Ariana Grande Calls Out Double Standards & Misogyny: 'Being Empowered is Not the Same as Being a B-tch'

Ariana Grande took to Twitter to air some frustrations she has with how women are portrayed in the media and in life.

The 21-year-old entertainer started off the essay by explaining, “being empowered is not the same as being a b-tch” and that “having something to say is not the same as having a bad attitude.”

Ariana continued, “What I meant when I said what I said about not being [Big] Sean‘s ex is that I am tired of living in a world where women are mostly referred to as a man’s past, present, or future property/possession.”

She then went on to give specific examples of the double standards in society. Read her thoughtful note below.

I actually think that’s a pretty thoughtful note. and Im negative about everything, for real.

“I am tired of living in a world where women are mostly referred to as a man’s past, present, or future property/possession”
This is such a true statement, we as women are often treated like objects. We cannot allow ourselves to be perceived this way, “used” or “hand-me-downs”.

  • CourtneyBettyEricLee

The funny thing is that its, women who are most guilty of attacks, slurs, and smears against other women.

  • Benny Ehud

A woman can have sex ANY TIME she wants!! A man has to work for it. It is not the same!! Quit whining.

But, I don’t call women sluts, hoes, or bitches. I just call them crazy :-)

  • FrenchGirl

The worst enemy of the woman is the other women and the conservatives

  • Benny Ehud

Guy’s are the same thing. “That’s Britney’s ex!” That’s how people refer to men and women.

  • Roman

While I understand women can/should be empowered, this girl clearly abuses her power. (ie getting carried like a baby when she’s tired)

  • Esoteric11

I actually like her more now. As I get older, I see this is very true. Right on, Ariana!

  • Phoenix_Chakra

I hear what your saying but its still no excuse. To be honest, justifying slut-shaming by saying “men have to work harder for sex and its not fair” (I’ve heard other guys say this as well) makes men sound somewhat insecure. As long as both parties are responsible and respectful towards one another about it, no one should be shamed for enjoying sexual relationships-female or male.

  • Baseliner

    she’s very annoying

  • Benny Ehud

I wrote that I don’t call women any of those names. I think it is childish to call them names. And, I never said if it were fair or not. I don’t care about that.

However, I know a woman having a lot of sex is different than a man having lots of sex. It’s not the same. I don’t shame anyone. I just think people differentiate b/c we think of men as dogs anyway. We are viewed as nasty. Society doesn’t want to see women that way.

AGAIN, I DON’T CARE!! Sleep with whomever you want. I don’t call women those names. I just call women crazy. That has nothing to do with sex LOL

  • Jay

No men are the worst culprits. And some women can be just as bad. ‘That is not how a woman behaves’ and ‘that is not ladylike’ as well as slurs are what piss me off the most. ‘Slut’ I hate that word, but it doesn’t even mean promiscuous anymore, you can be a virgin and everyone can know and people will still call you a slut. You can be a married woman and they will still call you a slut. It is simply used to shame women and to put them in a box.

Ariana shut up and continue to crawl in your underwear to sell your music. So much about presenting women as (sex) objects. I find it funny how some of these singers (Ariana, Beyonce, Rihanna…), who have such an intense sex image and build everything around it, talk about how women shouldn’t be objects. News flash, your sexy image is designed to make you appealing to boys and to sell you and your music better. They promote sex and nudity and people care more about their looks and bodies than their music. When you get a song written by someone, music done by someone, when you are told how to sing it and your male manager creates a sexy image, you are just a product designed to bring him money. The fact that you earn money too doesn’t make you independent or strong. You sell yourself. Because of women like these who put sex where it shouldn’t be (in music, on the red carpet) and who use nudity and sex to succeed, women are treated like objects in the first place.

  • Mike1288

Yeah but would they admit that? Most hate on websites like these are woman on woman. I think it’s easy to pass the buck on men cause we have done a lot to oppress woman. But now it’s more than just gender vs gender its more complicated than that.

I amd one of her “babies”. Love you and support you, Ari! <3

    No one calls Timberlake so.

    you misspelled karaoke

  • http://notly.ru/ Mapгapитa Бaбoвниковa

    use vaseline

  • Benny Ehud

They call Federline that! They don’t call Britney, Timbelake’s ex this many years later.

  • http://notly.ru/ Mapгapитa Бaбoвниковa

Federline is nobody while Ariana is a popular artist.

How Federline can be described anymore?

  • Benny Ehud

They called Timberlake, Britney’s Ex years ago!! They call Chris Brown, Rihanna’s Ex. They aren’t going to do it forever. Things get old.

  • Benny Ehud

They have described TIMBERLAKE as BRITNEY’S EX before!! They dated almost 15 years ago!! They don’t talk about it now! The man is married! They called Brad Pitt, Jennifer’s Ex! IT HAPPENS LOL

You all are making more out of it than it is. She is not the ONLY famous female/male to be described as someone’s EX!

  • Phoenix_Chakra

ah ok :) I know you didn’t say it “wasn’t fair” but I what I meant was that I’ve heard other men say the same thing you’re saying and then they would mention how its not fair that women can get sex easier and then those same men would use that to justify name calling. I know you didn’t say that though. As far as the concept of having lots of sex being different for both genders, I guess we can agree to disagree but at the same time I understand what your’e saying about that and how society doesn’t want women cast in the same light.
    Peace~

  • Stepka Vlk

I think good for her. Now she can focus on singing, dancing, and acting. As for her personal life, couldn’t care less.

  • http://notly.ru/ Mapгapитa Бaбoвниковa

There is a difference between mentioning partners in retrospective bio-article and describe “Ariana, 21, Big Sean’s ex”.

  • Benny Ehud

They are calling her that now!! They will stop in the future!! LMAO They have done it to men!! They have called Chris Brown, Rihanna’s Ex!! This isn’t gender bias. What she is a young, spoiled, naive, pompous individual. I let her slide on some things b/c she is too young to know how dumb she is. She is the one that is insecure and needs to sort things out. She is the one who admitted that she couldn’t go w/o man for the last 8 years. She said this LOL She is the one being super-sensitive.

She acts like she is the first and acts like men don’t get the same treatment. Men just don’t care!! It’s a dumb issue to talk about it.

Some women complain about the dumbest things. So what if a woman is called a b i tch for being bossy? They call men a**holes for being bossy. Kobe Bryant is routinely called an a**hole. Rahm Emanuel has always been known as an a**hole. That’s what bosses get called. It’s not gender biased. Grow the h*ll up.

  • johnny1248

She is trying her best to empower people and fight against misogyny and now you say she’s dumb ? She knows what she is doing,i mean would ever like to be known as the ex of this girl instead the guy who makes fantastic music ? I mean she is right,in general every celebrity should not be known as the ex of this guy but they should be known as a talented artist

  • johnny1248

No ariana’s right, the fact that her image is sexy she doesn’t do that because she wants to sell more, she does that because she is comfortable in her own skin. The real problem is Miley,i mean don’t you think it’s slutty to see that miley rubs her crotch in front of children and gets positive reviews for that ? Absolutely. The booty shaking it’s not the problem, every girl is doing that and there is nothing wrong, the real problem is when they go too far most notably miley who rubs her crotch, uses the foam finger as penis and does sex acts on stage.

  • johnny1248

Sorry the real annoyance is Miley. Why are you offended by ariana ? Is it because she is right ?

  • johnny1248

For goodness sake stop believing in those rumors, she denied those.Just because there is a rumor it doesn’t mean it’s true, the fact that she denied those rumors doesn’t show that ariana is protecting herself and that she is lying, she is telling the truth.I mean for god’s sake,it’s not true.As for getting carried,it’s not because she is tired,it’s because her feet were bleeding from dancing(her ex said that) and it makes sense because she is dancing with heels

  • johnny1248

I mean the fact that you believe those rumors it’s like you are trying to find something to bitch about her. When a rumor is not true and it’s denied, the case is over, period.I mean she doesn’t try to protect herself by lying, she is telling the truth.

  • Benny Ehud

She’s a young dumb person. She really is. EVERYBODY (MALE/FEMALE) is known as the ex of someone when they first breakup. It lasts about 6 months or so. Then it’s over. They have referred to Timberlake as Britney’s ex.

  • johnny1248

She’s not dumb when she says something which is right.Even tho it’s typical to describe someone as someone’s ex after a break up,but it’s not right to have this kind of reputation.Timberlake should have never been known as britney’s ex,instead he should have been well known for being a successful artist and that’s the same with Ariana.Ariana has a tremendous talent but the people themselves pay too much attention to her dating life which is completely annoying.Who’s the dumb ? The media.Like i said it’s typical to be described as someone’s ex after a breakup but it’s not right to have this kind of reputation especially when you are a music artist.I mean instead of paying too much attention to ariana’s talent, the people pay too much attention to her dating life. I MEAN WHY IT’S SO IMPORTANT FOR THE MEDIA TO KNOW WITH YOU ARE SLEEPING WITH,WHAT YOU’RE EATING,WITH WHO ARGUED INSTEAD OF HER MUSIC ? SHE.IS.NOT.DUMB.FOR.WHAT.SHE.SAID.

  • johnny1248

Absolutely i mean it’s not right to have this kind of reputation.I mean why it’s so important for the media to know with who you are sleeping with, what you are eating and with who you argued instead of paying attention to your music ? I mean ariana has a tremendous talent and the people unfortunately pay too much attention to her dating life

  • johnny1248

Really old,i mean why it’s so important for the media to know with who you slept with, where you went previously, with who you argued instead of paying attention to their music

  • Benny Ehud

It’s ALL entertainment LOL It’s not that serious. They just need something to talk about

  • Benny Ehud

She’s dumb to worry about it. It’s not that serious. That’s whyb I caled her dumb. They will pay attention to your dating life when you post it on IG. She helped put it out in the media.

  • johnny1248

Well maybe but it’s never cool to expose someone’s dating life.I mean would you ever like the paparazzis to catch you kissing your girlfriend ?

  • Benny Ehud

I don’t care. It’s not that big of a secret LOL
