What was he gonna do, keep it out all night? Rip it up and throw it in the air? Of course he would put it away!!!

  • Lee

If your name isnt daniel day lewis dont count on a sure win.

  • Rainbow3000

He already lost bafta and sags to Redmayne. What did he expect?

  • tia maria

who says it was his speech, it is hard to tell what is in his hand

  • Ashley

I don’t think there’s anything sad in what he did. It’s normal to have a prepared speech and expect to win. He did not win and that’s fine. The most important thing is that Birdman gave him a career boost. Here’s hoping he stays active in films for many years to come.

  • jennyv12

i think he deserved to win, he made an incredible job on birdman but the academy loves giving oscars to actors who portray living persons.

  • Guest

He shouldn’t have sat there with his speech in his hand while the nominees are being read.

I’m really sad he lost, but Eddie deserved that award!

  • Esmeralda

I wished he won the Oscar. It’s like you just want to take it all back and do it over again the right way. That was his chance.

Can’t movie stars, especially, Oscar winners, ever talk extemporaneously? Majority of them had to fumble reading the same boring thank you notes, thanking their wives, husbands, lovers, children, and dogs(?!). Realistically, you don’t have to thank all these people who had nothing to do to what they did in the particular movie they won the award on. Can’t they speak of something that comes to their mind at the time?

  • Tara Mendez

Well the BAFTA is negligible because the Brit will always take it in a close race. And Keaton did take home the Critics’ Choice Award. So, in a sense, they were deadlocked.

  • Fernando

I think Michael Keaton is too arrogant

  • VanityInsecurity

Michael Keaton was phenomenal in his performance but Redmayne truly embodied Hawking & The Oscars usually give the award to real life stories..

    Nooooooooooo :(

  • JustMe

    OUCH !
But that chewing gum in his mouth …. every single time camera was showing him he was chewing…so not classy..

  • LAChris08

No. Because they have to thank so many people. That, and many movie and tv star’s are not that good at public speaking. I know it sounds weird, as they are in front of cameras all day and all, but doing things live, remembering what to say, etc, aren’t always their forte. Most people don’t do speaking off the cuff anymore. Its dangerous, especially in the era of everyone reading every nuance of meaning into every word that comes out of their mouths.

  • LAChris08

Could be hes an ex smoker, or someone trying to quit. chewing gum is one way many people quit

poor guy. after a lifetime of memorable roles he didn’t deserve to lose. all the winner had was a sore back–never heard of him before the current movie.

  • JustMe

u are right, its not the chewing gum itself..and the reasons for it ;) The way he chewed it probably was the thing that bugged me. I find it inappropriate to do so in front of billions of ppl who are watching u..

  • jane

there is something about him that isn’t quite right and it came out during the whole awards season. maybe arrogance? entitlement? i dunno, but when you look at his age and what he has accomplished awards-wise (not much) there is a reason for that. his peers must not really like him,his attitude shows quite a lot in interviews.

  • jane

completely agree. the reason why he hasn’t had much success imo

  • TeamBella76

I agree with you but the SAG’s are usually a good indicator of who is going to win.

  • suzybel

I hope he wrapped up his wad of gum in it before he put it away.

  • JustMe

haha :)) exactly my thoughts :))
