Matt Damon Under Fire for Comments About Diversity in Hollywood

Some comments Matt Damon made during the Sunday evening (September 13) premiere of his and Ben Affleck‘s show Project Greenlight on HBO have people very upset.

The 44-year-old actor was speaking with a group of filmmakers that included Effie Brown, the one black woman in the bunch.

Effie, who has produced dozens of films, explained that there is one black character in the film who gets hit by a white pimp, and spoke about her passion for representing marginalized groups in movies.

“You’re looking at this group right here and who you’re picking and the story that you’re doing,” Effie began, to which Matt interrupted, saying, that’s “not necessarily true.”

“When we’re talking about diversity you do it in the casting of the film not in the casting of the show,” Matt continued. Watch the moment below…

Now even Hollywood Liberals are being beat up by their own ideologies. How many television stations are devoted to a strictly white audience like BET?

i thought film and tv tell stories (real or fictional) of all kinds… and when done well, can be compelling and covey profound and important messages. why does this topic have to be so confrontational. when will people finally agree to disagree… as we all have our own opinions. besides, project greenlight is about helping folks give their dreams life with guidance and direction from those who are highly successful within the industry. i would think debate would be a healthy part of the creative process if passive aggressive behavior is avoided. issues aside… i look forward to seeing the new installments of project greenlight. it was great many years ago when it debuted, so it will likely continue to be entertaining and an enlightening look into the production side of the film/tv industry.

Are you fucking kidding me. FOX ABC CBS NBC have been the most diverse in recent years in comparison to how whitewashed they were for the entire 20th century.

white privilege people will never understand. No matter how many times its explained simplified in a privilege world they will never get it..if he thinks like this while he is in front of a camera imagine his comments in a room full of his liberal elitist A list associates.

Viacom owns BET. While it may be geared toward a black audience, it’s still a white company.

I don’t see anything wrong with what Matt said…. why he’s under fire??

  • Kaitlyn

For the sake of human beings of all race and gender, please Matt Damon, do not apologize for speaking your truth.

Too many people are using social issues (and the click hungry media) to push their personal agenda by vilifying people for acting like people. What Damon said isn’t wrong and if anyone thinks the world is a better place with less opinions then they have no idea what they are asking for.

  • Kaitlyn

Because he’s a white male and white male bashing is the easiest way to make a headline.

  • Kaitlyn

You don’t represent me or any other minorities with your twisted “you don’t understand my pain” Schlick. You only represent yourself so get off the podium.

Oh please. You gotta do better than this if you want to compare the black struggle to the non-existent white struggle. White people tell black people all the time that if they don’t like the lack of diversity then they must go out and create opportunities for themselves. And when black people actually do just that (i.e BET) white people turn around and complain about it. Make up your damn minds. BTW, most major TV networks are white whether they outwardly say so or not.

  • Gina

No honey, because he as a white male had the nerve to try and educate a black filmmaker on the meaning of diversity as if she doesn’t have to deal with the struggles of the lack of diversity in Hollywood. He is trying to tell her the rules of diversity from the perspective of a white man who never had to deal with being racially excluded in society. He is the poster child for white privilege.
