Adam Lambert Can't Help Gushing About Sam Smith in 'Attitude'

Adam Lambert keeps it fierce on the cover of Attitude magazine’s May 2015 issue, out on newsstands on Wednesday (April 1)!

Here’s what the 33-year-old entertainer had to share with the mag:

On Sam Smith: “Sam Smith, hats off, he has had an amazing year, he’s a lovely guy. I’ve met him a few times. I’m so happy for him, and I’m so happy his sexuality wasn’t a big thorn in his side. It was just: ‘This is who I am, I’m cool with it and so you should be too.’ And his songs are timeless and beautiful, and everybody relates to them. He’s doing it right, for sure. I think with me and Sam, there’s definitely an understanding there, like: ‘Hey gurl, how you doing?’ [laughs] But you know, there’s only a few of us actually, on a mainstream level. I think we’re building a little clique, I hope, but I haven’t met that many.”

On Boy George & Elton John: “I mean, Elton John is amazing, what a sweetheart, and Boy George is also incredible. I’ve sat down and had lunch with him before, he’s so smart and has been though A LOT, and now he’s in a really good, healthy space, and loves music and is DJing and is still really connected to pop culture. He was really interesting to talk to.”

On his new single “Ghost Town”: “It was a bit like, ‘Well, this is the one.’ There are four or five other really obvious singles, but when we finished that one it felt special. It felt like it had to be the one.”

LOL He wasn’t exactly gushing – just mutual respect. Adam is always pimping and supporting other artists. Just who he is.

  • hopeso

If he is gushing it’s well deserved….I love Sam’s voice. I love all his songs got all of his videos on pinterest……He is GOOD

  • Bellingham Yorkshire

I’m not a fan of Sam Smith. I don’t like his voice. But good for him for doing so well

That’s nice but Adam’s photo shoot in Attitude magazine has nothing at all to do with Sam Smith. The whole point of featuring Adam in Attitude relates to ADAM’s career, successes and new album etc. I have no idea why JJ have chosen to pretend he had nothing else to talk about other than how great Sam and a couple of other artists are.

  • Lifechnger

disappointed, the focus of this Article should be Adam and his new music.
    I won’t RT it

  • bill

    sam can’t touch adam’s voice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Glamberr

Adam is hot as ever. It terrible at Adam has had such a hard time gaining recognition for his talent. He is far better than Sam. Because of Adam, other artists are being less labeled, but they won’t remove the label from Adam. I will continue to support and love Adam. I don’t even listen to the radio anymore, just Adam’s music. Glamberts are there for Adam all the way. Awaiting “Ghost Town” release.

  • loff

ITA, Adam had far harder ride than Sam Smith had , but wish him well he looks like he’s happy now and well adjusted compared to past few years. He also did one hell of a good job with Queen Freddy will be proud.

  • loff

I hope Adam and Sam do a song together both have great voices also will be empowering.

  • Mila Ho

    I love Sam Smith^s Voice…

  • 6plus12

Sam’s good, but his voice is limited in what he can sing. Lambert’s versatility is extraordinary – spectacular live performer, as well.

  • 6plus12

Lambert, imo, has the finest male voice in the biz today – unlike some, his ability to sing a wide variety of styles is unusual. His range as well – check his performances with Queen’s difficult songs – is beyond any other male singer’s now. And live? Brilliant. (Looking forward to hearing that extraordinary voice again in his new album – April 21!)

  • jason

adam is nowhere near the talented singers he just mentioned, he should open for the village people on the g@y cruise

  • 6plus12

Ah – the usual cowardly homophobic troll making an appearance – sorry your musical knowledge is so limited – those who actually are of consequence in the music biz know the brilliance of Lambert’s voice and have stated so.

  • AdamLambertVzla

He loves Boy George <3!!! :)

  • loff

Adam for sure is a spectacular performer especially Live , he’s doing a great job with Queen, but what i’m saying is I hope he does a duet with Sam so it give him further exposure that he deserves.

  • Steve France

Why do you spend your time reading about Adam then? I think you really like him. I don’t like Sam Smith and I find his range limited and he has no stage presence. I won’t waste my time seeking out articles about Sam and more so waste my energy posting a comment about someone I don’t like. Hmmmmm I think you like Adam. Own up to it and embrace it!! It’s a hell of a ride being an Adam Lambert fan!!!!!!! Most talented entertainer today !!!!!!

  • Sam Sammy

I am disappointed with how you have focused on promoting Sam Smith in Adam’s interview with Attitude Magazine, just jared!

I thought you are Adam’s friend, and therefore won’t promote Sam Smith at the expense of Adam.

In my opinion, Adam is a much more superior vocalist and live performer than Sam Smith.

  • 6plus12

Understand what you’re saying, but, for me, I’d rather he get exposure elsewhere. Sam has a fine recording voice, but, as a performer, find him basically dull.

  • Vànlin Ti Glambert

Adam lambert better than Sam 100%!!!!

  • Annie Saunders

    It is really annoying how
Adam keeps on coat tailing Sam Smith. I hope Sam does not give him the time of
    day. Definitely not worth it.

  • Jason

    Poor Annie

  • Annie

Ok but Sam is still way more talented and more successful than he is. A lot younger, too.

  • Kerry Kolsch

Sam Smith is a good singer but he is not in the same league as Adam Lambert. Lambert is the voice of his generation like Elvis and Sinatra were for theirs. Sam has had an easier road than Adam because nobody looks at him and thinks of sex. Sam appears to a the very safe neutered gay male that society is comfortable with. Adam on the other hand is extremely handsome and he is thrusting and grinding in tight leather pants that he appears to be almost bursting out of. One can not help but think of sex. It does not matter if you are straight or gay, man or women. That makes middle America very uncomfortable. Adam has survived because of his undeniable talent, his persevering spirit, and his strong work ethic. The momentum is snowballing downhill and he is about to achieve the fame, fortune and recognition he deserves. I can not wait for his new single and album, “Ghost Town” and “The Original High”.

  • Kerry Kolsch

Really? Sam is very ordinary and Adam is spectacular. Sam is at the height of his career and Adam will keep soaring. Actually Sam reminds me of the Pillsbury Dough Boy.

  • Kerry Kolsch

What talent are you talking about? Certainly not singing. Sam could not kiss Adam’s blue suede shoes.

  • Kerry Kolsch

You sound like a Kris Allen fan who can not get over Adam’s success.

  • Guest

He simply said that he likes him, he’s a good singer and they’re friends. Sam Smith didn’t come out until way after he was popular and no one ever made it a big deal. There aren’t 5,000 headlines saying, “is he or isn’t he?”, nor do they care. Most people don’t know he’s gay or that his album is about a longing for a man. People made Adam all about being gay, instead of about his music. Ultimately, that’s been good for the LGBTQ community and understanding but it’s made a difficult road for Adam himself.

  • Kim

WTH is going on, Jared? It took you THREE DAYS to post about Adam’s “Ghost Town” snippet. You wrote nothing about his exclusive interview and photoshoot for Hunger TV, and your complete focus in this article about his interview in Attitude magazine, in which he talked extensively about his own new music, is on Sam Smith! What up with ‘dat? You used to be so supportive of Adam.

  • MicheleMusicfan

Adam was “out” right away, before he was signed to a label. Sam came out after he already had hits. I think that made a big difference for him – plus, he’s not as OTT, therefore, considered “safe”, whatever that means.

  • Amanda Rae King

Adam is the one talkin about Sam so its right for him to be promoted to Sam Smith is awesome to and Adam respects him. That is the reason HE talked about him in the interview. Stop with the hate. Yes Adam is a rock god and i love everythin he has ever done. No one can compare but that doesn’t mean to hate on someone else just because that person ain’t Adam. Especially someone that Adam speaks of so highly. Thats disrespecting Adam by talkin shit about Sam.

  • Annie

Just saying that even though Sam may not have the range Adam has, he is able to use his voice in a more versatile and tender manner. At the age of 22 he is more convincing and more honest when performing and style wise he is in a totally different league than Adam at the age of 33. Sam is not into tacky hip thrusts, some awkward stage antics and ridiculous outfits and hairdos. Sam makes great music and delivers it in good taste. That’s why he is so popular all over the world and loved by many.

Referring to Sam’s name in interviews and in social media over and over again is just an attempt to get some media attention. I really think Adam should concentrate more on his own music and how he could make it on his own and not by coat tailing others.

  • Liliane

Annie: LOL “tacky hip thrusts, some awkward stage antics and ridiculous outfits and hairdos.”, Oh Lord, I hope you are not still referencing the AMAs for this. It’s been 6 years since and Adam has evolved and given so many other performances in which he did not do any hip thrusts nor wear any crazy clothes and hairdos.

Not that there should be anything wrong with hip thrusting and wearing crazy outfits on stage if he feels like it. So, do you hold the same contempt for Elvis and Michael Jackson as well? From what I recalled, they also hip thrusted and wore crazy clothes on stage.

So, just because Adam used to dress a certain way and that he dared to be sexual on stage in a few songs that called for it, he is not honest as Sam? So style and how you dress is how you measure a singer’s talent? No wonder, Adam has had a hard time being recognized for his talent. It is precisely because of people like you who only looks at the outside that we have all these pre-manufactured pop stars that cannot sing if their life depended on it.

In an ideal world, where sexuality, style and image do not matter and where people would value honesty, creativity, diversity and talent above all else, Adam would have been a superstar filling up arenas for a long time.

Because vocally, especially live, not many artists can touch Adam, Sam included. I’ve seen both live. Sam is a good live performer but Adam is just in a total different league both vocally and in terms of stage presence. Adam is the very definition of a star. Don’t get me wrong, I do like Sam. I like his soulful voice and a few of his songs and he is a good live performer but saying that he is more versatile than Adam as a singer is just ridiculous. Adam can sign any style and sing it extremely well. All I have ever heard from Sam is the same melancholic miserable ballad. Sam is new and seems to be the man of the hour but let’s see where he will be in 6 years.

So yeah, all this to say that Adam does not need to ride on anyone’s coattails. His talent speaks for itself.

Adam is not only a very talented artist, he is also a very kind person who is very passionate about music and that is why he has made it a habit of promoting other artists (both more popular and less popular than he is) on his Twitter. That is just who he is and that is why he chose to talk nicely about Sam in answer to a question about his other fellow gay artists. It is just really unfortunate that people like you are cynical enough to equal kindness and graciousness with “riding on Sam’s coattails” and “wanting free publicity”.

  • Annie

“Annie: LOL “tacky hip thrusts, some awkward stage antics and ridiculous

No, actually I was referring to his recent tour with Queen.

  • Liliane

Annie: Well it is Queen and this is what is called camp and spectacle. It is Queen, it would have been inappropriate to wear a t-shirt with jeans or a suit to sing. Adam’s outfits and antics were actually just perfect for the shows. They were very appropriate and added a lot to the shows. I went to the Queen+Adam concerts in England and they were the best concerts I have ever attended. It was a sold-out tour with unanimous praise by both audience and critics alike. Have you ever seen Adam live? He is actually very funny and talented and he just shines on stage. And when he sings ballads like “save me” and “who wants to live forever”‘it just rips you heart apart. When Adam is on stage, you cannot see anyone else. I am glad more and more people are getting to experience him live through Queen because he is just amazing. Crossing my fingers for his new music and single.

  • Annie

I have seen him perform with Queen live and judging by the yt videos I’ve seen he hasn’t changed much. He was okay on Idol when he got some guidance and mentoring but left on his own the tacky in your face humping seems to be his trademark – not his music. You may call it ‘camp’ if you like and I do understand it has certain appeal to his mature female fanbase but the older he gets the more disconcerting it looks.

  • Hep.

Are you for real?,what a load of BS!..Adam Lambert is world famous and rich and in no need of Sam or anyone else for that matter,Sam had a great year, good for him but don’t tread on Adam because you are fan of his, makes you look very petty and close minded.

  • Hep.

    Either way,a stupid reference.

  • Hep.

Great post and spot on about Annie, you really held a mirror to her face and made her face the ugliness of her words.

It is obvious that he needs the support of people like Sam Smith and young people in general. His audience mostly consists elderly women and his fansites are run by women belonging to the same age group. People who are not in the right demographic group can actually ruin a person’s career and it seems to me that this has been one of his problems all along. He is also very old school and he has failed not only in reaching the attention of young people but also winning the hearts of the general audience. I agree he is a skilled singer but unfortunately he fails to deliver emotions in a credible manner.

You can prefer the standard milk toast, neutered gay male all you like, but to suggest that Adam is not vocally superior is just a joke. Go clutch you pearls and say your hail Marys because no one gives a rats ass about your distaste for a playfully sexy performer.
