Taylor Swift Talks Heartbreak & 'Happily Ever After' in 'Elle' Cover Story

Taylor Swift holds up her guitar on the cover of Elle magazine’s June 2015 issue, on newsstands May 19.

Here’s what the 25-year-old entertainer said in her interview, which was conducted by blogger-turned-actress Tavi Gevinson:

On breakups: “‘Clean’ I wrote as I was walking out of Liberty in London. Someone I used to date‚Ä”it hit me that I’d been in the same city as him for two weeks and I hadn’t thought about it. When it did hit me, it was like, Oh, I hope he’s doing well. And nothing else. And you know how it is when you’re going through heartbreak. A heartbroken person is unlike any other person. Their time moves at a completely different pace than ours. It’s this mental, physical, emotional ache and feeling so conflicted. Nothing distracts you from it. Then time passes, and the more you live your life and create new habits, you get used to not having a text message every morning saying, ‘Hello, beautiful. Good morning.’ You get used to not calling someone at night to tell them how your day was. You replace these old habits with new habits, like texting your friends in a group chat all day and planning fun dinner parties and going out on adventures with your girlfriends, and then all of a sudden one day you’re in London and you realize you’ve been in the same place as your ex for two weeks and you’re fine. And you hope he’s fine. The first thought that came to my mind was, I’m finally clean. I’d been in this media hailstorm of people having a very misconstrued perception of who I was. There were really insensitive jokes being made at awards shows by hosts; there were snarky headlines in the press‚Ä”‘Taylor Goes Through a Breakup: Well, That Was Swift!’‚Ä”focusing on all the wrong things.”

On the idea of happily ever after: “I’d never been in a relationship when I wrote my first couple of albums, so these were all projections of what I thought they might be like. They were based on movies and books and songs and literature that tell us that a relationship is the most magical thing that can ever happen to you. And then once I fell in love, or thought I was in love, and then experienced disappointment or it just not working out a few times, I realized there’s this idea of happily ever after which in real life doesn’t happen. There’s no riding off into the sunset, because the camera always keeps rolling in real life. It’s magical if you ask anyone who has ever fallen in love‚Ä”it’s the greatest. Now I have more of a grasp on the fact that when you’re in a state of infatuation and you think everything that person does is perfect, it then‚Ä”if you’re lucky‚Ä”morphs into a real relationship when you see that that person is not in fact perfect, but you still want to see them every day.”

3 Years later and still talking, referencing to Harry Styles: God!! Leave the guy alone…He’s always on papers linked to her…WTF it was a fling come one, ” you get used to not receive text messages every morning”, means he was over her long time before she was, he moved on right after the breakup if not before cause he seemed to not even give a damn about her and their fling!! She’s the only one always kind of bringing it in any way possible!! Come on Taylor, you did the same with Joe Jonas, John Mayer and Jake Gyllenhaal: they all moved on from her quickly: what’s her problem…

  • Exposed

You went from relationship to relationship without almost any downtime. Most of them were PR-relationships, so of course you weren’t in love; but if they were real, then you probably weren’t in love either. Love rarely comes and goes that fast; lust and crushes aren’t the same

  • chloe

This is actually a pretty good interview.

  • jane

i agree! it’s the first time we can see her full quotes in context. she sounds a bit smarter and more mature

  • jane

her problem might be that she actually liked the guy. you move on when you don’t care much. she obviously cared for the one she keeps referencing.

  • jezella

So for which one did she care more? She dedicated an entire album to her love story with Jake Gyllenhaal, John Mayer is almost in every albums, Joe was in 3 of them too…I mean if we tlak about songs materials, then Jake G is the one who have more songs…Just saying…Isn’t trying to say that she understood she wasn’t “in love” but just infatuated…But now guess she changed, great move cause she seems more mature now, a girl who stuck to a younger guy ( she dated for a month )that long must have problems tbh, mostly when the guy showed numerous times he didn’t care…

  • Adriana Vargas

    i agree…always the same
