Ryan Phillippe Opens Up On His Struggles With Depression

Ryan Phillippe sits down for an interview with Elle.com and dives deep into some serious topics.

Here’s what the 40-year-old actor had to share with the mag:

On depression: “You know, depression has been a huge obstacle for me ever since I was a child. As you get older I think it decreases some, but I’m just innately kind of a sad person. I’m empathetic, and I take on the feelings of others and transpose myself into the position of others… It’s just, some people do have this pervading sort of sadness, or they’re so analytical that they can kind of take the fun out of things because they think too much.”

On being a feminist: “I’m very feminist, man. I was raised by four women, my dad worked the 4 P.M. to midnight shift, so I was basically raised by four women. I’m so pro, pro female. There were some people laughing at Patricia Arquette’s statement at the Oscars, but, in the state of California, women make 83 cents on the dollar compared to the man’s full dollar. I mean over time, and over bodies, that adds up! It’s not equal!”

Another idiot actor who doesn’t understand that women make less because they tend to take jobs like cashiers that traditionally pay less, or because they’re more likely to work part-time jobs than men are.

  • Esmeralda

    You’re just an idiot period

  • Esmeralda

The headline is sensation at its finest

  • Guest

It’s good he’s open about having depression but is it necessary to expose his daughter’s depression to the world?

  • Esmeralda

He didn’t really say she had depression that’s the point

  • Alexandra

you’re just another idiot who doesn’t understand that if a woman and a man have the exact same job (let’s even say at the same company) and do the exact same tasks. The guy still makes more money than the woman. (Assuming that she actually gets the job because it is a fact that men still get hired over women even with the same resume.)

  • Dawn

The statistic about women making 83 cents per dollar that a man earns is based on men and women working the same job with the same responsibilities. It is not an average of all different careers combined.

  • Bob

You’re an an idiot for not understanding they’re comparing men and women with the same exact jobs and responsibilities not an engineer versus a cashier.

  • Dottie_182

    I love him!

  • Wzy

How he describes his own depression is actually how many experience it – being overwhelmed by environmental negativities. Discussing mental health helps take away more of it’s stigma and his children would not feel ashamed of that.
