Rachel Dolezal's 'Today' Interview Video: 'I Identify as Black'

Rachel Dolezal has broken her silence following the controversy surrounding her race – watch her interview on The Today Show held on Tuesday morning (June 16) in New York City.

“I identify as black,” Rachel explained, adding that she has felt that way since she was five-years-old.

“I was drawing self-portraits with the brown crayon instead of the peach crayon, and black curly hair,” Rachel continued. She says she has not deceived people as some say she did. “I do take exception to that because it’s a little more complex than me identifying as black or answering a question of, are you black or white?”

“As much as this discussion has somewhat been at my expense recently, and in a very sort of viciously inhumane way come out of the woodwork, the discussion is really about what it is to be human,” she said. “I hope that that can drive at the core of definitions of race, ethnicity, culture, self determination, personal agency and, ultimately, empowerment.”

I mean we DID accept Bruce as a woman.. some asians have plastic surgery to look Caucasian…why not accept her as she wants to be identified as black?

  • CLX

I think she can identify as black all she wants, and there is nothing wrong with that. But the elaborate lies she created about other people to sustain that identity are not acceptable. She was manipulative and crassly fraudulent and seems incapable of taking responsibility for those actions.

    The hair, tried to hard….

    Because SHE’S NOT?!

She wants it both ways she sued her alma mater Howard Univ bc she felt discriminated against as white. Then once she received an MA from them her claim of being white she left behind and then claimed she was African American. I think she could of done more good being a white then black since some white american’s do not empathize with the plight of being black. She could of been a strong leader on this front on behalf of the NAACP. Also there are also claims that she discriminated against African American women in the Africana Classes she taught in WA, so she would need to address that also.

I dont agree with changing your physical appearance to be what your mind thinks you are. I understand it but as a scientist I think this needs to be studied better (i.e. chemistry, genetics) That said if we are going to try to make this PC then I am sure there are a lot of non-blacks that want the privilege of being white. Would everyone advocate for that since many have tried and died or tried and failed

Are u stupid, Sam, or just pretend to be? Shes a delusional woman, a perfect example of what libtardism can do to u. Upside down world we live in…. So if u are paralysed, Sam, u pretend u can walk?

Her poor sons, this must be so confusing. Especially the ‘hate crimes’. Why would a mother get their kids involved in something like that.

  • Baseliner

now people are identifying as different races that are not their own? what the hell is going on!! this needs to stop

  • Dory Phore

I don’t agree with pretending to be someone you’re not. Ppl don’t like being fooled. But, lies and all, this woman has done a great job with the NAACP. She can continue to work for justice, as true herself.

Now that she’s made her appearance on the Today show, let’s hope she disappears.

  • Eleonora Miroshnikova

    Excuse me,but she is crazy.

  • CLX

I don’t see much difference between her changing her appearance and the gross and excessive plastic surgery that this country seems to glorify. As noted above, I think her lying and manipulations were completely unacceptable, but I could care less about how she wants to present herself physically, whether it be with fake tans, make-up, plastic surgery, hair treatments, etc…

Can we all do that? Can all the college applicants freely identify their races to get some advantages from Affirmative Action? Can all applicants for college teaching positions pick and choose their race to get a step up from others?
Now come back to Tom Hank’s son, Chet Haze. The dude was criticised for using N-words in his tweets and lyrics. He claimed that he may look white, but deep inside he’s black. So he thinks he can use the N-word freely. He didn’t even blackface.

Identifying as black and actually being born a minority are two different things. She was born to two white parents and went to a tanning booth and got her hair done.

This woman got everything that she deserved claiming to be black and getting all the benefits that come with being a minority.

She should have claimed to be Native American instead of black though as then she wouldn’t have to pay taxes to the government.

  • nardy

Can we stop giving this nutjob attention. I bet you something bigger is going on and they are using this silly woman to distract us.

  • nardy

They do not have surgeries to look Caucasian get over yourself.
