Amanda Seyfried Was Only Paid 10% of Her Former Male Co-Star's Salary

Amanda Seyfried is the latest female celebrity to open up about the gender wage gap, saying she was once paid significantly less than her male co-star in a movie some years ago.

“A few years ago, on one of my big-budget films, I found I was being paid 10 percent of what my male co-star was getting, and we were pretty even in status,” the 29-year-old actress told The Sunday Times.

“I think people think because I’m easygoing and game to do things, I’ll just take as little as they offer,” Amanda continued. “But it’s not about how much you get, it’s about how fair it is. You have to decide if you’re willing to walk away from something, especially as a woman.”

Many have speculated that the male counterpart Amanda could be referring to are Channing Tatum, her co-star on 2010′s Dear John or Justin Timberlake, her co-star on 2011′s In Time.

Of course. Because there could never be a world where a woman doesn’t earn as much as a man, without some form of sexism, right? Sure, it could be myriad of reasons, up and including the fact that you may not have the star power you think you do, but no. It’s clearly is sexism.

Standard feminist garbage. Always playing the victim.

  • Michele V

It can’t be In Time. She doesn’t have the same status as Justin Timberlake, and I’m sure she knows that.

    Dear John, maybe.

I was thinking Les Miserables? Maybe Eddie Redmayne got paid more than her.

  • devvv

While I’m completely aware of the wage gap and the fact that women are regularly paid less than men, I think this has more to do with her star power than gender. She’s not really the draw in most of her movies. Even in Mean Girls, she was more of a second hand character than the main box office draw.

  • j b

It could have been that she was in less scenes then her co-star and actually had to do a lot less work. Which would mean that she deserved to get paid for only doing 10% of the work of her co-star on screen.

  • Martha Bartha

She shoulda sucked their cocks! They kinda expect it.

  • Jess

While sexism exists in Hollywood, there are so many reasons she could have been paid less. Maybe her male co-star was the #1 choice and got paid a lot and the studio offered the role to 5 other women before Amanda Seyfried and so she got paid a sixth choice salary. And I don’t think she has been the most famous person or the actor with the highest status in any movie she’s done.

  • k.

But 10 %? That’s too much of a gap. Even if the person did have more star power than her and/or more screen time, it doesn’t excuse it. 50% less might have been acceptable if her counter part had had twice the screen time.

  • mintoreo

No, it isn’t. If the guy was the main character and is billed first (like Justin and/or Channing), he will be paid more. She’s a CO-star. But that’s not all of it. Could be a crappy agent. Could be she didn’t negotiate enough. Could be anything. Why are people always jumping to sexism ?

  • Mrs. Freeze

She, the actress, doesn’t have the same status as Justin Timberlake, not an actor, a singer?? I don’t think so.

  • Mrs. Freeze

    GTFO !!

  • Mrs. Freeze

    Bullshit to that.

  • Mrs. Freeze

That movie was made more than 10 years ago..she’s been in numerous movies since then.

  • Martha Bartha

    Josh Hutcherson

  • mintoreo

    Nice rebuttal, dumbass.

  • Mrs. Freeze

so resorting to name calling is a smart move. gotcha!

  • FerCat

My guess would be the movie Epic and it’s Josh Hutcherson.

Keywords: FEW years ago, Big Budget, EQUAL in status by her opinion, 10 percent.

That gap is way too big to hide unless the starting point was relatively small to begin with like in voice work.

She would never equate herself as equal to Channing, Timberlake or even Redmayne, specially now with his Oscar. She would peg herself much lower.

Nearly all her films are not big budgetters except for one which is Epic. Her next biggest was Les Miz which is still not really a big budget film. A film she said she would have done for free. So I doubt she’ll bitch about that. Not to mention Redmayne had zero status at the time, no way they would have paid him that big.

The Sony/Fox/Columbia triumvirate are known for this kind of crap. Epic is by Fox.

  • FerCat

Her work ethic would consider the time allotted.

  • FerCat

She was fairly unknown. I really doubt she question that one. And yes it’s too long ago.

  • mintoreo

It is, when referring to someone like you, yes.

    So, keep crying.

    Dumbass.

  • FerCat

Eddie Redmayne was unknown at the time with no status yet. I doubt he got paid that much.

Dear John is not a big bugetter.

  • FerCat

Right, that’s why my guess is voice work. Cast may never have met much prior to completion. Pay fairly smaller also.

  • j b

Probably the truth but feminists have never been that smart.

  • lshelton22

    Nice cornrows, wigga.

  • beautylover

I’m guessing it’s either Epic or Dear John you seem to forget that she was the bigger star of the two in Dear John back then with the huge success of Mamma Mia !

  • devvv

Which was my point. She’s always played second fiddle, even in predominantly female casts.

  • beautylover

Letters to Juliette she was the LEAD the movie was very successful !

  • k.

Dear John was made prior to his big break, but I see what you mean

  • Lexy Reyes

She needs a new manager & agent! She should be complaining to them for their bad negotiating skills!

  • k.

You may claim her low pay was due to lack of status (which still doesn’t excuse the hefty gap) or of her negotiating skills, but listen to what she says.”It’s not about how much you get, it’s about how fair it is. You have to decide if you’re willing to walk away from something.” She may have accepted it because she was lacking choice, and if she said no she would be fired. It’s still unfair. It does sound like she found out after the movie was done though.

  • k.

Perhaps. But don’t forget that her manager will get a percentage of Amanda’s salary. It’s not like they would ask for a low pay on purpose.

  • FerCat

And it isn’t a big budget film either.

  • FerCat

Yes, but Channing was clearly in ascendency by this time. Same year was GI. Joe. But Dear John was not a big budget film and would probably be beyond Amanda’s concept of a ‘few years’ ago.

  • FerCat

French braid not cornrows. BIG difference.

  • Mayra

Does anyone really think she’s easygoing? I kinda like her, but that isn’t the first word that comes to my mind when I think of her.

  • FerCat

Easy going with castmates and peers.

  • FerCat

This is why I think it’s Epic. She would be new to the process and the interaction would be limited. And the size of the pay gap would be easier to over look if the starting amount is not really that big.

  • beautylover

Anyway people saying Amanda is having this kind of payment because of her lack of star power make me cringe ! like seriously how ignorant can they be ?

  • FerCat

Other stars just have film franchises backing them. A lot of the bloggersphere denizens are quite ignorant at how popular she is specially on a global platform. What is telling is that she can make this much noise without being part of any YA or superhero franchise. But that’s okay, just means she owe nobody nuthin’.

Many of the big names now can’t say that, is why they can’t bitch out load.

Btw, her version of Mean Ol’Moon is steadily gaining on Nora Jone’s version. She used to be just 1/3rd now she 2/3rds her views.

  • beautylover

I prefer Amanda’s version anyway her voice is more suited for the song !

    always negotiate your contracts people.

  • FerCat

    Not likely.
She would clearly not consider herself in equal status with Timberlake, she’s not a narcissist. Nor were their screen time in any way in parity.

Also IN Time is not a big budget film. It costs as much a mid level romcom.

It doesn’t fit 3 of the 4 key points.

  • AmICynical?

10% is significant pay disparity. I still think actors are generally overpaid for what they do and their contributions to the arts and society. Having said that, if the actor in a male role receives X, I don’t see why the female counterpart to that role should receive so much significantly less. Sure you can always walk as an actor but there is this point of fairness and if this is occurring as frequently as it is…it needs to stop or male roles should receive less to make them comparable to the female roles.

  • FaceOfThe_E

Another actress complaining about gender inequality in Hollywood. I guess associating themselves with political issues makes them feel like we, the people, will take them more seriously. NOT. SHUT UP AMANDA! How is she complaining when there’s women or should I say people who are a whole lot worse off than she’ll ever be? This no-talent gets paid millions to look hot (or stupid, depending on the role or magazine shoot) or slobber on her hot male co-stars. Meanwhile little Anne down the street makes minimum wage for doing REAL labor. These prostitutes for fame, glory, money and more movie roles just need to shut up already. It’s getting annoying at this point.

She needs to be talking about the pay gap between laborers and so-called entertainers. It’s truly mind-blowing. The people who are really important like school teachers, fire men, cops and freakin’ doctors makes nothing compared to her.
