Kerry Washington Delivers a Powerful Speech at GLAAD Media Awards - Watch Now!

Kerry Washington gave an extremely powerful speech last night while accepting the Vanguard Award at the 2015 GLAAD Media Awards and it’s definitely a must-watch this morning.

“On Monday morning, people are going to click a link to hear what that woman from Scandal said at that awards show, and so, I think some stuff needs to be said,” the 38-year-old actress started off her speech.

“Women, poor people, people of color, people with disabilities, immigrants, gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, trans people, intersex people…have been pitted against each other and made to feel like there are limited seats at the table for those of us who fall into the category of other,” Kerry said.

“We need more diverse LGBT representation [in the media],” Kerry added. “And this is big — we need more employment of LGBT people, in front of and behind the camera. We can’t say that we believe in each other’s fundamental humanity and then turn a blind eye to the reality of each other’s existence and the truth of each other’s hearts.”

This was a pretty lame speech. Now, before everyone jumps on me, let me say that I agree with her wholeheartedly.

The problem is that she isn’t saying anything we don’t know. There isn’t anything remotely insightful or nuanced or new that she’s bringing to the table. No interesting stories or data or proposals. It’s just her saying, “We need more opportunities for disenfranchised minorities, whether it’s LGBT, women, etc because they currently don’t have the same rights as everyone else.” Yeah, I knew that already. What else is new?

She says something very simple without adding anything more powerful than that. We know inequality is a problem, but don’t just tell us it’s a problem…say something MORE.

It seems to me that the most important point of her speech was not that we need more opportunities for disenfranchised minorities (as you pointed out, we all know that). The point is that we need intersectionality to be important. You can’t try to separate the groups to lift one up over the other.

I think this is essentially a response to the comments Patricia Arquette made on Oscar night: “it’s time for all the women in America and all the men that love women, and all the gay people, and all the people of color that we’ve all fought for to fight for us now.” They go against exactly what Kerry is talking about.

    Point taken, and well-phrased. Thanks.
