Angelina Jolie On Life Struggles: 'What Does Not Kill You Makes You Stronger'

Angelina Jolie recently sat down with Elle.com to chat about her film Unbroken and her thoughts on news around the world!

On directing: “I prefer directing to acting. There is huge freedom that comes from being behind the camera. It brings a lot of responsibilities as well, but is intensely rewarding. Particularly the chance to help draw out the best in young actors, like Jack O’Connell in Unbroken, who is a remarkable talent.”

On gaining wisdom from struggles: “I do believe in the old saying ‘What does not kill you makes you stronger.’ Our experiences, good and bad, make us who we are. By overcoming difficulties, we gain strength and maturity.”

On the kind of world issues she would like to highlight: “It is not really the nature of the news, but what we do with the information we have. We know more than ever before in history about conflict and injustice happening across the world, but the will to translate that knowledge into pressure and action at a global level somehow seems to be lacking. Time and again, after massacres and atrocities, the world says, ‘never again.’ But in Syria today, to take just one example, these things are happening with impunity in the full knowledge of the world. We need a greater focus on solutions—not just on information.”

    ANGELINA JOLIE: “WHAT DOESN’T KILL YOU MAKES YOU STRONGER”

    The ‘Unbroken’ director on why she refuses to look back, the problem with the news cycle, and what she learned from Louis Zamperini.

    BY EMILY ZEMLER

    Unbroken, the almost unbelievable story of Louis “Louie” Zamperini, marked Angelina Jolie’s second time stepping behind the camera. The director’s unblinking interpretation of Zamperini’s life is both moving and hard to watch as it showcases the Olympic runner surviving in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash during World War II, only to be captured and sent to a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. The film, which stars Jack O’Connell, is now out on DVD, Blu-Ray, and Digital HD (so you can, thankfully, cry in the comfort of your own home). In commemoration of its release, Jolie let us pose a few questions about directing Unbroken and what she learned from Zamperini’s story. Her words, like the ones in her recent the New York Times op-ed about her decision to undergo preventative surgery due to the risks of the BRCA1 gene, are inspiring and smart.

    What artistic need does directing films satisfy for you?

    I prefer directing to acting. There is huge freedom that comes from being behind the camera. It brings a lot of responsibilities as well, but is intensely rewarding. Particularly the chance to help draw out the best in young actors, like Jack O’Connell in Unbroken, who is a remarkable talent.

    There was a lot of discussion about how challenging it was to make Unbroken. When you reflect back, is there anything from the shoot you still think about now?

    I tend not to look back and dwell on a project once it is finished. But I do remember how intense the atmosphere was on-set filming some of the tougher scenes [such as] when Louie is being brutalized. It was very moving how always, after those scenes, the actors involved would check [and make sure that] everyone was okay and look out for each other.

    Was there any scene or moment you had to cut from the final version of Unbroken you wish could have been in there?

    Louie’s life was so extraordinary that is was impossible to capture it all on film. So there were inevitably things we had to leave out when telling the story. But as director I had the final say and felt that we were able to do justice to it. I do look forward to audiences being able to see the scenes that were cut [that are] now on the DVD. When Phil discusses marriage to Cecy on the raft, when Fitzgerald stands up to the Bird, and the full Cinderella play are among the scenes [about which] I am excited will now be seen.

    What do you think is the greatest lesson we can learn from Louie’s story?

    Like many of the greatest human stories, it is about the capacity of regular men and women to rise above adversity. It reminds us never to give up, and that having the spirit to fight is what really matters. It is powerful because it speaks to the potential inside all of us.

    “I DO BELIEVE IN THE OLD SAYING ‘WHAT DOES NOT KILL YOU MAKES YOU STRONGER.’”

    Louie obviously went through a great struggle. Do you think there’s wisdom to the idea that struggle helps you grow?

    I do believe in the old saying ‘What does not kill you makes you stronger.’ Our experiences, good and bad, make us who we are. By overcoming difficulties, we gain strength and maturity.

    Who are some young, up-and-coming filmmakers you’re supporting?

    I like to work with artists from around the world. There are so many new inspiring filmmakers. I had the privilege recently to work with Ethiopian filmmaker Zeresenay Mehari and his wife on the filmDifret. They are that unique balance of very thoughtful conscious filmmakers who are also brilliant, original artists.

    “THE WILL TO TRANSLATE THAT KNOWLEDGE INTO ACTION SEEMS TO BE LACKING.”

    If you had the power to redirect the American media’s attention away from gossip or non-news reporting, what issues would you highlight?

    It is not really the nature of the news, but what we do with the information we have. We need a greater focus on solutions—not just on information.

    Do you ladies think there is any chance By The Sea could be shown at Cannes? I would like that so much.

  • well

    DIdn’t they just start sound this month? PT, O2 or others might have better insight, but I think the film would have had to have been turned in already bc they announce the Cannes line up in mid-April. It would nice, but not sure how that could work, but we’ll see soon!

  • lyric

    Thanks well. I guess it doesn’t hurt to hope.

  • Observer2

    I don’t know how that would work if the sound isn’t finished on a movie. Sound/music. If they allow for unfinished movies to be screened with the idea, if they’re accepted, they would be complete by a certain date.

    I know that Tarantino has shown previews of his movies at Cannes, though he’s a favorite of theirs and has been on the jury and I believe, head of it, once.

    I guess we’ll know when they announce. LOL

    Oh. I thought you meant she’d written another one today. These are both from Sunday. The first link is the one where I left the comments citing the multiple interviews in which Angie had recently referred to Shiloh by her bith name and as she, her and daughter. The second link is actually the first story she wrote and then she followed it up 3 hours later with the drivel at the first link. It’s still a sad display of inept journalism. I do find it hilarious that she deleted my comments schooling her on her ignorance. Then again, the whole idea is to get hits and earn advertising dollars – it’s NOT to be accurate and fair.

    Oh great, Ticky’s make-up person is in NOLA. There’s another coinky dinky. Who has a movie shooting there? And who has a house there in the French Qtr,?

    Wonder if she’ll be taking pics of Brad and Angelina’s home to send to Ticky on her recon mission. LOL

    +++++++++++++++++++++++

    Do you mean that Gucci chick? The one who encouraged her to get her ear cartilage pierced? You know…the ear cartilage ring we HAVEN’T seen since the day she was conveniently papped with it after she cut her hair? That makeup person? LOL! Where was that ear-cartilage ring she was flapping her gums about last spring during her Oscar run? Same place the dyslexia is – in the discarded pile of used PR tricks that nobody bought. Next up – nipple, nose and belly button piercing…

    Oh, okay it’s deep and meaningful…….just action for those that like the ride………I don’t consider these real movies……they are just visual crack.

  • Observer2

    They’re action movies.

    Do you consider the action movies that Brad and Angelina have done as visual crack and not real movies? J/K. LOL

    It seems to be getting very good reviews.

    Who the hell is selling Angie, Jamie and her mothers childhood photos, FK sake, talk about selling them out.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++

    I think an easier question is – who isn’t? There’s always someone selling old pix of Angie to some tabloid or other. It happened with Brad throughout his career, too. They still crop up occasionally but most people in Springfield these days are over being asked about him and won’t cooperate. It’s par for the course.

  • Dawne

    If Angelina is doing action I’m all over it because she is a woman in a non typical role and she is fabulous at it. I am not a big production movie fan………it’s too easy. Only hits primative emotion… expect BTS will be my fave JP film. I watch a lot of European films….I like a STORY with a few people involved……..not a lot of CGI, blue screens and all the other tricks of action film making………….just give me a Changeling, Mighty Heart ………Gia, Girl Interrupted and I’m good to go. I don’t like ‘BIG’ …..loud, noisy, action filled………hate all comic book stuff…….

  • Observer2

    I’m both because sometimes, I just want to have some mindless fun. LOL

  • Dawne

    You are so funny………..sweet and spiritual message about beauty ad God and heart and then……….CHEW ON THAT TICKY……….hilarious.

  • Dawne

    I get that, but I’m mindless half the time so don’t need to seek it out. LOL

  • Dawne

    I guess if they want them there badly enough they may bend the ‘by date’ for Angie if she is not yet ready…….ya nevah know.

  • Dawne

    What’s with this incessant pairing of JLaw and BC? I really don’t get it…..SLP worked so they are now Lucille and Desi?

    Jana500 Observer2 • 6 hours ago

    I did the math below. Even used my calculator. LOL!

    Today is Day 204.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++

    Ladies, come on…does it really matter when you’ve been unemployed even longer than that? Crack wrapped somwhere around May 30, 2014. That makes it 306 days since Ticky last worked on a movie. Is there a bad movie god? If so, let’s all take a moment to sweep up the dead hair on our bathroom floors and offer it up in supplication for doing us a solid and keeping TIcky unemployed. Sometimes when you hear something and you go , hang on I heard that already , let me guess by whom lol. People are so unoriginal ,so lack imagination and intelligent that they have to resort to being pressed by what Brad and Angie say and then they copycat them *waiving at Justin Timberlake copying Angie’s Inspirational We are Different Nickelodeon speech* that fker never has an original idea he steals Michael Jackson music and now trying to be all down to earth humble , 2 faced fker.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++

    Justin Timberlake stole Angie’s KCA speech? Damn…that didn’t take long. As you noted – his entire career has been built on stealing everything Michael Jackson ever did MUSICALLY…only not as good…

  • 50ftQueenie

    You know she loves her body chains, nothing sexier than connecting your nose, nipple and belly ring with a chain. Especially when you’re pushing 50 with leather skin.

    According to her, she’s pushing 25 and yes, she still has leathery skin. LOL
