Miley Cyrus on Award Shows: 'Beyonce Would Never Be Down in the Front Row Cheering on Katy Perry'

Miley Cyrus opens up about gender fluidity, female competition in Hollywood, and more in this brand new interview.

Here’s what the 22-year-old singer had to share with Time:

On dating an “overly macho man” versus a female: “That made me feel like I had to be a femme-bot, which I’m not. And then when I was with a girl, I felt like, ‘Oh sh-t, she’s going to need someone to protect her, so I’m going to need to have this macho energy.’ And that didn’t feel right either.”

On crying on Valentine’s Day last year: “All the women in the restaurant were with these older, fat men that had just let themselves go. They were just being drunk bastards. And then the women were sitting there, trying so hard just to look good. And they’re ignoring them the whole time. And I thought, ‘I’m not living like this. If I end up in a straight relationship, that’s fine—but I’m not going to be with f-cking slob guys who are watching porn, making all their girls feel ugly.”

On gender roles: “I don’t associate men and protection necessarily. I think that’s what’s given me the openness of sexuality. Not that my dad wasn’t an awesome protector, but I trust my mom to save me. She’s the prince. I never had that fairy tale.”

On not liking award shows:Beyonce would never be down in the front row cheering on Katy Perry.”

  • Davis

    She’s a slob herself

  • Arx

OMG i know! A millionaire child who has become a nudist bisexual and drug addict. Everyone I know is just like her!

  • Martha Bartha

    Wow! You must be privileged!

  • Martha Bartha

I still wanna shoot my load all over her!

  • Casey C

she literally says she takes on a macho role to ‘protect’ when with a girl and then says doesn’t associate men with protection. pick one sweetie

  • Sha Har

  • Arx

I know i am! I have glitter sex with them all the time. We walk around with our tits out and poorly sing songs that other people wrote while making millions of dollars. #mylifeisamazing

  • LiiL

Im starting to give up all the hopes, that she’s ever going back to normal. and normal does not mean booring for me, just not this “toomuch” someting who she became. I dont know why it is even bothering me…

  • devvv

If you feel like you have to be a protector when you’re with a woman and not with men, you do associate males with protection. And what does that award show quote even mean? What does Beyonce have to do with Miley’s dislike for award shows? She sure didn’t have a problem with them when she was twerking at the VMAs or bringing homeless kids to make speeches…

  • bec215

It’s sad is that her lack of worldly experience and education makes her so inarticulate and boring, when all she wants is to be provacative and controversial. If she spent some time DOING something out in the world, rather than sitting home and doing weed, she might realize that the world she describes is very specific to L.A. Ugh. What a waste.

  • SquidBillie

Has “become” a bisexual? OMG! Go back to school!!!

  • bec215

Real? More like a hypocrite and a sad drama queen, desperate to stay relevant, like every other pop-tart in Hollyweird. She is trying so, so hard… and it’s ironic for a girl who’s bordering on skeletal and only after acheiving that physique started throwing her naked body all over the place, to talk about men body-shaming women and watching porn, when that’s what she uses to sell her music.

  • bec215

Watching someone throw away an amazing career with immense potential; someone who was relatively normal compared to the average celebutant, IS sad, and it bothers me because teen girls are pack animals and they still look up to celebs and model themselves on girls like this – and that is when it bothers me.

  • bec215

The joy of social media – the freedom to say anything and walk away, unchallenged – is also the sourge of our day. It enables narcissism and discourages thoughtful debate. All that matters is what you think, and not if you can defend your POV. I wish it were just about Miley, but it’s pretty much the default state of being for anyone with a smart phone.

  • Gee

Why can’t she just make music and/or be a visual performance artistĂ© or something, instead of trying to present herself as an intellectual?

I bet she’s congratulating herself on what a straight-talking bad-arse she is. In the meanwhile, we the readers are left wondering what the heck is her point in any of these. Award shows what? Protectors are male/not are male? I’m so open-minded and non-judgmental, and oh by the way overweight = slob?

  • Arx

Yes she said she’s a bisexual now. Aw did I upset u? Are your lips firmly attached to Miley’s clit?

  • Michael Dante

Miley used to be such a sweetheart now… she not only seems desperate but a bath person when she should be a shower person. She looks like she be offensive to all senses.

  • Jay

Hahaha, the BeyoncĂ© statement made me laugh. Firstly, I can’t imagine Katy Perry ever giving an amazing performance. Secondly she picked the one pop star that has never had a ‘feud’ or uttered a negative word about any of her peers. Bitch just does her.

  • My view

There are so many things wrong with her statements it’s not even funny. The part about seeing women in a restaurant with fat men, is in my belief a completely made up story. And if it’s not, she made assumptions about relationships based purely on her perspective rather than any actual personal knowledge of all the people involved, that, quite frankly – makes her look moronic.

  • Aunt Heather

ALL I know is that she basically said a bunch of nothing. I remember being that age and expounding on things I knew nothing about after a toke or two.

  • Aunt Heather

SHE’S like all 22-year-olds: They learned everything by the time they were 17.

  • moonlight

She can’t be 22, these are the unfocused musings of a sheltered 16 year old. Christ she has so much money, why isn’t she traveling the world and realizing that half the damn women on this planet didn’t even celebrate valentines day because they were too busy being single mothers or living in a war torn country. celebrities suck

  • PlayNice

Miley is a delusional walking/talking contradiction. It’s getting to the point where nothing she says adds up with previous statements she’s made. She tries THAT hard to stay relevant and to seem intellectual. I don’t think she even knows who she is on the inside.

  • Martha Bartha

As long as you have fun………….

  • M. R.

There is a difference between porn and nudity/sexuality though.

  • M. R.

You should re-read what she said. She was talking about being conditioned to think one way about femininity and masculinity.

  • M. R.

Just Jared did a bad job at explaining the quote about award shows. The TIME article this was taken from has more context.

  • legen.. wait fa it.. dary

    U don’t do weed….
