This Sci-Fi thriller follows, Caleb, a gifted programmer in the world’s largest internet company who wins a competition to meet his reclusive CEO of the company, Nathan. Upon arriving at his isolated retreat home, Caleb learns that Nathan has been secretly developing a beautiful cyborg with true artificial intelligence. Tasked with testing the cyborg, Caleb begins to uncover not all is as it seems. The cyborg, played by Alicia Vikander, is perfectly enigmatic in the film which is supported by top-notch special effects. The film is a must-have for the technical and sci-fi geek, in addition, to those looking for a break from all the superhero fanfare.
The Blu-Ray includes special features including philosophical interviews with the filmmakers, in addition to behind-the-scenes commentary. The SXSW Q&A with the cast and crew is also included in addition to short Behind the Scenes vignettes.
Compared to the previous release of this film, the new Rogue Cut adds 17 additional minutes to this superhero franchise film. As a result, the new film has a much more relaxed pace, some new interesting story arcs, while not perturbing the original storyline. While many of the additions are subtle and can often be unnoticed, there are two significantly different scenes added to this version of X-Men. The first scene dives more into the romantic relationship between Beast (Nicholas Hoult) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence). Although the scene is relatively short, it does add an extra layer to the storyline. The other scene features parts of the X-Men freeing Rogue who is being experimented on by humans. This part of the film features an
inventive editing cut that attempts to splice in previous parts of the film to juxtapose the past and the present. Overall, these additions, while most are subtle, were a pleasant surprise and welcomed addition to the film.
The Blu-Ray includes various special features including audio commentary by Bryan Singer, X-Men: Unguarded – a casual conversation between the cast and crew, and a long form featurette called Mutant vs Machine.
