'Orange Is the New Black' Emmys Petition Denied, Is a Drama

Netflix just hit a setback for its Orange Is the New Black Emmys campaign… the show will officially be considered in the drama categories this year.

A new rules change stated that all hour-long shows will be considered dramas and all half-hour shows will be considered comedies moving forward. Networks can petition the Academy to be placed in the alternative category, but Orange Is the New Black‘s petition was denied.

The series was nominated last year for 12 awards in the comedy categories and it won three, including one for guest actress Uzo Aduba. The SAG Awards and Golden Globes also considered it in the comedy categories.

The petition was looked over by a nine-member panel and all episodes of the current season were reviewed to determine “as to whether it predominantly takes a comedic or a dramatic approach to the material,” according to Variety.

I consider it more of a drama myself, with some funny moments inbetween.

    Overall, it’s a drama.

There are more than just “funny moments”. Some storylines are entirely geared toward comedy. They should just create a new category for Drama/Comedies. Many shows would benefit from it, especially with the influx of diverse content from Netflix, Amazon etc.

They should have forced Glee and the other two hour-long shows to be in Drama instead of making exceptions.
