Surprise Oscar Entry: Paramount Sets Christian Bale, Brad Pitt, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling Drama ‘The Big Short’ For AFI Finale, December 11 Release
BREAKING: Paramount Pictures has sprung a surprise new entry into the awards season mix, setting the Adam McKay-directed adaptation of the Michael Lewis book The Big Short to be AFI’s closing night gala film on November 12 before it opens limited on December 11 and goes wide December 23. That adds another film to what is shaping up to be the most competitive year end movie market in recent memory.

The studio today releases its first trailer for a Paramount/ New Regency film that stars Christian Bale, Brad Pitt, Melissa Leo, Marisa Tomei, Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling. The drama is about four stock-savvy outsiders who decided after the global economic collapse to do something about a loophole in high-frequency trading that gave unfair advantage to big banks over smaller investors. They hatched The Big Short, a scheme designed to expose the loophole and level the playing field by beating those banks at their own game. McKay wrote the script with Charles Randolph, based on Lewis book about a group who took on Wall Street whose full title is The Big Short: Inside The Doomsday Machine.

This all happened in the last two weeks after McKay–the former Saturday Night Live writer best known for directing hit Will Ferrell comedies including Talladega Nights, Step Brothers, Anchorman and The Other Guys–first showed the studio a nearly completed cut of the film and said he could finish quickly when he got a strong response. Paramount brass then showed it to AFI and got that plum closing night berth. The studio and producers Plan B and New Regency–which teamed on 12 Years A Slave –won an auction for the latest film-friendly fact-based book by Lewis, who also authored the books that became the hit movies Moneyball and The Blind Side. They have operated largely under the radar and it didn’t seem they would be ready in time to compete in what has suddenly become a heated Oscar corridor field, after many awards-bait films premiered at the Telluride, Venice and Toronto festivals.

The Big Short will open limited December 11 against the wide opening of the Ron Howard-directed whale ship survival tale In The Heart Of The Sea. That day sees the wide opening of the Brian Helgeland-directed Legends, with Tom Hardy playing ruthless British gangsters Reggie and Ronnie Kray, after it opens limited November 20 and expands November 25. The following December 18 weekend sees Star Wars: The Force Awakens open wide and dominate regular and IMAX screens. Paramount then boldly opens The Big Short wide against that juggernaut five days later, and two days before a crowded December 25 Friday release calendar that sees the wide openings of the David O Russell-directed Joy with Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, and the Peter Landesman-directed football film Concussion with Will Smith. It also sees the limited openings of the Quentin Tarantino-directed The Hateful Eight with Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell and Bruce Dern, and the Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu-directed The Revenant with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy. The Point Break remake and Alvin and Chipmunks: The Family Chipalso open that weekend. along with the McKay-produced Paramount comedy Daddy’s Home with Ferrell.

Paramount has separately slotted for December 30 limited release the Charlie Kaufman/Duke Johnson-directed stop motion animation film Anomalisa, which the studio acquired about a week ago at the Toronto Film Festival. Suddenly, a studio that seemed to have little to do this coming awards season finds itself in the middle of a very competitive awards race with two major films.

I always had a feeling this would come out this year, and it certainly makes sense logistically to have it at AFI. Thats going to be an awesome red carpet, all those stars.

  • wika

Just saw the interview by Melanie Laurent….. And wow, lol, the movie is more french-like than I thought. It’d be interesting to see what she’s talking about, though, shots by Angelina from a female perspective…

Also, saw a discussion on Brad and Angelina’s family planning. And yeah, we do get to see that in the Sony hacks too, didn’t we? It was 2014 when Angelina mentioned to them that Brad was gonna shoot in late 2016. Pretty cool how they are with the scheduling, considering that they have 8 members in the family to plan for in advanced LOL!

  • wika

Also- I think it’s nice that Brad’s doing more of the working in Hollywood for big bucks. I see it as one of the ways he’s supporting Angelina and her humanitarian efforts. People in the humanitarian field wouldn’t earn much – not Hollywood standard, anyway.

  • wika

Yeah TBS is definitely star studded..

This is for my fellow Roger fans. I’m an unabashed Fed Fan…but there’s a guy in Spain who might be the ultimate Fed Fan. This guy was in a coma for 11 years and woke up suddenly in late August. His family was catching him up on important stuff he’d missed during his 11 year coma…but what he really wanted to know was, “How’s Roger doing?” LOL! He was stunned to find out that Roger had won 13 Slams while he was in his coma and was still #2 in the world. Roger’s a stand-up guy – would not be at alls urprised if he goes to visit the guy or arranges for him to come to a tournament and meet him. It wouldn’t be the first time he’s done it.

    http://www.tennisworldusa.org/Roger-Federers-fan-wakes-up-from-coma-after-11-years-and-Finds-Roger-in-a-Slam-final-I-thought-it-was-a-joke%26acut-articolo26398.html

Roger Federer´s fan wakes up from coma after 11 years and Finds Roger in a Slam final: ´I thought it was a joke.”

Tennis – Jesus Aparicio thought the Swiss had retired! ..
    Roger Federer 21 Sep 2015 – 12:34 / by Lorenzo Ciotti / reads 21945.

Sunday, December 12th 2004, Jesus Aparicio was in the car with his friends to celebrate his 18th birthday. But the car went out of the roadway. While his friends remained almost unscathed, Aparicio however went into a deep coma. The young boy of Seville was interrupted in his life and in his love for tennis. Especially in his love for his idol Roger Federer, who at that time was 23 years old and had won his fourth grand slam at Flushing Meadows. Jesus’s friends said that he wanted to meet meet the Swiss one day and that he was putting money aside to go to the 2005 Wimbledon.

There was however an unexpected but happy ending for Aparicio. On 27th August 2015, Jesus suddenly woke up and called his mother, with memories of his accident intact. He also received news about the current affairs in Spain and across the world, but he also didn’t hesitate to ask about Federer: “It came like a flash to my mind and I asked about Roger. I thought he had retired. When I knew that at 34-years, he is still playing and is number two in the world, I thought they were kidding me. When I heard that he reached 17 slam titles, I put my hands on my face.”

Jesus also had the pleasure to watch the US Open final between Novak Djokovic, total stranger to him, and Roger Federer at his home. “I was really surprised to see him play well, Djokovic is good.” The Seville native was happy despite Federer’s defeat, especially because his dream to see the Swiss play live was still achievable: “I want to see his match before he retires, perhaps his 18th Slam.

I was just thinking with Angie changing her name to Jolie Pitt. It just felt like she was starting a new chapter in her life/career. From now on the bulk of her Directing Jobs will be as Jolie Pitt. She is establishing herself by that moniker and that will be how she will be referred to as a Director.

Very interesting when you think about it.

I laugh because every story say how “top secret” it was.. but we knew about it the day it happened. Got pics of the cake, guest coming, the fake minister, and everyone has been dropping tidbits. but it is oh so secret.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. Waking up after 11 years in a coma is incredible. I was going to Google to see if there were other stories that talked about the coma. I would assume that the family is Catholic and that’s why they never pulled the plug on the life support machines.

I think she had created a MONSTER. He is getting more attention than he ever has. He likes going to events and getting photographed with other actors. He loves being interviewed and loves the spotlight. She wants to be seen when she wants.. Squiggy wants to be seen all the time. He is loving all the focus.. and when a poser gets that you can’t pull it back. He doesn’t need her to be with him to get photographed.

Watch.. Squiggy is going to be a BIG ASS PROBLEM FOR HER DOWN THE ROAD. And Sandra better watch it too.. she has another one in her life too. I was thinking about Sandy and her new guy. They said she met him when he photographed Louie. I think Sandra heard of him or saw him and wanted to meet him. Got him to take pics of her kid and then they started dating. I just don’t see her needing to go and get some unknown photographer when she has so many contacts. Sandra ain’t no angel and I think she wanted this guy and got him.
