Max Irons Opens Up About His Father Jeremy Irons' Controversial Statement on Same-Sex Marriage

Max Irons looks so hot while covering Out magazine’s April 2015 issue, on newsstands now!

Here’s what the 29-year-old The Riot Club star had to share with the mag:

On his father Jeremy Irons2013 HuffPost Live statement that the legalization of same-sex marriage might open the door for interfamilial unions: “I remember thinking, You don’t know what you’re talking about. You’re thinking through a problem out loud. I know my father, and his views are similar to mine: As long as you don’t harm anyone else, what you do and who you love are nobody’s business. He has since clarified as far as I understand, and truth be told, if you pushed him to explain what he was talking about, I don’t think he’d actually know.”

On his rolemodels:Philip Seymour Hoffman was always a genius, but no one gave a sh*t about him in the beginning. He laid a foundation of work that went up and up until he could get a movie made. De Niro won’t even have his first two films on his resume, because he’s ashamed of them. I understand that kind of trajectory, and it takes time. And learning.”

On what he hopes audiences take away from The Riot Club: “I think if The Riot Club does anything, it’ll make people google the Bullingdon Club and ask questions like, ‘Do these men truly, honestly represent the values of the people?’ I’m not so sure. Our film has made certain people angry, and it’s also generated applause. And I think that’s exactly what we wanted and expected.”

It wasn’t more than 10 years ago that people were disgusted by the thought of same sex marriage, too – many of the same people who support it now. So, who knows what other kinds of marriage will be accepted 10 or 15 years from now? Who are we to deny someone’s right to marry an adult sibling, if they want to?

  • bbm

why do they ask him that? wtf

  • Baseliner

why do they have to ask him about something his father said, kinda sneaky and weird. also i don’t agree with him understanding the trajectory of de niro and hoffman’s career because he has a famous parent so i doubt that he had to struggle as much as them

Linking the two arguments still doesn’t work. Never has. Same-sex non-related couples have been fighting through the courts and legislatures to have their relationships legally recognized, and are winning. If a sibling couple wishes to marry, they can turn to the courts and present an argument for why they should be able. The two issues are not one in the same, and it’s downright ignorant to even try to group them together. Interracial marriage would be a better comparison; it all boils down to two unrelated consenting adults wishing to marry without distinction to their sexual orientation, something that can be changed just as easily as race can. See what I did there?
