Jane the Virgin's Gina Rodriguez Wants to Unite Latino Viewers

Gina Rodriguez looks chic while attending the PaleyFest panel for her show Jane the Virgin on Sunday (March 15) at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

The 30-year-old Golden Globe-winning actress was joined by co-stars Justin Baldoni, Brett Dier, Yael Grobglas, Andrea Navado, Jamie Camil, and Ivonne Coll.

During the panel, Gina gave an inspiring speech about needing to unite the Latino community and television viewers.

“We can unite and get our viewership just like Empire — ’cause where you at, 54 million plus?” Gina said (via Variety). “The Latino community here in this country is comprised of multiple cultures… They see us as one community and we need to be one community, because we all share the same struggle. That’s what we do as human beings — we celebrate each other, we celebrate each other’s culture, we celebrate each other’s religion, but we also unite as human beings. Let’s do that, let’s use our power as women, as Latinos, as whatever subculture you identify with, and at the same time celebrate being human. That’s what [Jennie] did — she wrote a story for a human.”

FYI: Gina is wearing a A.L.C. , an Elizabeth and James skirt, Stuart Weitzman shoes, an Edie Parker clutch, Le Vian earrings, and Harry Kotler and Doves rings.

Empire made it because it’s good and all cultures watch it

But the show’s primary demographic is African-American. She wants the people whom the government has labeled Latino/Hispanic to come together to create a big market.

I don’t really see that happening because there is no one shared common experience among all people with a Spanish surname. I also don’t think that “they” meaning Hollywood, I guess, lump everyone together. Look at Cristela, McFarland USA, etc. They know where the demographic is. They just haven’t figured out how to tap into it yet.
