007 Author Thinks Idris Elba Is 'Too Street' to Play James Bond

Idris Elba is apparently “too street” to play James Bond, this according to the author of the next 007 novel Anthony Horowitz.

The 42-year-old British actor’s name has been thrown out there as a possible James Bond replacement for Daniel Craig when he passes the baton.

“For me, Idris Elba is a bit too rough to play the part. It’s not a colour issue. I think he is probably a bit too ‘street’ for Bond. Is it a question of being suave? Yeah,” Anthony told the Daily Mail. “Idris Elba is a terrific actor, but I can think of other black actors who would do it better.”

I adore Idris. He is in my top-10 most talented (*cough*: HOT) actors list. But, I think, the conception of Bond is to be able to blend, be invisible, be one of the crowd, not to stand out etc. Idris entering a poker room, for example, would have all eyes on him.
My pick would be: Michael Fassbender. Altho, Michael Fassbender entering a room would have all women on him.

The point of being an actor is being able to play whatever role your given. Idris is “too street” to play James Bond, but was nominated for a Golden Globe for his portrayal as Nelson Mandela? Okay…

  • Sassypants

I think Idris could play both suave and street, the author calls him a terrific actor but a terrific actor can play many types of roles. I think the author is either judging based on appearance or one role he may have seen him in (Luther?).

  • VanityInsecurity

too street? Srsly? He should be the next Bond if Tom Hardy is too busy to do it.

  • Alphonse

“Too street”….he’s a bloody actor he can be whatever he wishes to project.

  • Loretta Attwood Lee

You’re absolutely right! One could say the same about Craig – he certainly seems “rough around the edges” compared to previous Bonds. I, for one, would love to see Elba take on Bond, he is a terrific actor and I’m sure he would do the character justice!

“Idris Elba is a terrific actor, but I can think of other black actors who would do it better.”

Name ONE black actor who could do it better than Elba?

  • Amazing Amy

I said the same thing. Idris is not much different from Craig, who’s rough and tumble. I think Bond needs to be edgy, and both Craig and Elba have the edgy swagger.

  • Amazing Amy

Hardy also has the “street” vibe.

  • Arrow 12

He is an actor and he would make an absolutely great Bond. It’s his job to play different characters.

  • Jillette

What a load of prejudiced crap. He’s ideal for Bond. Bond was British, period.

  • Jillette

    Bond was ‘street’ and that’s that. it’s a cop-out.

  • Gus Taylor

    Is not a color issue….yeah right…..

  • Gus Taylor

    absolutely correct….

  • Richard Strong

If you bother to read the original article then you’d know who he named.

  • VanityInsecurity

Tom Hardy street? Thanks for the laugh I needed that …

  • mrgunz

He’s to street and rough around the edges, huh, what. He’s to black, that’s what it is. Don’t try to cover it up, by saying I know plenty other black actors, that could play a better Bond.

  • Darkthunder

Well, there was no name mentioned in the article I commented on.

  • Neighbour

I might actually start watching Bond films again if they cast Idris. Boring franchise and needs someone with CHARISMA like Idris, who happens to also be an excellent actor. If you want suave, powerful, and magnetic, try Pacific Rim. He held up that movie. Suck it, Anthony Horowitz.

Ok. When you read the full article, he does name one Black actor, Adrian Lester. However, there is no way that Adrian Lester fits the Bond mold unless you like your Bond more like Timothy Daulton than Craig Daniels.

  • PlayNice

Completely disagree. Idris Elba would be an improvement over Craig. Sorry, not sorry.

  • Richard Strong
  • Bynx

Im sure there are many minorities who would make a good Bond. Jackie Chan, Sajar Ghandi, Chief Wanichuk of the Dakota Sioux, Juan Padaro. So why does he have to be Black? Thats almost as bad an idea as when they offered the job to Roger Moore.

  • Darkthunder

And? That link does nothing to negate my original comment.

  • Amazing Amy

Tom Hardy is definitely not suave and very rough around the edges. He looks downright thuggish at times….like someone who, if he wasn’t an actor, would be in and out of jail.

  • VanityInsecurity

damn girl you stay hating. :) it’s ok he’s making mills while you’re online being a hater.

  • chuck

Idris Elba is one of my favorite actors, but I don’t think he’s right to play a Scott.
