Jeremy Irvine Starts a Movement in 'Stonewall' Movie Trailer

Jeremy Irvine and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers witness a raid happening in the first trailer for the upcoming movie Stonewall.

The movie, directed by Roland Emmerich, tells the story of a fictional young man caught up during the 1969 Stonewall riots. Danny Winters (Irvine) is forced to leave behind friends and loved ones when he is kicked out of his parent’s home and flees to New York. Alone in Greenwich Village, homeless and destitute, he befriends a group of street kids who soon introduce him to the local watering hole The Stonewall Inn; however, this shady, mafia-run club is far from a safe-haven.

As Danny and his friends experience discrimination, endure atrocities and are repeatedly harassed by the police, we see a rage begin to build. This emotion runs through Danny and the entire community of young gays, lesbians and drag queens who populate the Stonewall Inn and erupts in a storm of anger. With the toss of a single brick, a riot ensues and a crusade for equality is born.

Also starring in the film are newcomer Jonny Beauchamp, Joey King, and Ron Perlman. It hits theaters on September 25!

Too bad it wasn’t a white cis male who started the movement and it was a BLACK TRANS woman.

PEOPLE OF COLOR BEING ERASED AND WHITEWASHED FROM HISTORY ONCE AGAIN: “”Quick history lesson: The Stonewall riots were a series of violent protests against the police by the LGBT+ community in New York in 1969. Many cite the Stonewall Riots as the single most important event that led to the LGBT+ liberation movement in America, and the foundation upon which all modern LGBT+ rights are founded.

The trailer, claims to be a ‘true story’, and tells the audience that a young, white, cisgender, gay man was the first to throw a brick and start the Stonewall Riots. In reality, hundreds of eye witness accounts and documented evidence have said the riots were started by black drag queens and transgender women.

The two people most credited with sparking the riots and paving the way for modern LGBT+ rights were Marsha P.Johnson, a black transwoman who performed as a drag queen, and Silvia Rivera, puerto rican transgender woman. These two people, who are universally recognized as starting the riots, take a back seat in to the “pretty white boy” who comes to save the day.

Marsha was the one who ‘really started it’ on the night of the riots, according to witnesses in David Carter’s Stonewall biography.”

Yes, we know all that. I am still looking forward to this film. The trailer claims it to be Based on a true story.

  • ds9sisko

No, “we” don’t all know that. There are untold numbers of gay & lesbian people — much less the public at large — who have no idea that the Stonewall riots were started by Black & Puerto Rican folk. To continue to perpetuate the LIE that it was led by white gay men, that Blacks, Puerto Ricans and other people of color were largely absent from the riots (and the movement) is just another example of white gay patriarchy on the march, rewriting history to suit its own navel gazing agenda. “Based on a true story” would be acceptable if “based” wasn’t the equivalent of an outright narrative and historical falsehood.

Yes WE do know all that. Your anger is off putting, and I am not interested in your rants.

  • ds9sisko

Its shame you confuse being informed about facts with “anger,” but I’m not responsible for your delicate feelings being upset about the truth.

This movie is trash and anyone involved on trying to erase transwoman of color, the lesbians and other poc’s who really started stonewall are disgusting.
