Brad Pitt Urges Costco to Treat Chickens Better in New Letter

Brad Pitt has penned an open letter to Costco CEO Craig Jelinek urging him to use higher standards for their caged chickens.

“As you know, these birds producing eggs for your shelves are crammed five or more into cages that are not large enough for even one hen to spread her wings,” the 51-year-old actor wrote (via CBS).

“In short, cramming hens into cages for their entire lives constitutes cruelty to animals, and animals deserve better. As you know, many major corporations, from Burger King to Unilever, are getting rid of cages — and Whole Foods hasn’t sold eggs from caged hens in years. I admire Costco’s many positive social commitments. You’ve shown great courage and integrity on a range of issues. Won’t you please extend that sensibility — and basic decency — to chickens?,” Brad continued.

Ryan Gosling also recently wrote a letter to Costco to urge them to treat the chickens better.

Did gosling had a thread on his own when he did it first? LOL all Brad ever has to do is give comments and some attention will be shed on it… just like Angelina. That star power though.

  • Felinelilly

I saw a news report about this once not long ago. Unfortunately Costco isn’t the only establishment treating their hens like this. The way these hens are treated is inhumane and disgusting. Thank you Brad for speaking up for even the smallest helpless animals.

  • well

We talked about this on the previous thread, but as always, so proud to be a JP fan- Brad & Angie work very hard to make the world a better place. Putting up the interview busted mentioned (Angie looked so gorgeous, that Brad tripped & they tell the story how Daddy saved Vivi): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3m3Dwb0lnd8

well busted • 34 minutes ago
yes, very true- Daddy saved Vivi! Billy B is not my fav, but, for once*, an interviewer let the JPs talk a little- if more did that, we’d get so much more cool stuff
*probably JUST once for Billy- he’s as a big an interrupter/chatterbox as any of them

Ticky has chickens and she doesn’t speak up for the deplorable conditions. She’s too busy fighting for the rich and not letting a big a$$ house be built in her neighborhood. She’s got her priorities straight. LOL

On a serious note, I saw a report this past week on these conditions. They raise them in the dark, packed in. It’s heart breaking how intentionally cruel the conditions are.

So, good on Brad for shining a light and hopefully, it’ll publicly shame them to change their conditions.

Did you see the documentary Food, Inc? VERY well done- they talk about chickens and many aspects of our food system- it’s not all scary, bc it shows some hope if we make changes. Also disc is how hard it is for poor people to eat healthy. Since watching this, we buy organic beef, chicken, eggs- it’s a bit more expensive, so we find recipes that make these things stretch…it’s free on Amazon (I have prime, though)- my friend says she also found it for free on youtube, but that was months ago- here is good comment on Amazon:

“Food, Inc.” does more than serve as an exposé on the United States food industry–it connects the dots between the nefarious, contemptuous business practices of multinational corporations and their best friends, the compromised government regulatory agencies such as the USDA, FDA, and EPA, who have in the past been led by folks well connected within the very industries they are supposed to regulate.

But let’s hold on a minute. Filmmaker Robert Kenner’s documentary could have been just a dour, paranoid investigative piece and still told the truth. Instead, Mr. Kenner has made a colorful, fast-paced, and well-documented account of the state of the food supply in our country; the unintended consequences of the efficiencies, short-cuts, and technological methods inherent in factory farming; the insidious insider relationship between the meat industry and the agencies that should be regulating it; and the health effects, including diabetes, of consuming processed foods and fast foods. http://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B002UZ5CHO?ie=UTF8&gccRef=1&redirect=true&redirectToAsin=B002UZ5CHO&ref_=Dvm_us_js_sl_GCATTVB002UZ5CHO&tag=gcasvodmov-20&titlDesc=Food%20Inc.

  • Felinelilly

No I haven’t seen it but it sounds very interesting so I might check it out when I have some time. Thank you for letting me know.
There are some industries here in France who also treat their hens in this deplorable way. I’m from the Bresse region, born and raised, where free range chickens and hens are the region’s specialty, so I know hens do not have to live in deplorable conditions anywhere in order to get eggs.

So sorry to read this. Security needs to be improved even and especially at all bases.

I pray the families of these innocent victims may find comfort at this very difficult time.

Have to say sometimes we get a thread at the wrong time.. that last thread had some good stuff on it. 😜

http://www.farmsanctuary.org/learn/factory-farming/chickens/ Hens laying eggs are treated horrible. Many are sent to slaughter at 18 months. Some drop to the ground, left to die in manure. Makes you sick to think about it and sure makes me cut down drastically on these foods. I swear I am going to end up vegan and I was raised on a dairy farm.

  • toastie postie

Sadly, they were probably unarmed. Don’t know if they had side arms or allowed to, after that Fort Hood hate crime. All the others could do, while the slug rapid fired, was to shelter themselves.

  • Felinelilly

JA’s priorities make me want to slap some sense into her. LOL Of course she’s fighting for the rich, as one of them it’s still all about her, herself and she. Although watch, now that Brad is speaking up for chickens, she will too and keep stalking everything Brad and Angelina do and say.

  • toastie postie

Truthfully, I would have rather stayed there – lots and lots of reading I’ve got to do and right now can’t get to here the old way – have to go to my homepage. Bummer. Not that I have anything against chickens – except 7 old gnarly hens

  • toastie postie

    Thank you. Love that interview.

Having trouble staying here – right now have to keep the two threads open, separately – sometimes I have to go back to my homepage to get back here. Not a happy camper, am I, says Yoda. :0(

  • toastie postie

I had heard about it – Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Have now put it on my amazon watch list – thankfully it’s on the free prime viewing. Unhappily, I couldn’t get back here – had to once again go to my home page. Bummer. :0(

  • toastie postie

If anyone can tell me how to get back to this page, when reading all the good stuff on the old. let me know. Pretty please – other than keeping several threads open. :0(

I just go back on.. I got that error message too and didn’t know what was going on. I got the thread by clicking on Brad but not sure if there is still a problem. Crazy that this is happening again.

  • toastie postie

I did that – put Brad Pitt on search, but it didn’t get me back here, not even the old one – just a lot of pictures of Brad – not that it is a bad thing but still….
