Emily Blunt Says Just Talking About Sexism Is Making It Worse

Emily Blunt and Diane Kruger walk the red carpet at God’s Love We Deliver’s 2015 Golden Heart Awards on Thursday night (October 15) in New York City.

The ladies were joined at the event by designer Michael Kors, Vogue‘s Anna Wintour, actresses Patricia Clarkson and Lynda Carter, and models Devon Windsor, Toni Garrn, Jessica Hart, and Shanina Shaik.

In a new interview, Emily was asked about sexism in the industry.

“Sure I’ve experienced sexism,” Emily said (via BBC). “But not that often any more. I sometimes feel that we can exacerbate the problem by talking about it more. I think you can keep talking about it and create more and more of a stamp of divide. I think we need to do more – and stop talking about it.”

FYI: Emily is wearing a Michael Kors Collection dress and shoes, a Brian Atwood clutch, and Neil Lane jewelry. Diane is wearing a Michael Kors Collection dress and clutch. Anna is wearing a Michael Kors Collection dress. Shanina is wearing a Michael Kors Collection dress, shoes, and clutch. Toni is wearing a Michael Kors Collection dress, shoes, and clutch. Devon is wearing a Michael Kors Collection dress and clutch. Jessica is wearing a Michael Kors Collection dress and shoes.

  • Courtney Puzzo

she’s got it backwards and is a c list star anyway

  • GroundControl500

She’s a foolish young woman. You don’t resolve problems by playing ostrich. It’s because in days of yore women were raised to be “polite”, be conciliatory, not make waves, that they are treated as less than men.

Making important change has never been easy or comfortable for those doing the heavy lifting.

  • Casey C

Oh Emily. I’ve defended you in the past, and you’re a good actress, but NO. No no no no. Talking about it, making it an open issue, IS doing somehting about it. It’s opening dialogue, it’s getting people together to insist on change, unifiying people to push for change and making things better. staying silent does nothing

  • arwa

Seriously؟ According to what book she learned: ignoring problems will solve them? If you’re not going to say something good, please just don’t speak.

  • arwa

Maybe She’s fool, but she’s not young. And she should know better.

  • gradybridges

You people have it all wrong. She isn’t saying do nothing about it and stop talking, she’s saying talk only gets you so far. It’s time for action. Like refusing to be in a movie if you aren’t getting paid the same as a costar.

  • Jordy

I find it humorous that those saying she is stupid can’t even comprehend what she said. It’s not hard to understand what she meant.

She isn’t saying to not do anything. She is saying to do something PSYCHICALLY. Doing an interview and complaining doesn’t help. Exiting a project because you’re not getting paid equal is what you need to do. She’s saying talk only gets you so far. Actions speak louder than words.

  • Ditzzzy

True and people should just say that it shouldn’t even be an issue. It should be part of the past and people should make things happen now!!!

  • arwa

She said talking about sexism is “stamp of divide”. How on earth we misunderstood her? And what kind of action we should do? Talking is an action too. If I’m a writer or journalist talking is the action I can and should do. If a whole system is discriminating against me based on my gender, I have to speak up, otherwise, no one cares. Not everyone have the privilege to “refuse” a job offer.
And If a man don’t like it when I talk about sexism, I honestly, don’t care if my ideas going to “divide” us.

  • Kaitlyn

Yes. It’s creating a divide. There are many many people who want to do nothing but talks and judge and put words in people’s mouths (as seen in these comments and comments on every thread regarding equality).

Open dialog does not always lead to change. Most of the time open dialog leads to separation.

I understand that, but unless you talk about it as well, you’ll get nowhere. talking about it brings it into the light, can bring people together and can facilitate the actually physical doing of something. they’re both important and both necessary. its not a case of stop talking start doing. its keep talking and get doing.

  • Jordy

I think everyone has heard it all very loud and clear. Every day there’s another actress spouting off about not getting paid equal. Gwyneth Paltrow is on that train now, even though RDJ had a way bigger and more demanding role in the Iron Man films. There’s no use in talking about it if you’re still going to take the non-equal paying job, and then complain after. Execs aren’t going to care if you don’t like the pay if you’re still in their film and they make the money they want.

  • Casey C

she wasn’t talking about money. yes, equal pay is a part of sexism, but that’s not what she’s expressly talking about, you’re the one going on about equal pay. sexism is a hell of a lot more than that. within the acting world its directors having women screw them for roles, its no female roles in movies. its movies being told they’ll get more money if they make a female character male. its a woman’s role being reduced to how she looks in underwear. you keep going on about money and thats just a tiny part of it. and what exactly is Emily doing? shes talking about it. what is she actually doing? she talked about, not a couple weeks ago about Sicario being offered more money if her character was male. she was talking about the very thing shes saying a couple weeks later that she barely experiences and we need to talk less about. pick one. She also says she experiences it less now. how strange that its happening less as people talk about it more, as they shine a light on it more and feel bold in trying to change

  • Jordy

If you want to write a book on sexism in Hollywood, a chat forum is not the place. I am fully aware of the sexism in film. Taking your clothes off because you’re a woman is not at the forefront of the cause anymore. And if you think it’s only male directors screwing their actors, you’re mistaken. It’s about money right now. That’s the sexist issue. Patricia Arquette, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, the list goes on, are the ones talking about pay. Pay is talked about way more than bodies anymore because the women, and men alike, are doing an okay job of parading their nearly bare bodies in photoshoots. The money is what irks most actresses if anything right now. Agism might be second. And once again. She’s simply stating you need to do something rather than moan about it to some seedy magazine. I couldn’t care less if she just mentioned her pay issues from over a year ago, so long as she’s doing something about it from that point on.

  • arwa

How come you know she was talking about equal pay specifically? She said “sexism” and as far as I know gender gap is a part of sexism, not the other way around. Also, sexism is not just about taking your cloths off. It’s about respect, having the same opportunities as men, end women poverty, end women trafficking, and sexually objectifying women. Sexism is about stopping calling women superficial for loving makeup and cloths ….

When will people learn that not talking about something won’t make it go away? Ugh

I’m aware. Thank you for your much needed assistance. That person brought up directors making actresses sleep with them as the other part of sexism, as if it were just that and pay. If you want to teach someone about all the facets of sexism in Hollywood, perhaps the poster you’re defending should be one of them.

  • arwa

I’m not sure what poster you are talking about, but ok.
