Is Universal’s luck changing? Jobs didn’t do well either. Happy for Goosebumps and Martian! Spies had a poor opening…or was that expected?

Not really. I doubt those 2 films were expected to rake it in. Jobs is a prestige title meant for Oscar bait and C Peak is kind of an experimental project. Neither are big budget spectacles.

Peak is only distributed by Universal.

Actually, Universal expected a 60K average or over 2M. 1,5Mis quite a disappointment. Jobs, with all the Oscar buzz, stellar cast and crew and hard campaign, could have done much more. This result proves the general audience isn’t that interested like those from 4 theaters last weekend. Sicario had a higher PTA when it expanded to 59 theaters and it’s no Steve Jobs. Boyle just had a lucky PTA like Inside Llewyn Davis had a few years ago. Many tracking expect Jobs to gross over 90M domestic , that’s a spectacle for me. It seems it won’t go that far. The film has a 33M budget and nearly 30M on promotion at least, that’s a lot of money, it needs to gross over 120M to break even.

Crimson Peak cost 55M, besides all the money spent on marketing. Universal is only distibuting but it wants its investment back too. Apparently, they won’t have it. The film will luckily gross its budget at the end of its run.

Hard to believe they expected these 2 to actually make that much. That’s just wishful thinking. From the onset it seemed pretty obvious they would have little mass audience appeal. Stellar but no proven big name draws in either.

Large audiences for these type of films don’t exist anymore. And the first ‘Jobs’ film already tapped that well.

Uni doesn’t expect to gross 300M with them but it wants to profit. Jobs cost at least 60M considering budget and marketing so it needs to make over 120M. This poor average or25K, below expectations, was not amazing. Just OK. Sicario did better and it wasn’t am Oscar bait film with stellar cas and crew. Sorkin wants to gave another SN with this.

About CP, a 55M budget is quite high. Uni spent a few millions promoting it so it wants investment back. The film did only 12M and 13M overseas. Not good.

Unrelated, but the female lead of Sicario is a bigger draw than all the other female leads in Jobs and Peak combined.

I’m not talking about characters. Jobs is a huge Oscar-bait film, with Boyle directing, Sorkin’s script and a stellar cast. Universal expects to gross at least 120M with this, they spent 33M producing besides all the marketing, which has been quite expensive. Nobody expects Sicario to be a hit, only a respectable box office. Jobs was supposed to have a much higher PTA than just 25K, this is quite underwhelming, actually. But it proves that four theaters in NY and LA was just a nice move by the studio to pretend that people are dying to watch it. This film will be well below 20M next weekend, you’ll see. I am sure Sorkin wanted to have another Social Network with this but he apparently failed. On the other hand, I was disappointed with CP because first results pointed it out to have a great weekend. It’s a shame. I’m still watching it though.
