Nikki Reed Cleans Up Trash From Santa Monica Beach With Barefoot Wine

Nikki Reed poses beside just a little pile of the trash she helped clean up at the beach on Saturday morning (July 18) in Santa Monica, Calif.

The 27-year-old actress teamed up with Barefoot Wine, the Surfrider Foundation, and over 100 volunteers for the annual Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project.

“Barefoot knows that I use my voice a lot for environmental causes,” Nikki shared at the event. “This just seemed like a really natural partnership between us – my uncle and aunt, who live in Kauai, actually started their own little beach clean-up that my brother and I took part in as children. Just going down to the beach in the morning and putting trash items in your bag and walking home doesn’t take any more time.”

Nikki and all of the volunteers who helped cleaned over 250 pounds of trash from the sand!

Barefoot Wine will be hosting beach clean-ups across the country this summer and you can support the cause by simply picking up trash you see around your own beaches and posting a photo to social media using the hashtag #BeachRescue.

Barefoot Wine will donate an additional $5 to the Surfrider Foundation, up to $50,000, for each post.

God forbid she do something good and there isn’t someone there to take a picture of her doing it.

  • Nikki

Wow, can’t you just pick up trash without turning it into a photo op? Smells like a Paul Ryan homeless shelter situation all over again.

The only reason there are pictures of her is because The Surfrider Foundation wanted a celebrity to promote their good work. It’s not like she went to the beach, decided to pick up trash and then called the paps.

  • k.

These are taken of Surfrider Foundation photographers, not paps.

  • Nikki

And? Exactly. Photographers. It’s a photo op. Paparazzi do not need to be present for it to be considered a photo op. It was a planned event to which photographers were invited for the purpose of promoting a brand. That is the very definition of a photo opportunity.

  • Nikki

Yep. It’s impossible to promote a brand without splashing around a message that says, “Look at me, look how wonderful I am, look at me pick up trash off the beach like a good person!” I would have respected her more if she had been photographed picking up trash by the paps. At least then maybe she would have been doing it without LOOKING for a camera to capture it. That was OP’s point.

  • k.

True. I saw on instagram that she encouraged her followers to join her, but the pictures do look like self-promotion, unfortunately.

  • Jean Morel

Yes, it is a photo opportunity, but for the company just as much if not more than for the celebrity. By inviting, even paying the celebrity to come, photograph her and send said pictures to the media, the company gets to publicize and raise awareness for itself and its activities much more than if they didn’t publicize the event or took pictures of random unknowns, thus bringing in more donations and more volunteers and in the end doing more good for the world.

  • Nikki

Which would work if she was photographed doing almost anything but picking up trash in the photos. For all I know, she was thrown into it before she knew what was happening, but as shamelessly attention-seeking as she’s been in the past, I can’t give her the benefit of the doubt.
