The Affair's Ruth Wilson Is Not Sure Why There's a Stigma to Infidelity

Ruth Wilson poses at the top of the Empire State Building to turn on the lights in honor of Only Make Believe on Tuesday (October 27) in New York City.

The 33-year-old The Affair actress recently talked with THR about her views on marriage and monogamy.

“We’re upholding these institutions and I’m not sure work anymore. I don’t know. I mean, that’s a question — it’s a big debate. The Ashley Madison website that got hacked — 37 million people were signed on to an infidelity site — kind of suggests that infidelity happens an awful lot,” Ruth said. “We treat it with such stigma, but actually so many people do it. I’m not sure why the stigma exists in a way.”

She not sure why there’s a stigma to infidelity?

  • Mike1288

Clearly she is an idiot or not very compassionate to her significant other in her life. I guess asking someone to have morals and respect for another persons feelings is probably something she does not understand either. There are a billion people in the world and your perspective on what a fraction of the world did? and oh by the way many of the accounts were fake.

  • Casey C

Maybe because you’ve taken a vow to be with only that person for the rest of your life? (unless of course you have an agreement with your spouse that your marriage is open or what have you). maybe because there is no reason to cheat. You can leave a relationship with dignity before starting another. i find infidelity unforgivable and while i was a fan of Ruth Wilson’s acting, I’m no longer a fan of hers. either she’s happy to cheat herself OR if she were cheated on she’d change her tune.

  • Broadzilla

Oh please….If you’re going to cheat, don’t get married.

  • jason

actresses are a bunch of idiots and then they complain why they don’t get any respect in the business

  • http://rememberingthedesireisprivate.blogspot.com/ GFW™

Her excuse is hits to a website and that “a lot” of people do it? Maybe she’s never been in love in an exclusive committed relationship? Could be? Think if she were on the end of being cheated on while deeply in love with her partner she might have tad different view, ya think?

  • Revengefan0101

What kind of Hollyweird nonsense is this?

  • Revengefan0101

Don’t be in a relationship at all. Stay single and sleep with as many people as you want. (and use protection)

  • Lisa

Ok, I love that show The Affar but to say she’s not sure why Infidelity is bad is making herself sound foolish. Lives get ruined due to infidelity. It’s better to divorce one if you have fallen in love with somebody else than to run behind your spouse back to cheat because that’s 100 times worse. Maybe she needs a taste of it to know how hurtful it is. Keep infidelity in TV and movie scripts. It’s better as a fiction story but something that should never be tried in real life.

This proves that these “celebrities” live a completely different reality than most people. These actors/singer/etc live their lives having no accountability simply because they have everything at their disposal. Cheating is no stigma, cheating is simply selfish.

It’s called HAVING MORALS. She seems lost.

  • 55vineyard

She needs to find her one true love and soul mate. Some people never do.
I was lucky enough to have mine for almost 33 years of marriage before the Lord called him home.

So is it how they are going in or does it turn them once there?

  • http://rememberingthedesireisprivate.blogspot.com/ 🎃 GFW 🎃

Open relationships are a recipe for disaster. Neither gets the whole you.

  • Casey C

I don’t disagree, and they’re definitely not for me, but clearly for some it seems to work and I didn’t want to end up with a bunch of people commenting that people could have an open relationship, and/or being complete dicks to me,

They really don’t work in the long run. No one gets the all of the other like in a ‘real’ one-on-one. They use the other person for separate things they fail or lack the courage to with their primary, if that’s the right word, partner. Kind of like men using whores for ‘specialty’ enjoyment. At the end of them, and there is always an end, they fail to emotionally commit. It’s an excuse to have another, or several other, partners. Typically, it isn’t unnatural for someone to want more than one partner. It is, or can be, understood. Yet, again, neither get all of what they want/need from either. That can only be obtained by ‘completing’ the other by what’s missing. Hard to explain.

It’s important to understand the complex reasons why affairs happen: http://www.dearpeggy.com/affairs.html. A person chooses to commit infidelity in response to, or escape from, his/her own inner problems, issues, communication problems, lack of esteem, or emotional chaos.

Anyone who has been betrayed knows the severe emotional pain and trauma that infidelity causes. Not to be taken lightly.
