UPDATE: Zimbabwe officials have confirmed that Jericho has NOT been shot and he is alive and well.

More sad news has come out of Zimbabwe – Cecil the Lion‘s brother Jericho has been killed by illegal hunters just days after the beloved animal’s killing.

What makes this story even more sad is that Jericho had been protecting the cubs of his brother Cecil following his death.

“It is with huge disgust and sadness that we have just been informed that Jericho, Cecil‘s brother has been killed at 4pm today,” the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force said in a statement (via the New York Daily News). “We are absolutely heartbroken.”

No other details are known right now.

    I think it’s high time poaching and trophy hunting should be banned. This has been going on for decades now and our beautiful animals are continually being slaughtered. Most of these animals are on the brink of extinction. We are supposed to be stewards of the animals and environment but a lot of people are destroying it.

    Seriously?! I find people who hunt for sport DISGUSTING. I get hunting for survival, people have to eat, but there is NO reason that these hunters need to hunt these magnificent lions. This is outrageous!

    I think it’s terrible that they’re killing these beautiful majestic animals! I won’t go as far as saying hunting in general should be banned. I eat meat, unless I’m vegan or you’re vegan we have no right to say that. The way cows and chickens are killed and tortured for us ALMOST makes me want to never eat meat again.
