Angelina Jolie speaks at AU Summit on sexual crimes against women

ohannesburg – Hollywood actress and UN envoy on refugee issues, Angelina Jolie-Pitt spoke at a panel discussion ahead of this weekends AU Summit held at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg.

She highlighted the fact that sexual crimes against women are becoming the weapon of choice for armed groups all over the world because these often happen without punishment.

“The near-total impunity that exists worldwide for crimes against women in conflict zones in particular, means that we are seeing more and more armed groups turn it into their weapon of choice,” said Angelina, who was dressed in a long, sleeveless charcoal dress.

With her hair drawn up in a pony tail highlighting large pearl earrings, Angelina said that women and girls are bearing the brunt of extremists. “This is inextricably linked to our overall failure to prevent and end conflicts worldwide, which is causing human suffering on an unprecedented level.”

Angelina, who is the UNHCR special envoy and who kept the 200 or so diplomats and leaders waiting for half an hour, spoke as part of a high-level panel on women, peace and security, which included AU Commission Chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and former British foreign secretary William Hague, who is working with Angelina on an initiative to deal with sexual crimes against women in conflict zones.

Angelina says that 50 million people have been displaced by war today, more than half of which are women and children.

“This means more women and children are exposed to violence, countless more girls out of school who are vulnerable to rape and sexual slavery, generations whose talents are lost to their home communities and to humanity as a whole,” she went on to add.

And while Angelina says this is certainly not an African problem, it is a global one, she did say that African nations have suffered the most.

She called on societies who are at peace to lead in the fight against sexual violence against women and said men should work alongside women in this fight.

Her arrival was met with excitement by members of the press and delegates.

Yesterday, Angelina spent the day meeting activists as well as survivors of sexual violence (See that story here). It’s also believed that she may do some charity work while in SA before she is expected to leave the country over the weekend.

Angelina Jolie urges African leaders to tackle ‘epidemic’ of rape in war
Angelina Jolie Pitt today appealed to foreign ministers in Africa to lead the fight against rape in war on their continent.

The world-famous actress pleaded with them to ensure that a landmark agreement, signed in London a year ago, to combat sexual violence in conflicts is put into practice on the ground to stop horrific abuses.

Before addressing the foreign ministers in Johannesburg, she said: “There is a global epidemic of violence against women which can no longer be tolerated, and must be addressed.

“Every individual in society has a role to play in achieving this change.”

She co-hosted last year’s London gathering with the then Foreign Secretary William Hague and it saw more than 150 countries backing a protocol on tackling sexual violence in war zones.

“As we mark one year since the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict, we are determined to continue the campaign to end impunity for these crimes,” said Mr Hague.

“We need action on a broad front and in many different nations — changing attitudes through education and leadership, eroding impunity by holding perpetrators to account, and helping survivors rebuild their lives.

“The member states of the African Union are a vital part of this effort.”

Ms Jolie Pitt and Mr Hague spoke with victims of sexual violence and activists leading the campaign against it at the office of the British High Commissioner to South Africa, Judith Macgregor, in Johannesburg yesterday.

The meeting was “very moving but also rich with ideas for future action to help us fight this widespread but all too often unchallenged evil”, Ms Mac- gregor said afterwards.

In Iraq, Islamic State fanatics have carried out systematic rape and other sexual violence against women, children and men. British military experts have trained 700 Kurdish fighters on how to identify victims of these atrocities and offer support to them.Foreign Office minister Baroness Anelay, appointed earlier this week by David Cameron as his Special Representative on Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict, said: “The scourge of sexual violence has no place in today’s world. To those who commit these barbarous acts, our message is clear: we will not allow you to deny your crimes, and we will hold you to account”.

Co-Founders of the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative, The Rt Hon William Hague, UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie-Pitt and AU Special Envoy Bineta Diop meet African campaigners for women’s rights

The co-founders of the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative, former UK Foreign Secretary The Rt Hon William Hague and UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie Pitt, joined Special Envoy Diop to meet survivors of and campaigners against sexual violence, at a forum hosted by the British High Commissioner in Johannesburg today.

Mr Hague and Ms Jolie Pitt are attending the African Union Summit as guests of AU Chairperson H.E. Dr Dlamini-Zuma. They will take part in events to highlight the urgent need to address the use of rape as a tactic of war, and to empower women across the continent. In talks hosted by UK High Commissioner Judith Macgregor, they discussed how experiences gained by those working to combat sexual violence in South Africa and the region could be brought to bear in the fight against conflict-related sexual violence. Experts spoke of the deliberate targeting of women during conflict, the shocking level of impunity for these crimes, the importance of military training and doctrine and the imperative to protect, honour and support survivors. They emphasized the importance of involving men and boys, and changing harmful attitudes towards women. They also discussed the exceptional vulnerability of migrants and refugees and the need for leadership in recognizing their status and needs.

William Hague said: “As we mark one year since the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict, we are determined to continue the campaign to end impunity for these crimes. We need action on a broad front and in many different nations – changing attitudes through education and leadership, eroding impunity by holding perpetrators to account, and helping survivors rebuild their lives. The member states of the African Union are a vital part of this effort.”

Angelina Jolie Pitt said: “There is a global epidemic of violence against women which can no longer be tolerated, and must be addressed. Every individual in society has a role to play in achieving this change.”

British High Commissioner Macgregor noted the meeting had been “very moving but also rich with ideas for future action to help us fight this widespread but all too often unchallenged evil.”

Jolie asks AU to protect women
Johannesburg – Hollywood actress and United Nations (UN) ambassador for refugees Angelina Jolie on Friday called on men attending the African Union summit in Johannesburg to intensify efforts to stop the rape of women, especially in conflict-torn areas.

“I am pleading with you as leaders to live up to your promises and beyond. You as men can play a bigger role by arresting and prosecuting perpetrators, allocate funds for survivors of sexual violence and really help root out violence and discrimination in all forms,” she told delegates attending the AU panel discussion on women, peace, and security.

“You can lead on this issue here in Africa. There is no inspiring role model than a man who protects and fights for the rights of women.”

The panel, which included AU chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, British politician William Hague, and the UN secretary general’s special representative on sexual violence and conflict, Zainab Bangura, discussed the occurrence of sexual violence against women and girls in conflict areas.

The rape of females by soldiers working in conflict zones was not only happening Africa, but across the world, she said.

“More people are displaced by wars today than after the World War 2. There are 15 million people displaced today due to conflict and half of them are women and girls. Girls are out of school and more vulnerable to rape,” Jolie said.

“It is clear that this is not an African problem, but a global problem.”

Jolie said she was encouraged by African countries that came up with measures to stop the scourge. She added that countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia and the Ivory Coast had plans to stop gender-based violence.

“The crucial thing is whether these plans would be implemented and effected. I plead with you please think about what it would mean if 54 members states here, press together as one for the rights of women…not only for this great continent but for the whole world.”

Britney Spears Wants To Be Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie’s Nanny

If Britney Spears wasn’t a huge pop star, she’d loved to take care of kids – a group of six famous kids, in particular.

On Friday, the pop star appeared on ITV’s “Good Morning Britain,” where she revealed her alternative dream job.

“I’ve met Brad Pitt once but I’d like to meet the [family] again, and I’d like to become their nanny,” she told Ross King.

The mother of two would love to look after Brad and Angelina’s brood, which includes Maddox, 13, Pax, 10, Zahara, 9, Shiloh, 8, and 6-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.

“That sounds fun to me!” Britney continued.
