Robbie Amell Interview – JustJared.com Exclusive

Just Jared: What was your favorite memory from the set of The DUFF?

Robbie Amell: Mae and I met for the chemistry read and I figured, if I could make her laugh, I had a shot. So my buddy Nick and I worked on a bunch of alternate jokes. The most fun I had was just getting to joke around and make Mae laugh. The chemistry really shows in the movie, and we just hung out the whole time.

My favorite part of filming was this one scene called Think Rock. If you watch the movie, you’ll know the scene. It was raining, we were shooting in this beautiful forest in Atlanta, and it was just a fun scene. We were given a lot of freedom with the lines, so much of the scene ended up being improvised.

JJ: Do you have a favorite off-screen moment?

RA: We went to Clermont Lounge in Atlanta, which is an old-person strip club. They call it where strippers go to die. (laughs) A couple friends of mine who’ve shot in Atlanta told me about it, and I told Mae, and Bianca [Santos], Skyler [Samuels], and Nick [Eversman]. If you order a beer, one of the strippers will walk over to the wall and crush the can with her ass. She’ll sign the can for you, and puts it in a plastic bag. It’s the weirdest place I’ve ever been, but that was so much fun.

JJ: What’s your next project?

RA: I’m still shooting The Flash. I go back for a couple episodes. They’re trying to get Stephen [Amell] and I on-screen together at the same time. So hopefully they can do that. I have a movie called Max coming out in August, where I play a marine. And I actually, while shooting The DUFF, I was getting prepared for that near the end of it, because I wrapped on a Wednesday. They put me in a car ’cause I missed my flight. They drove me from Atlanta to North Carolina, shaved my head and threw me into boot camp. So it was like eight hours from set to set. Boaz Yakin directed it, he directed Remember The Titans. Really good family drama. And Lauren Graham, who plays Mae’s mom on Parenthood, played my mom in Max.

JJ: Of your peers, who’s your celebrity crush?

RA: Kate Beckinsale, for sure.

JJ: What are the last two things you purchased?

RA: I bought Italia [Ricci] a Valentine’s Day gift. She had a not real, very inexpensive version of a ring and she wanted a real one made. So I had my dad make it. And I bought flowers for a woman who ran the PR trip I just went on in Toronto, because she set everything up for my family to come to the premiere.

JJ: What are the next two things on your bucket list?

RA: [The DUFF] was a huge thing on my bucket list. I wanted to get back on the big screen. My very first job was Cheaper By The Dozen 2, and it was the biggest movie I’ve ever been a part of, and it was a full wide release, and I had the smallest part ever. But it was such a special experience, and that was almost ten years ago. I love all the work that I’ve done, I’m very happy to have done all that work, but to be back on the big screen was a really big moment for me.

I’d like to do a cool action movie, really bad. My bucket list is very career oriented. (laughs)

JJ: What app do you use the most on your phone besides email, Twitter, and Instagram?

RA: Clash of Clans. I’m a huge geek and I play a ton of that. I play with a bunch of guys that are back in Toronto, and a couple of my friends that are in LA. So it’s not only a fun little game, but it’s also a little chat board for us.

JJ: How did you make your first dollar?

RA: I worked for a fire equipment replacement company when I was way too young to be working for an actual business. We replaced all of the fire alarms, or a fire alarm system, in a huge stable at a horse race track. The scariest thing about it, when you’re walking through the stables, you have to stay on one side of the horses because they’re not regular horses, they’re thoroughbreds. And they freak out if you startle them or go on the wrong side. My first day, I scared the sh-t out of a horse, which scared the sh-t out of me. And that was almost the end of it, but I stuck with it.

JJ: Pick two celebrities to be your parents.

RA: (laughs) Tom Cruise to be my dad. Actually probably not, that’d be weird. Michael Caine, but he’s really old. So Michael Caine to be my very old father, and the mom from Mrs. Doubtfire. She’s so good and she reminds me so much of my mom. Sally Field!
