Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie's 'By the Sea' Gets Release Date

It’s official – Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie‘s upcoming movie By the Sea will hit theaters on November 13, according to THR.

This will be the first time the married couple has appeared on screen together since Mr. & Mrs. Smith back in 2005. This will be Angie‘s second time in the director’s chair after her critically-acclaimed movie Unbroken.

By the Sea is set in France during the mid-1970s and follows Vanessa, a former dancer, and her husband Roland, an American writer, travel the country together. They seem to be growing apart, but when they linger in one quiet, seaside town they begin to draw close to some of its more vibrant inhabitants, such as a local bar/café-keeper and a hotel owner.

“This is a story about a relationship derailed by loss, the tenacity of love, and the path to recovery and acceptance,” Angelina said in a statement. “It has been a privilege to explore these universal human experiences with such a generous and talented cast and crew.”

ARE YOU EXCITED to see Brad and Angie in By the Sea?

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt Collaboration ‘By the Sea’ Set for November Release

By Anne Thompson | Thompson on Hollywood May 7, 2015 at 7:16PM

Two of the biggest stars in the world got together to make the kind of intimate relationship drama they make in Europe, not Hollywood. Because they could.

Husband and wife team Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, who first worked together on Doug Liman’s smash spy thriller “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” are back together on-screen in the relationship drama “By the Sea,” which Universal Pictures has slated for awards-friendly release on November 13, 2015. International markets will follow.

Writer-director-producer Jolie Pitt is following up her Christmas 2014 Universal release “Unbroken.” This time she stars in the film opposite Pitt, who plays American writer Roland, who arrives at a 70s French seaside resort with his wife (Jolie Pitt) to work on their marriage. They spend time with fellow guests, including young newlyweds Lea (Mélanie Laurent) and François (Melvil Poupaud), as well as village locals Michel (Niels Arestrup) and Patrice (Richard Bohringer). “By the Sea” is inspired by European cinema and theater of the ’60s and ’70s. “This is a story about a relationship derailed by loss,” said Jolie Pitt, “the tenacity of love, and the path to recovery and acceptance.”

“Anytime you do something based on history and you have respect for the subject matter and you have a responsibility to the past, it’s quite a lot of pressure and with something as logistically complicated as “Unbroken,” to go to a very small piece that I wrote about relationships that’s very experimental and logistically easy was a very nice change,” Jolie Pitt told me when “Unbroken” opened, admitting it that “it wasn’t fun or easy” to direct herself. She did enjoy her husband though: “Yes, that was actually more fun. Working with him was a real pleasure. He’s a joy to work with.”

“Angie and Brad have created an intimate gem of a film that will surprise people,” said Donna Langley, Chairman, Universal Pictures, “and delivers an experience they might not expect from them.”

The crew is led by cinematographer Christian Berger (“The White Ribbon”), who used his Cine Reflect Lighting System to shoot the film; production designer Jon Hutman (“Unbroken”); editor Patricia Rommel (“The Lives of Others”); and costume designer Ellen Mirojnick (“Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps”). Pitt also produced. Chris Brigham (“Inception”), Holly Goline (“Unbroken”) and Michael Vieira (“Unbroken” are executive producers.

Thanks. On the way home, I told my daughter I was going to go to bed, elevate my foot, put ice on my heel and rest. As I hobbled to the computer to check my email, I thought I would say goodnight to Jolie Pitt fans everywhere. Whamo! I’m cured.
Just now walked normally, without a limp, to the fridge to get the forgotten Ice. She’s a miracle worker! :0)

Sort of OT–I just read the Anne Thompson article/interview with Angelina, when Unbroken was making the rounds. Anne says that the screeners for “Unbroken” were sent out late for GGs and SAGs…..you’d think that with a Christmas release, Universal would be on top of that. On top of that, PERIOD.

    Thanks!

  • trt

It will have. She said that the story is about the tenacity of love, acceptance, and path to recovery after the loss. So, goes to follow that this will have a happy ending although tears will be shed along the way. Looks like movies of old where they almost always have a happy ending with the leading lady and the leading man getting together after all.

  • http://thecompletehistoryofbradandangelina.blogspot.com/ Lady Valeria

Could go either way. Angelina AND Brad are huge gets for awards shows….I remember the Oscars used Brad and Angelina’s names for promotion of the Oscars, like they were going to be there. I almost thought they were going because of that.

But I also don’t want Angelina or Brad to be nominated because of their names…..the awards should mean something. All of their nominations and wins (except for “The Tourist”, I think that was a fun popcorn movie and that’s it) have been justified and merited. But Brad and Angelina together–good Lord, they can’t make a bad movie. I think MAMS was a mediocre script, but Brad and Angelina completely transcended the script and film……

  • toastie postie

Don’t know about Deadline – But they have: The drama will face off against some wide openers that weekend: Warner Bros’ mine-disaster pic The 33, Paramount’s horror sequel Rings and Open Road’s Bill Murray-Bruce Willis pic Rock The Kasbah.

Didn’t post the article, because they have, smack dab in the middle of the article, headlines about Africa being on shaky grounds.

  • wika

Never heard of those, but I’m sure everyone has heard of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie LOL

  • gemdiamond

Don’t care about the other movies. Only Brad and Angie for me!!!

  • wika

True, and their nominations are always for drama-type films. Man it’d be so good if 2016 will be like 2009… minus the random appearance by tick during the Oscars LOL

  • Beck

This is a really good release date, awards wise. And I don’t care one bit about the Oscars (except that I like when my favorite celebrities are nominated because they go to all these events and we get lots of interviews) but this is good news in terms of how confident Universal is that the movie is good and is potentially an awards contender. Since I think that this movie is potentially make or break in terms of Angie’s directing career, that makes me feel really good, especially considering that this doesn’t sound like a typical awards bait film the way Unbroken was. And though less so, the movie is also a risk for Brad as a producer- if this were to somehow go bad, it would be very easy to accuse him of unprofessionalism, that he financed the movie because his wife wanted him too, not because of merit.

  • wika

“Because his wife wanted to”??? I don’t know why people think he’s THAT wimp of a person. You’re talking about a producer who does risky movies ALL THE TIME LOL…

  • http://thecompletehistoryofbradandangelina.blogspot.com/ Lady Valeria

Great comment. Exactly what I was thinking…. :)

  • yolly

Finally, good news. I already penned it down Nov 13 to see By The Sea in theater. Thank you JJ.
God bless the Jolie Pitt Family.

  • cycleon2

Hello!!! I’m SO EXCITED- November 13th is just so far away. I guess old manny can finally set her date- KIDDING- I think. At a minimum, we can expect even more paid pap parades & planted puffy lies from the leathery old cougar. OT, but this is hilarious to me- I’ll admit I dislike David Brooks’ (the subject of this piece) politics, but Burneko’s writing is very amusing regardless of whether you know Brooks is or not (whole thing is long, but entertaining, as are the comments):
    .
In the years since, he has been a reliable producer of out-of-touch, tissue-thin pronouncements on the perils of our secularized, technologized 21st century lives, virtually all of which rightly can be interpreted as passive-aggressive nostalgia for what Family Circus comics told him “outdoors” might have been like when he was a kid. You could just about set your calendar by it: In a month of Brooks, you’d get the call to begin or continue a war with Iraq or Iran, the grasping attempt to paint some cretinous Senator or presidential hopeful as the intellectual heir to Edmund Burke, and then, at last, the decline-and-fall column. You’d see a headline like “The Slow Virtues” or “The Hollow Century” or “Why the Teens Are Despicable,” and you’d know ol’ Dave’s coffee shop was out of plain croissants a week ago and the barista had a nose-ring and he’d decided he’d witnessed the death of the Western moral tradition. http://theconcourse.deadspin.com/i-dont-think-david-brooks-is-okay-you-guys-1702674607/+AlbertBurneko?utm_campaign=socialflow_deadspin_twitter&utm_source=deadspin_twitter&utm_medium=socialflow

    make or break? what? ahahahaha
there are directors directing for years that haven’t achieved what angelina has with her 2 films
if she wants to continue to direct she will easily find work specially after what she did with Unbroken n how she sold it

what was the name of that producer who recently mention angelina and spielberg as the only ones that could make and sell adult films?

n every film is a risk for anyone involved
brad didn’t financed the film universal did
he produced it because he loved the script and he believes in angelina talent as a director

also angelina doesn’t use or needs brad to achieve what she wants
    n everyone knows that
