clarify my thoughts on Kanye‘s actions at the Grammys on Sunday,” John told Us Weekly. “First of all, Kanye is my friend. He believed in me years ago when very few did, and I wouldn’t be here without his support. That doesn’t mean we’ll agree on everything, but it does mean that I am grateful to him. And I also believe he is one of the most gifted people I’ve had the privilege of working with.”

“In my [original] comments to Us,” he continued. “I said that when Kanye walked up on stage, mimicking his interruption of Taylor Swift‘s VMA acceptance speech, then turned around as if he was just playing, most of the room, including me, saw this as funny, as a way of taking the piss out of himself for his infamous behavior several years ago.”

“When I said that was funny and people should lighten up about it, that’s what I meant,” John added. “I wasn’t referring to Kanye‘s comments after the show, which I have now seen and heard. I disagree with those comments.”

Beck is indeed a true artist’s artist. He’s a multi-instrumentalist, a creative and unique singer-songwriter whose music I have bought and enjoyed over the years,” John continued. “While his win may have been a surprise to many, it’s not because he’s not a great artist deserving of recognition. All of the other nominated artists, including Beyonce, are incredible in their own right, and arguments could be made for any of them deserving to win.”

“This is not an objective process. It’s completely subjective, in fact. We can all debate who we thought should have won. But even if you didn’t vote for him, plenty of our colleagues in the music business did. These voters are all creators who love music and have dedicated their lives to it, and the plurality of them chose Beck as the Album of the Year. I respect their decision and congratulate Beck on this outstanding accomplishment.”

i know you wanted to give your opinion John, but it would have been better to remain silent

  • Barry

Stay away from him John. He’s an angry man.

  • SquidBillie

Funny? It was disrespectful. If Beck did that to Legend or West, they’d be calling him a racist.

  • Utope

Really John? How about next time you win a Grammy or another major award, some jack-ass comes on stage and rants and raves how you should give your award away and how you don’t deserve it. You are laughing, I can guarantee that neither Taylor Swift nor Beck were laughing. It’s disgusting that people are defending Kanye. Had someone done that to Kanye, you would have heard a huge outcry from people like John Legend. It’s disgusting behavior!

  • onehunnit

John Legend if you don’t want to ruin your credibility in the future stop hanging with Kim Kardashian. She’s the reason you’re in this mess with that Beck diss selfie pic. Next time tell her not to post shit without your approval

  • millerz

john stop hanging out with trash……. nothing or noone can make kanye look like less of a douche! I think he’s used to his crazy wife running her mouth and saying obnoxious completely inappropriate things. She’s definitely lowered his standards for sure.

BUT i’m still a fan John is incredibly talented

  • Spokane

No matter how you look at it John, it was disgusting behavior. Kanye had no right to take away Beck’s accomplishment. It was disrespectful and unnecessary on a night when it should have been celebrating. Stop excusing Kanye’s bad behavior.

  • HOP

JOHN STAY AWAY FROM WEST AND KARDASHIAN THEY WILL RUIN YOUR CREDIBILITY.

  • susan

Kanye is nothing. Beck didn’t deserve that.

  • smmy33

So pathetic ..I think the public is getting sick & tired of certain people’s sense of entitlement and disrespect towards others while always demanding it for themselves.

John Legend is up for a Oscar for Glory .. If he wins would love for someone to shit on his acceptance speech , make it all about them and one big joke , while all the celebrities in the audience laugh like it’s that funniest shit every seen..

With John Legend put in position of standing there like a bystander while some loonie takes over the stage and what should I have been a triumph moment in his life reduced to a stunt and then to be put in the position of defending being awarded in the first .

Doubt he would be as classly and gracious as Beck .
    Or think it was funny.

  • Melissa B

How is someone like this friends w Kanye? He seems classy and caring. WTF?

  • jane

as stupid as his wife i see

  • jane

classy? you’ve seen his wife, right? one step above trailer trash

  • Brenda

I’m glad you clarified that John, I thought like u at first that KAnye was joking. Kanye hasn’t changed at all…still a self centered jerk

  • Sandra99

Kanye still has a hard on for Beyonce. He shows it every time he defends her. He should be banned from the awards shows

  • Tracy McMillan

Sorry Jane, I disagree. He is one step BELOW trailer trash.

  • Mike1288

Why does he feel the need to defend the guy when he was wrong? Kanye is trash regardless of the initial part he thought was a joke Kanye was drawing attention from Beck. He had no class from the spot. And did he see the tirade? Even Kim Kardashian was smart enough to be like shut up. The look on her face was priceless. It was like she just realized the crazy she married.

  • Christian

i dont think he realizes that it turned out kanye really wasnt joking, that he walked up to interrupt the show in order to say something dumb, but at the very last second he changed his mind. he wasnt referencing or poking fun at his past behavior, as some thought at the time. due to this fact we cannot give him a pass for that interruption. even if it were a joke i dont think it was appropriate. beck will always remember that moment as a kanye moment instead of a musical achievement. beck seems to be incredibly nice and humble, too nice to ever say what he really thinks about it

  • Christian

her sister said the most ignorant thing of the year when she told him to keep defending creativity and that music needs him to do that…or whatever she said

  • Christian

i have a feeling someone will eventually give him a taste of his own medicine…

  • smokeskater

Y’all mad; it was a joke and Beck thought it was funny! Get over it and stop being so sensitive as some of you would say if a white comedian said or did an offensive thing to a person of color and would demand and deny their reasons of being offended. Now that it’s the other way around, though generated in a different way, people want to be mad? PLEASE…Spare me your sympathies and empathies. Kanye’s comment after the show was his opinion, and you have the right to disagree with it, as well as he having the right to speak it. Yet, here again, when someone of another skin tone speaks on a topic, offering a differing opinion on a subject that might upset others and cause them to say the things you’re telling Kanye to do like: shut up, stop speaking and etc, will contradict themselves and be indifferent to others’ offense by shouting: FREEDOM of SPEECH! Can’t take the heat you all dish out all the time?

  • G Erik Enander

I bought and listened to Beck’s winning album today. It’s beautiful, calm, peaceful, thoughtful and thought-provoking. Beck uses actual instruments and lyrics that would do well in lyric poetry anthologies. No hate. No anger. No over-hyped sexuality. Just 47 minutes that take the soul on a journey. Beck’s album is simple and complex at the same time, and judges the listener more than the listener judges it, for if a person cannot comprehend its quality, then that person is deficient in musical understanding.

Kanye has the right to say what he wishes–freedom of speech–but I and others have the right to express regret that someone so prominent demonstrated, again, that money buys neither wisdom nor manners. I can only hope that Kanye’s humanity will grow to match his prominence.

  • sara winston

Kanye needs to be banned from awards shows. Enough with stupid face. Kim is pathetic. When is she going to go away?

  • 55vineyard

Um, last time I looked John Legend was a great looking black guy who changed his mind after listening to Kanye’s comments after the awards. Calling racism on John L?

  • Eduardo

Did you guys really read whole the statement? He’s not defending Kanye, he thought it was funny, UNTIL he saw the comments that Kanye said after the show. Please read the whole piece.

  • VanityInsecurity

Who you hang with is a direct reflection on who you are.. words my mom told me when I was younger & they still hold true. #Trash

  • Blah!

I’m not a fan, but this new statement isn’t so bad.

  • Chris Palmer

    Insufferable coon.

  • Marcy Cavanaugh Davies

    John Legend = class act.

    Kanye = take notes.

  • Marcy Cavanaugh Davies

By the way – I DO kinda think Kanye was joking, but then he realized he’d “generate” more “publicity” for himself if he talked some shit. So he did. Cause now instead of laughing off “Kanye’s joke,” here we all are — again — talking about what an a-hole he is.

Shame he thrives on negative attention, but attention is attention afterall.

I was never a fan of Beck’s music (so far?), but I can appreciate a man with style … musician or not. And for that – I will go buy his album, listen to it, and like it. Good for him. Congrats, Beck.

  • louflo

So glad that John Legend stepped up and clarified his previous comments. I was starting to lose respect for John Legend and was questioning whether his music is worth spending my hard earned money.I can appreciate his loyalty to Kanye but sometimes blind and / or unquestioning loyalty makes one just as guilty as the culprit.
    Mean people suck.

  • allan wood

I can’t believe people take these awards and their associated gossip so seriously.

  • Allen Lingenfelter

West is a great big fucking no talent loser. He always has to make everything about him. He is as bad as his skank hoe wife.

  • sandra conners

Did he suddenly realize his actions could cause problems in his own career??? Nice try, but you were in on this display of disrespect towards Beck. ALL of you thought it was acceptable for West to cause yet another Grammy moment. Beck deserved his win & that’s the bottom line. All the troublemakers should be seated in the back row with attendants watching their every move or better yet, banned completely.
(“Taking the piss” hahaha I didn’t realize John Legend was British?”)

  • sandra conners

I would pay to see that

  • sandra conners

    yawn……………..

  • lucy__luz

Whatever Legend!! With your new statements, you’re just making your so called friend kanye the crazy cry! Be prepared if kanye the crazy will call you a traitor!! hahahaha!!

  • lucy__luz

…and we thought that your “i thought it was funny” comment is still deep inside you. … bullies!

  • Charlie

And that is why civilized people refer to you as an ignorant monkey because you are too dumb to know when your monkey friend is making an ass of himself, go back to the jungle if you want to act like that!!

  • lucy__luz

the grammy’s was on feb.. 8 ,….. and we are feb. 11 now…. thinking tooooooooo much about it john? too lkate! lol

  • Maria E. Segura

This is exactly like and old saying He who walks with wolves they will learn to howl.

  • onehunnit

I know right? Khloe told him he should have said something wtf? Bitch if you’re sister was not married to Kanye none of your family would ever be invited to the Grammys.

  • Jay

How is it even remotely funny? What he did to Taylor Swift was incredibly disrespectful. Rude and arrogant. Now years later he goes up and celebrates his historical actions as if it’s some kind of joke. Hey Kanye, Beyonce’s married stop hitting on Jay Z’s wife, I think he can stand up for her himself. Real artist? lol this coming from the Auto Tune King!

  • Dory Phore

Did you read John’s statement? He had thought (like everyone else) Kanye’s on-stage presence was meant to mock the infamous Taylor Swift one–in other words, it was not meant to be serious.

Also, read the rest of the paragraph where he states he’s a fan of Beck and does not agree with what Kanye said about Beck.

  • Dory Phore

Civilized people–clearly you are NOT part of this group. Your group is VERMIN.

  • Utope

I was speaking about his original comments. Of course he’s back-tracking now, because everyone is outraged at this horrible behavior and those that were laughing about it. It wasn’t funny, you don’t humiliate an artist who won an award like htat.

  • T. Copps

I like john Legend and I am glad he back peddled on his first statement. It is fine to be friends, but not hen that friend behaves like an idiot. and Idiot is what Kanye was.

  • smokeskater

    close your mouth sandra…

  • stoplyin7722

Even if Kanye made no comments after, his behavior was horrible. He had No business on that stage trying to take over Beck’s moment. If Legend thought that was funny, then he is pathetic.

    Standards are sinking so low…

  • stoplyin7722

You’re right that Kanye can say whatever he wants AFTER the show, but during the show he needs to keep his LOSER self off the stage, away from the winners.
