Jaime King Speaks Out On Fighting Backlash When Standing Up For What She Believes In

Jaime King spoke her mind to Elle magazine in her second column for their website on Friday (October 9), following up her empowering article about feminism and friendship.

The 36-year-old Hart of Dixie star and mother of two based the column around her Twitter conversation with Jurasic Park director Colin Trevorrow after being disconcerted by his comments on female directors earlier this year.

She wrote down her thoughts about the fear of backlash after speaking out and how she continually fights to be an activist.

On her thoughts after tweeting Colin: “As soon as I published the tweet�”before I saw any coverage�”I had a total freak out: Holy s***, the studios, directors, producers, etc. are going to see this! Oh my god, they are going to think, ‘Jaime King is trouble, she’s antagonistic, she’s one of those crazy feminists.’”

On asking friend Lena Dunham for advice: “I texted Lena Dunham, one of the bravest people I know, for her advice…She was my cheerleader and advised me to absolutely not delete [the Tweet]; that what I said was correct and to keep sticking up for what I believe in because what we have to say is very important as women, especially during this time.”

On people speaking their mind in today’s society: “Everyone is afraid to say what they believe or how they feel because they are riddled with unease that if they don’t say it in the precise words in which EVERYONE finds socially acceptable (which is nearly impossible) or exclude others by focusing on a singular group or topic, they will get their asses handed to them.”

On speaking her truth: “I no longer want to see people’s heads served on a platter for attempting to make dynamic changes from a heart-centered place. The one solid thing that keeps fueling the courage within myself is that I am consistently asking myself, “Would I want to live in a world without love?” If I don’t do something, even if it’s on such a micro level, if I don’t purely express my truth when I have a chance to do so, then I’m not going to live in a world of loving or progress. And that idea makes my heart break far more than the agony of being publicly persecuted every day for the rest of my life.​”
