Comedian D. L. Hughley Says Caitlyn Jenner 'Looks Like Every P.E. Teacher I Ever Had'

Caitlyn Jenner dons an all black ensemble as she steps out for dinner at Nobu restaurant on Friday (July 17) in Malibu, Calif.

The 65-year-old former Olympian was recently called out by comedian D. L. Hughley after she accepted the Arthur Ashe Courage Award on stage at the 2015 ESPY Awards.

“I think that it’s named after Arthur Ashe,” D.L. said of the award, speaking to a TMZ videographer. “Arthur Ashe from Richmond, Virginia, a symbol of courage. He fought [a] segregated South, a very segregated profession, he fought AIDS with dignity and honor, and Caitlyn Jenner put on a dress. I don’t think it’s the same thing. We have a weirder definition for courage, I think that Lauren Hill was courageous in the name of sports. I don’t know if that would’ve been my choice but obviously I’m not in the ESPYs. I think Arthur Ashe and Caitlyn Jenner have very little in common. Caitlyn Jenner looks like every P.E. teacher I ever had.”

FYI: Caitlyn is wearing an Emerson Ryder necklace.

You just took one line from his whole quote and pretend that it is the point of his statement.
Red arrow me all the way, but I wholeheartedly agree with Hughley. Arthur Ashe is a legendary figure and he fought for completely different ideas.

  • Curt Noydb

    ROTFLMAO!!

  • Piotr Wszeborowski

    Amen to that.

  • Anima

So according to him somebody is brave only if they do something for the part of society they represent.
Social leaders are going to be disappointed that there’s only a handful of causes that are worth fighting for.
As for his silly comment on Caitlyn’s appearance, he should’ve paid attention to her speech: She can take the nasty comments, but this “comedian” guy is telling the world is okay to bully transgender kids just because you don’t agree with how they dress.

  • smooshy

    Shut up.

  • smooshy

I agree with him 100% and am sick of this attention seeking Caitlyn who seems more interested in her wardrobe than anything else.

  • Anima

    Fuck off.

  • http://eternalozzie.com/ eternalozzie

Hugley has always publicly disliked the LGBT community in his comedy …. i learned not to take anything he says too seriously … he is a comedian after all. His dislike doesn’t seem to be against the community but he gets enraged when LGBT struggle is compared to the black civil rights movement.

  • http://eternalozzie.com/ eternalozzie

ok … he didn’t say or suggest anything remotely to the words that you just put in his mouth.

  • ola akande

i have no prob or care about caitlyn/bruce whatever ppl wanna call her. i do think what she has done is courageous but with everything there are degrees. its very hard for me to give anyone an award for courage OVER the girl who was playing college basketball with brain cancer….im sorry, i dunno how anyone can justify her not getting that award

  • Martha Bartha

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

  • Martha Bartha

This is the new normal, remember? Like Gay Marriage.

  • Martha Bartha

    Such language!

  • VanityInsecurity

I am no Jenner sympathizer … but there are different kinds of courage, in all forms, people, & races, etc.. It’s all a matter of your own perspective. Perhaps its not what you, I or Hughley find courageous but nonetheless it is courageous for the LGBT community. Gender criticizing is wrong. Just like racial criticizing is wrong.. This is coming from an African who cares about equality.. hypocrisy in all its glory. un-friggin-real.

  • Anastatia Bagans

These black people always make things about themselves, as if only THEY can be courageous. Who are you to critisize? What have you done? what a joke. It’s only courageous when it appeases your own agenda right? F*ck off you hypocritical ignorant bafoon.

  • PhDiva

“These black people?” Really? YOU are the ignorant AND RACIST buffoon. (Learn to spell. “Bafoon” is not even a word.) You are so racist and stupid that you don’t seem to know that he mentioned Arthur Ashe’s race because ARTHUR ASHE WAS BLACK. And yes, IT WAS COURAGEOUS FOR HIM TO FACE RACISM IN THE SEGREGATED SOUTH AND IN TENNIS. So actually, it WAS about a black person because the award was named after a black man named Arthur Ashe. Do you get it now, or are you just too stupid?

I do not AT ALL agree with Hughley’s attitude about transgender people, but I don’t agree with your racist stupidity either. I don’t think the transgender people want racists like you supporting them. In fact, if Caitlyn were black, you probably wouldn’t support her.

  • PhDiva

I disagree with him, but he never said he supported the bullying of transgender kids. It just didn’t happen.

  • Jon M’Shulla

Except they do not whore themselves on reality TV.

  • Anima

He didn’t said it, he acted on it which is much worse, he’s setting an example.

Saying she looked like a P.E. teacher?, really? Is that all he has to say after her speech?! Then disregarding her experience saying she didn’t deserve the award, who is HE to decide whose experience is worth merit?

He’s putting her down publicly, and I sure hope no kids or teenagers look up to this nobody, because they’re not going to learn anything positive about tolerance and acceptance from what he said.

  • smooshy

    I hate the new normal

  • smooshy

My bad…I didn’t’ read this correctly.

  • Bwest

I agree. They are worshiping a ridiculous man , that by having a lot of money and a family that does not leave the media has highlighted all this !It is easy to be brave with so much money ! Courage is the poor athletes who excel every day to practice their experiences, no grandfather this gentleman, who had all the chances and opportunities in life, to be bored and buy a new gender identity !

  • gilmore

So much transphobia, so little sime

  • Maria

Or Pete Frates, the baseball player who now has ALS, who started the Ice Bucket Challenge that has raised millions of dollars world wide for his cause. His struggle and courage to live life is DAILY. NOT trying to decide what outfit looks good on herself now. This award being given to Jenner made me sick.

  • Maria

You need to grow some backbone. Yes, Jenner DOES look like every PE teacher I’ve ever had as well. That’s just being honest. His transformation took some guts, and I have no issue with what he needed to do to make peace within himself. It’s getting that award that makes me sick when there are so many others MORE deserving in the world of sports. Jenner hasn’t done anything athletic since his Olympics win.

  • Maria

This award is supposed to be for an athlete who portrays courage. Jenner hasn’t done anything athletic in a zillion years. I am disgusted that with all the athletes who struggle DAILY with more important issues, are overlooked by this person, whose fame is from her narcissistic family and whose biggest issue is what to wear everyday. Please.

  • Anima

And you need to grow some brain cells because you are unable to understand the context.
Caityn’s appearance is a secondary issue when discrimination, suicide and bullying are being discussed.

What do you think about the person who received the award last year?
Your reaction to this year’s winner seems disproportionate, saying it “made you sick”. How often does that happen when you see athletes “receiving awards they don’t deserve”?
I’m going to take a guess and say you just had a knee-jerk reaction because you’re a bigot.

  • VanityInsecurity

you really are missing the point completely.

  • Martha Bartha

No, you have to accept it and like it!

  • Maria

Usually athletes receiving awards and medals are deserving. I don’t see any athletic feat here with adversity. THAT is the issue. There are many deserving athletes who were passed over, including thise like Pete Frates who has ALS, and battles adversity every day, and raised millions of dollars world wide with his Ice Bucket Challenge last year. I am no bigot, and have no issue with Jenner. I just do NOT think Jenner should have received this award, and that’s MY opinion. Deal with it.

  • Maria

No, I am not. These awards are for sports, not to address gender issues.

  • kirby76

I see your point, and I do think there is an element of personal courage in Jenner coming to terms with who she is after a lifetime of feeling forced to deny it.

One distinction I see, though, is that Ashe having AIDS had no upside except what he could make of it, in terms of educating the public and putting a human face on the virus. But personally it was all negative, a death sentence. Jenner is, I think, going to have a similar educating effect on transgender issues, but the fact is, on a personal level this journey has been almost 100% to her benefit, the sole downside I see being some ugly online comments such as you see here. She is going to be much richer, and more than that, from a ridiculed has-been sports star turned reality show spectacle, she has become a figure of “substance” and “importance”, commended by the president and civil rights representatives and organizations, etc etc.

It’s almost mind-boggling to think that only months ago it was almost mandatory to make fun of “Bruce Jenner”, and now it’s understood that only unenlightened, reactionary bigots would say anything negative about “Caitlyn”.

  • Anima

ESPN executives thought she deserved the award.
    ESPY gave her the award.
Your “opinion” doesn’t matter. Deal with it.

  • smooshy

    No I don”t

  • Maria

And ESPN is a bunch of stupid faux journalists who thrive on drama and sketchy reporting. No wonder they chose Jenner. It was a slap in the face to true athletes dealing with true adversity. That’s what’s sad.

  • Martha Bartha

Well the media is tellin us we have to.

  • Michael Sky

Thank god. See black people can say things we cant so thank you. That thing is not only hideous but it’s also a MURDERER! Bruce Jenner killed a woman just 2 weeks ago!!! Killer, murderer, you can call uourself whatever you want but you will always be nothing more than murdering trash that sold your soul so you wouldnt go to prison.

  • Michael Sky

It’s about a murder who is being used by the LGBT as a poster prop and everyone in hollywood knows it because Bruce just murdered a woman 2 weeks ago but no one in hollywood can actually say that.

  • Michael Sky

You also forget Bruce Jenner murdered a woman because he was on his phone instead of watching traffic. That for you and me is called negligent homicide…for him its calked heroic and brave….bruce is a killer who should be in prison right now.

  • http://batman-news.com Marie Kahle Tarkington

Hope the family gets a large settlement. Not that it would be justice. Bruce or whatever it is should have to face the family every day and appologize. That way he, it never forgets.

  • VanityInsecurity

Accidents happen all the time.. unfortunately people do die.. this bares no weight or meaning on the fact Hughley is publicly humiliating Jenner. ANd I responded to that.. what you’re saying is ..let’s be honest …reaching.

  • Michael Sky

It’s reaching to say someone that killed someone through negligence because they were illegally driving while on their cell phone is reaching? Let’s be really honest then, the only reason your defending Bruce is because you yourself are homosexual/transgender. Your opinion has no bearing on a reality other than your own. Hughley is a comedian insulting people is what he does for a living. Saying that a person being killed through someone else’s negligence is an “oops” and a “Oh well” is very naive. You show your intelligence (or lack thereof) with every statement you make.

  • splendiferous2

If Ashe were alive with HIV today he would almost certainly live a natural life span. Also, where was Arthur before he got the virus on this issue. Did he get thrown out of his church, along with his children as families were (with hemophilia), by their christian worshipers. straight docs wouldn’t see straights with HIV, and Ashe did not put a face on AIDS. THE face was there long before he got sick. This canonization of Ashe was always just nonsense spread by people who had never been involved in HIV in their lives.Oh what saints they were to give a damn after Ashe got infected. Where the hell were they before then? Taking tea with Jesse Helms. Blocking HIV research? You know it.

Hate spewers are like active volcanos, always ready to explode into hate. Their numbers are dwindling with each passing day. The rest are left to belly-flop on shore.
