Leonardo DiCaprio Gives $50,000 Donation to Adrian Grenier's Lonely Whale Kickstarter Campaign

Leonardo DiCaprio has just donated $50,000 to Adrian Grenier’s 52: The Search for the Loneliest Whale Kickstarter campaign to help it reach the $300,000 funding goal!

“Thank you to the 3,300 backers and The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation for making this science based creative project come to life. These donations validate our ongoing efforts and to get their vote of confidence is a huge moral boost for myself and team Lonely Whale,” Adrian, 38, shared in a statement.

He added, “The Foundation has been a leader in environmental conservation and I have been inspired by their work. I see how effective they are in many of their initiatives and take my cues from them. This is just the beginning and I can’t wait to share more news with the community.”

The Kickstarter campaign was launched to help find the elusive ’52 Hertz’ whale and fight Ocean Noise Pollution.

Hi! from the other thread! – so happy to hear about the donation to Andrian G. I had read about the whale he is looking for. It is thought to be a hybrid of a blue whale and another kind of whale (possibly a fin), which is why his song is unique. Also, congrats to Leo for his award from the Humane Society!

  • (S)

Very cool Leo is backing this potential documentary! It will be neat if they can locate the elusive whale.

  • Beard

    Awesome ! ! !

Just flag the spammers, a little hard with Disquis to find the flag button, but hover your cursor over the top right of that person’s comment and it will appear in a minute or so. I flagged her for you.

  • Justus

    Wonderful!

  • Shelly

I would say not a waste of money Leo’s doing good with the millions that he has gathered from others .Putting it to good use .

  • Joanna

    Very nice…

  • Mango

I’m sooo HAPPY about Leo’s donation to this great project! This and the award for his activism indicate again that there is so much more to him than parties and models.

  • Mango

Hi Sista :D How are you sweetie?

  • Joanna

Hi yourself, sweetheart!!!I’m just having lunch and am about to watch a movie, but how are you? :D

  • Mango

Fine, thanks. I’m just about to make lunch! :D Which movie?

  • Joanna

Borat (always cracks me up),have you seen it?:D

  • Mango

LMAO he is amazing! OMG I can’t breathe
    :D

  • sky

I agree, he should throw some of that money towards helping people. I would love to hear aboutLeo helping the handicapped or homeless in this country. I love leo but it seems as though he loves animals and the environment more. I’m not trying to diss Leo, so calm down.

  • ####

We hear about the money he gives to help endangered animals and the environment because of his Foundation. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t give money to helping people in need. We know he provided assistance after the earthquake in Haiti because he was at Sean Penn’s fundraisers so I’m sure he helps more than just the environment and animals.

  • Mango

Exactly! Leo has also supported SOS Children’s Villages. I think he first became involved while filming Blood Diamond in Mozambique. Hasn’t he adopted an orphan girl? If remember correctly, Leo supports various charities & foundations such as Cinema for Peace, amfAR, Feeding America,…the list goes on.

  • ####

I do think I remember hearing that he adopted an orphan during filming. The only reason we don’t hear about it as much is because it’s not coming from his Foundation but from him personally.

  • xxxDontKillRocknRollxxx

Perhaps he should donate to treat some mental cases on jj like you and disqus_XbJ7Frrv5r too. lol
Don’t you guys know that by helping the planet he’s helping humans too?

And so what if cared more about animals and the enviroment than for people? That doesn’t mean he doesn’t care about humans too. When someone chooses to stand up for a cause it’s because it means something to them. Maybe he’s like me. He likes ALL the animals and SOME humans.
There are plenty of celebrities who have embraced humanitarian causes. Ashley Judd, George Clooney, Brangelina, etc. Perhaps they can help.
    #### is righ. He has donated money to help humans (Directly) in the past on several occasions.

  • disqus_XbJ7Frrv5r

I never said anything about helping people directly or indirectly dummy. I said this particular project I feel in my opinion is a waste of money! There are lots of good enviro projects that I feel are engaging just not this one. I know its his money but this is my opinion on this opinion thread.

  • xxxDontKillRocknRollxxx

That comment was a reply to sky. She’s the one who said that.
As for you, well I assumed you shared her opinion. Good for you if you don’t!
Maybe there are better projects. Maybe they cost more money and/or are more difficult to succeed, I have no idea. Personally, I find it interesting the discovery of new species of whale. And I never find it a waste when it comes to raise awareness about animals or the planet. But that’s just me.

  • disqus_XbJ7Frrv5r

There are better ways IMO to raise awareness. This doesnt make sense to me. I’m all for people finding out about this planet but this sounds silly. To spend so much money to find an elusive whale or whale species. Maybe they dont want to be found by humans?? People finding things always dont bode well for the animals after their found. Maybe they’re hiding from people for a reason. I take the approach of if you see it you see it. Waste of money!

  • Shelly

I’m sure he does plus he takes care of his family and friends as well :)

  • disqus_XbJ7Frrv5r

You mean the hanger on friends?? Thats not taking care of someone thats turning people into dependents.

  • Shelly

Not the girls his close friends Leo seems to be the type just to help others out when they need it .

  • xxxDontKillRocknRollxxx

All wild animals usually are shy towards humans. And this whale travels alone so maybe it’s in her nature.
I know what you mean about not boding well for animals after they’re found, but it doesn’t necessarily happen every time. Besides, with Leo sponsoring this expedition, I seriously doubt that he would ever let anything bad to happen to this whale.
If you think there are better projects that need to sponsered, you should send them to LD Foundation. Who knows if they may happen too. :S

  • Mango

Yep, agree with you Shelly. Since Leo is the most successfull one among his friends, making more money I’m sure he gives his friends family a treat. Which good person wouldn’t?? Lukas is an actor, musician, and since he has an artistic vein, probably does sth art related too. Vinny owns several bars, Kevin C is an actor, Chuck P is a director, Tobey M. acts, Jonah owns Goal too….Hmm whoelse did I forget? Nevermind, they are all so depending on horrible Leo! How dare he taking care of his family and friends! ;-)

  • Lion Queen

I believe one of his soul missions on this planet is to help mother nature and animals. How some people can come on here and try to diminish that is beyond me. We all have something that calls our soul, for some it’s the environment for others it’s children who are suffering or the elderly..etc. maybe in the future he will take on humanitarian causes as well but for right now this is what his soul mission is at this point in time. I’d like to see what the people who criticize are doing to help this planet or the people in it??

  • Shelly

Lol plus I’m sure he helps his friends get jobs too .I think he gives back to this world many different ways maybe more ways than we see :)

  • Shelly

I think we need more people like Leo cause without a planet no life .

  • 77878

you really think that? that it makes people dependent towards him? That he doesn’t want to just give?

  • 77878

    jonah hill owns Goal?

  • Mango

    No Jonah Johnson! :D

  • 77878

    thank you . :)

  • 77878

    ah ok.

  • Shelly

That’s a friend of Leo .Jonah sons is Leo’s godfather .U may already know that but just in case u didn’t :)

  • 77878

no, i didn’t. He seems to be many people’s godfather.

  • Shelly

Just to the one that I know of .But I know what u mean he’s a good guy .

  • 77878

I think it’s great that he helps the environment, animals. he can choose what he wants

  • 77878

you said you lived in europe, where exactly if you don’t mind answering.

  • Shelly

Yep lots to choose from .

  • Shelly

Borat funny movie eh .I’ll have to check it on IMDb

  • lmao

He does it for tax breaks. Get real.
