'The Martian' Tops Weekend Box Office With $55 Million Debut!

Matt Damon‘s new flick The Martian opened huge with $55 million, making it this weekend’s top film!

According to THR, the 3D space movie, also starring Kate Mara, Jessica Chastain, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, almost beat Gravity in nabbing the top October opening of all time.

Coming in at No. 2 was the animated flick Hotel Transylvania 2, which held strong with an additional $33 million.

Taking the third spot was Emily Blunt and Josh Brolin‘s action movie Sicario, which expanded nationwide with a $12 million gross.

Rounding out the top five were The Intern and Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, which earned $11.6 million and $7.6 million, respectively.

Meanwhile, Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s latest film The Walk played in 365 Imax theaters and brought in $1.6 million.
