Dakota Johnson on Charlie Hunnam's 'Fifty Shades of Grey' Exit: It Was a 'Confusing Moment' (Video)

Dakota Johnson and Julianne Moore sit front row together at the Boss Womens fashion show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2015 on Wednesday (February 18) in New York City.

The two ladies were joined by many guests including Vogue’s Anna Wintour.

The evening before, Dakota appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, where she talked about recasting the role of Christian Grey after Charlie Hunnam left the project.

“That was a confusing moment,” Dakota said. “I think his schedule conflicted. He was busy.”

“The first few auditions, I did a monologue from Persona which was really random but kinda the same vibe and the rest of it was just reading with a lot of really handsome men,” Dakota said. “Then once I got the role [and] then it was another month to find Jamie…It turned out okay.”

Well Dakota some talented actors chose quality over easy popularity…for those actors acting has meaning…and it’s not important how much they gain. Hunnam left 50 shades because was filming the final season of SOA and was going to film Crimson Peak a couple of months later…but most importantly he didn’t like how 50 shades was being developed. Yeah your movie made so much money but is cheap!

  • Krl l

Dakota you sound so annoying and dumb in this interview, you should show a little more respect to Charlie, especially considering how supportive he has been of everyone in fsog, so why don’t you stop mocking him and be a little more professional.
Just because you are a fame seeker doesn’t mean he is.

  • SkinnyFat

Shut up Dakota. Charlie dropped out of the movie because of his schedule and he has been nothing but gracious about the whole thing. Disrespecting him makes you look bad. The movie didn’t make all that money because you are in it so,don’t let it go to your head. Stupid starlet. As for Letterman, Charlie’s schedule is full.

  • SkinnyFat

Charlie isn’t a fame seeker and lives a very private life. He cares about the quality of his work. had he been in the movie, no one would be talking about you Dakota.

  • https://twitter.com/thedreadofpenny Penny Dreadful

Why are people STILL f*cking talking about this????

  • https://twitter.com/thedreadofpenny Penny Dreadful

I don’t think anyone believes this.

Hunnam crowed about the script. He crowed about the director. He crowed about the books and story. And most importantly he crowed about Dakota Johnson, even stating that they had AMAZING chemistry in their readings together.

He left because he got embarrassed and scared of what it would do to his career.

  • Dottie_182

I agree. I didn’t buy the busy schedule excuse. I think Charlie realised what a mistake this would be to him career and to be honest, I don’t blame him.

  • luna

she’s trying to much to be funny , cute or cool she’s cheap, as the movie is

  • Alexa

Yeah he was supportive of the whole project at the beginning but I think he realized while in pre-production that the whole project wasn’t of any quality…and wasn’t worthy to sacrifice his carrier and the great projects in hand for it. I saw the movie so he did well to leave! Period!

  • Mercyneal

Julianne Moore looks prettier and fresher than Dakota. Dakota’s been a smoker since she was a young teenager, and it shows. There’s a photo of her with her mother lighting her cigarette when she’s 16.

  • Alexa

Well ask Dakota! Apparently she still can’t get over the fact that he ditched the movie…probably she also had a crush on him. They were always talking about this big chemistry and usually chemistry exists when people are attracted to each other. Working with that piece of wood of Dornan must have been annoying and very difficult for her.
And to me it seemed that she was liking the idea of Letterman for Charlie’s return…obviously he was joking but she didn’t look like that.

  • EatThis

You sound like a 13 year old hater.

  • Alexa

The truth always hurts. And where is the hate?? I’m a little tired of people calling critic hate and bully when they don’t have arguments to defend their opinions. What I said about the movie and Dornan isn’t even half as worse than what the international critic said.
I liked the books, but the movie was disappointing!

  • Eeww

He left because he knew appearing in this joke of a movie would ruin his career & he’d never be taken seriously again as an actor.

Just because the film was a success for one weekend doesn’t mean it will be for the following week.

But most of all the movie was slammed by all the movie critics & that will have an effect on the future of Dakota & Dornan’s careers. They will be only offered C list movies from now on despite the initial success of the movie as the acting is beyond BAD.

There is a reason WHY no Hollywood A lister would go near this movie & that’s because they would rather keep their reputations as quality actors instead of being associated with this embarrassing mess.

  • Jennifer Fielding

If it weren’t for her parents, then she never would’ve gotten that part and she knows it. She is very homely looking even in her natural hair color. The movie itself is the most awful thing I’ve ever seen in my life. The whipping scene at the end reminded me of the Passion of the Christ. Do not see that movie if you were exposed to physical or emotional abuse as a child. It will give you flashbacks– or nightmares. I agree with Madonna. That is not sexy. It’s violence against women disguised as a “relationship.”

  • FerCat

Not necessarily. Victims of abuse tend to be abusive themselves later in life. They want to take back control and perhaps doing it in a fantasy environment is a better option for them. But to be fair, I don’t think this is a movie for them anyway.

  • FerCat

Not in this clip but in the rest I found her surprisingly funny. I was not expecting that.

  • Bob

She should not try to shade anyone because everyone knows she’s only working because Melanie Griffin and Don Johnson are her parents; having Antonio Banderas as a step dad and Tippi Hedren for a grandmother didn’t hurt either.

  • Jo

I really don’t like her for some reason… I’m pretty upset that Jamie Dornan got caught up in this film because he really has some talent.

  • Wanderersmind

This is painful to watch. She can’t hold a proper conversation.

  • Eriena Munson

Her acting was pretty good actually. Better than the guy.

  • Eriena Munson

Wrong. She did a great job as Anastasia.

  • Eriena Munson

Jamie Dorman is a very good actor, including for his role as Christian Grey. You may don’t like the movie but there are more people loved the movie including me.

  • Eriena Munson

Hunnam career would even bigger than ever if he was in this movie. People will recognized his acting chop although in the cheap movie or not. This was not a cheap movie at all in my opinion.

  • Alexa

She did a good job but not great! That wasn’t an award winning performance and let’s face it no one went to see her but the sex and her being beaten…so get real!

  • SkinnyFat

Charlie’s career is right where he wants it to be.

  • SkinnyFat

Yeah, I’m sure she’ll get an Oscar Nom for her “great” performance. *snorts

  • SkinnyFat

    So is he.

  • EatThis

“probably she also had a crush on him”
That’s as likely as you being a 13 year old.
International critics had arguments – you only have insults and speculations.
The only bully here is you.

  • mandyz

Hahaha not a cheap movie? The plot line of the movie is as cheap as the book itself. 50 Shades of Grey is a poor piece of literature period and it’s cringeworthy in how childish the sex scenes were written and paints the BDSM community as abusive and controlling when it’s completely inaccurate. If you want an accurate, stimulating read from a true BDSM novel series, The Boss by Abigail Barnette makes 50 look like 50 Shades of Shit. You have poor taste in cinema and literature if you think 50 is of true quality. That and your comments about Dakota’s “amazing acting” is making me laugh so hard right now.

  • Krl l

I’m talking about Dakota, she is a fame seeker, Charlie is very discreet person and I love is work, dakota is the one that likes to be in everywhere, I’m so tired of seen her in every article, this woman is so annoying, she’s not even a good actress, her performance in FSG was exactly like her performance in ben and kate, a comedian girl with a low self esteem

  • SkinnyFat

well she’s very famous now and very obnoxious. don’t worry in a couple of weeks when no one is going to see this schlock she’ll go away.

  • Alexa

So Dakota who mocks Charlie with whoops and gloats in his face is a grown up???? Clearly people who support her childish behavior are as childish as her! Clearly she had a crush otherwise wouldn’t still talk about him in her first big interview. They talked more about Charlie than Dornan…which drove Dornan’s fans crazy! 😃
And I have the same arguments as the critics but I’m not going to list them anytime a little girl like you who clearly can’t distinguish a good movie from a bad one or a great actor from just a beautiful one comments.
But just to enlighten you the movie sucked because didn’t have a script, all their lines were taken from the book without the minimum adaptation, making the lines sometimes awkward and some times comic. The director missed the spirit of the story and her camera was as impressive as that of a soap opera director…never caught details and the way the scenes were put together were so disjointed that people who never read the books weren’t understanding much. Jamie Dornan had this stone face for all scenes and failed miserably to show emotions and to enter in the role and make the character his. Where were the 50 shades of CG personality???…the intimidating, control freak, lunatic, possessive ect Christian?? I didn’t see any shade…and Ana enjoys discovering her sexuality in the books, in the movie she was so suffering & unhappy…that’s not what the books are about. And not let me begin with the second characters who were so misfiting.
Now let’s listen to your arguments!

  • Krl l

    Completely agree with you
Sam should have portrayed in the film why CG has become a sadistic man or maybe
show a glimpse of his previous life before meeting Ana, would make the story more interesting.
She just worried about showing to good looking people falling in love, a rich man that appears out of nowhere that falls for the silly with low self esteem girl, the movie was ridiculous, there was no essence and the characters were not interesting, I was expecting to see more CG and less Ana

  • EatThis

Girl, i never even wrote the movie was good. “Clearly she had a crush” – no, she answered the questions she was asked.

Anyony who writes comments that long, on a subject so trivial and silly, needs their head checked.

  • Alexa

You are right, it was a waste of time! Clearly stupid little girls like you can’t read that long texts. Don’t ask for arguments then if you can’t read and handle them.

  • Alexa

Exactly. I think Charlie’s Kevin Klein campaign has more depth and is more hot than that movie :))

  • EatThis

“stupid little girls like you” who’s the bully again?
How far will you go to prove your point of view?!

  • Alexa

I have read The Boss and loved book 1, not so much the other books in the series. But yeah there are great erotic romances writers outthere…like Georgia Le Carre, Jodi Ellen Malpas, Alessandra Torre, CC Gibbs, Megan D. Martin, Pepper Winters…the list is long :)

  • MrSpoiler15

Charlie was probably like, “this is the bitch they want to co-star with me? She is fugly! I’m out bitches”.
